Well, ok I have suffered now for 20+ years (on and off), but this year has got worse and the last six months has been a nightmare and I have sought pain management from the docs....And have now been placed on diclofenac but it's taking it's time to kick in, anyone else had this problem and if so did you try anything else? I know my sex life is not the most important, but it is putting me off looking to be active active |

Have you seen a Chiropractor or Osteopath? Do you have flat feet? My back pain was diagnosed as being caused by flat feet years ago. Took them twenty years to notice |

Kate's suffering from sciatica. She's on some strong pain killers.
She's just texted me to say she's tucked up in bed waiting for the pills to knock her out |

I insisted on a xray 3 years ago and just showed wear and tear, maybe my problem is I have a high pain threshold, so they just said at the time they would manage any pain management required, I've just got to my threshold in the last 4 months and knackered as lack of sleep and now the pain is bloody tiring....so just looking for alternatives that is all x |

"See an osteopath if you can, back pain can often be caused by an imbalance elsewhere"
When I did my back in a few years ago, for a few months I was unable to walk for more than 50-100 metres at a time and even that was excruciating. My osteopath fixed me and gave me some stretches and I still have the odd problem but nothing comparable to that.
And never, ever see a chiropractor |

I echo the call for an MRI...disc problems won't show on an X-ray (eg herniated disk bulging onto sciatic nerve which is what I have)...also, in 3 years wear and tear can have severely increased...my hip joint went from a bit of wear and tear to utterly fucked in 18 months...best of luck |

You have my sympathy I have had back problems since falling of a ladder in 1986. I have found since that time that people respond to different treatments. What works for one is excruciatingly painful for another.
Be proactive in trying different things and keep those that work for you and ditch the rest. For me the Chiropractor worked and I still do the stretching exercises he gave me on a daily basis.
Good luck and I hope the pain eases soon. |

I also have suffered with Cronic lower back pain for over 20 years. I also knackerd the nerves up in my neck and as a result lost the muscle in my back. I spend up to two weeks at a time flat out unable to move.
I've had Xrays MRI nerve conduction studies
And yep my back Is bolloxed.
I can only give you a list of what I've tried that may help.
It's not really done much for me apart from pain killers to help with the pain.
Cocodamol
Tramadol
Tynnamol
Neproxin
Diclofenac
Voltarol Prescription strength
Amitriptyline
Seteroid injections
Hydrocortisone injections
Chiropractor
Osteopath
Psychopath lol.
Back pain is a comon complaint so docs will fudge you off with the lesser evil of drugs, you have to be persistent.

I would press for a referral to physio and an exact diagnosis. Traction was the only thing that worked for my lumbar problem - so the physio eventually suggested an inversion table, and with one I can easily manage my back without painkillers most of the time now.
This is a long infomercial for one particular brand but contains most of the salient points. I got mine off Ebay for £21, and that was a £400 Kessler machine. They are a total godsend. Good luck.

I'm sorry sometimes, if you strengthen the tummy muscles it balances your torso out and can help with back pain, check with a doc first but, if all else fails |

"Aparently poor hamstring flexibility can cause it too. "
Tightness in the hamstring can cause back pain. There are stretches that can help with it.
Sometimes lower back pain can be caused by weak glute muscles. As they provide a lot of support for the lower back.
Best thing to do is see a physio or chiropractor. |

I have sciatica following a car crash and my partner has had it for years also.
I found that most painkillers don't work apart from tramadol which just knocks me out.
There's little things I've found to ease it though, I got a V pillow recently because I'm pregnant and heard it's more comfortable to sleep with but it really makes sitting in a chair so much more bareable! I push it down so it's hugging the bottom of my back and that relieves a lot of pressure. Hot water bottles also are the only way I can sleep at times, they help no end.
Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer! |

My doctor took my Diclofenac away said it's not good for long term because of the effect on the stomach. I had a sports massage. Extremely painful but it worked. I only get back ache now and then. If it's bone wearing down glucosamine is usually recommended |

A relative of mine suffers with very bad back pain and they also use a hot water bottle a lot, apply heat to the area. While out and about during the day they also use those back pain heat patches (don't stick directly onto the skin but onto clothing). Hot baths and also heat creams applied to the area can also help, they sometimes also wear a back support if the pain is particularly bad.
I've slipped a disc in the past and also pulled a muscle in my back, pulled the sciatic nerve, never known pain like it, could'nt even bend down to put socks on. Complete rest for a few weeks sorted me out but my relative's problem is more general wear and tear as they are older. |

Lots of folk recommending heat as a treatment. I have found a combination of ice packs and heat works depending on the type and location of the pain.
Doing exercise brings out aches and bruising so I use the ice packs to manage the bruising. Then use heat later. A Tens machine and light stretches and core muscles strengthening helps. Sometimes these need to be done in a pool to ease pressure.
If your back pain is bad you do need to put a lot of time, research and trails into place. Otherwise it's medication for life and as others have said they all have side effects when taken long term.
Things do change as well over time and what once worked may not now. So it's a challenging and testing cycle you go through again to find what works.
On that note I am off for an MRI this morning as I feel a deterioration in the effectiveness of what I have been doing.
Good luck and keep your spirits up by doing things you enjoy. |

Going to drop my 'holistic' penny into the mix....something you can try, which will help (clearly it won't fix the cause....I'm with everyone else on the MRI front) the inflammation and associated pain can be greatly reduced by the use of turmeric. You can get pre-filled capsules, or can buy a massive bag from your local store for a couple of quid. As you probably need to take quite a lot, I'd say it's probably better to take capsules. There is a turmeric users group on Facebook with loads of info, and it won't do you any harm....could do you some good. Takes a few days for you to bein to feel the effects, but keep going! Good luck! |

B had a bad back for years and was in mega pain despite many visits to the doctor he was told to take pain killers . On one occasion the pain was so bad he was taken to hospital. The specialist could not believe he had not been refered as he had to have 4 metal pins in his back.
He is now pain free.
Point I am getting at is insist on seeing a specialist |

Yes, this is another reason getting a diagnosis is important. If your biggest problem is the muscle spasm, then yes, heat may well relieve it. But I discovered because of disc compression I was getting facet joint interferance, and that was the cause of my pain mostly - bony inflammation. Heat is the last thing I need.
The inversion table corrects the compression, but meanwhile I get by far the best pain relief from ice. 15 mins lying on a bag of peas works a miracle for me! |

I've had it for over 30 years, so won't list all the things I've had or tried ..... but will say that the most effective treatment by far, was acupuncture. Definitely worth considering - and no, it didn't hurt!
