Phil Jupitus is still alive and kicking but he's no Ian Dury replacement is he?

Nirvana were and still are massively over-rated. Foo-fighters even more so, some good songs but in the main totally bland and ironically the sort of dull and uninspiring rock that Grunge was supposedly the antithesis too

so which bands do you rate? I can't say I'd ever describe Nirvana as bland even though I know they're not to everyone's taste..

"so which bands do you rate? I can't say I'd ever describe Nirvana as bland even though I know they're not to everyone's taste.."

I said foo fighters are bland. Nirvana were just over rated. There were many bands at that time such as Pixies, Jane's Addiction, mudhoney, Sonic Youth or Dinosaur Jr who either did the whole grunge thing far better or were far more innovative and exciting. Saw nirvana twice and was underwhelmed both times

agree with you besides the Pixies (I can appreciate them but can't get into them at all) and Dinosaur Jr, who I think can be pretty boring..much prefer Sebadoh..think it's harsh calling Nirvana overrated in this day and age as well, what does that make coldplay and muse? anyway, the OP stands

Am I allowed to say 'Oasis are a big pile of shit'?

I like some Nirvana material.

Also like some Foo Fighters tracks

Have been known to like some Oasis stuff.

Its actually quite rare to find someone who truly, honestly loves everything a band produces (unless you are a 16 yr old in which case photogenic ability seems to have more weight than actual musical ability).

Personally i love Pink Floyd and have done most of my life but I will be the first to admit some things they have done are quite questionable.

I agree, although Guided By Voices are a band who are very prolific and have a formula but it's a good one and I can't say there's a great deal of their's I don't like

I didn't really like nirvana and thought Kurt Cobain was an insufferable bore. Apparently he hated nirvana fans, he thought they weren't cool enough for him.

I'm not saying it's fact but I heard it on a documentary. It's why he made In Utero, it was meant to be an album that put the fans off them.

I love nirvana, have done since I was a kid, never heard that kurt cobain thought his fans werent cool enough, i heard he just hated the fame. He was a troubled man who suffered alot of mental pain and for me that can be heard in his voice, yes he was not the greatest singer or guitar player but he moved me. I must have heard the nirvana unplugged where did you sleep last night a million times but even now I cry when I hear it.

the only people in utero was meant to put off were the motley crew and bon jovi fans who bought nevermind and thought Nirvana was another band of the same ilk..it was a good album but very cleanly produced, in utero was going back to what they really wanted to sound like..

I can see how he didn't want his band to end up being part of the lowest common denominator or lumped in with the rest of the top 40..

anyway, I didn't plan on this becoming a Kurt bashing thread so feel free to continue hanging out with the fab clique

it's not as much as a discussion as much as it is folks saying wether or not they like Nirvana...but as I say it's subjective and I wasn't expecting a consensus...oh well whatever nevermind

Loved Nirvana.. still do. I remember being at work on a night shift, and hearing at about 2am or thereabouts, that Kurt died. First time I was truly gutted over a stranger dying.

I rspect others opinions, but to me, that was the first loss of a talent that got me in the throat.

'Nevermind' was the first full album I remember fucking to with my first love when I was 17.

I have a hard time deciding whether that or Depeche modes 'music for the masses' is my favourite album of all time.

It's a well known fact he hated mainstream success. There's various disdainful quotes direced at 'jocks' and mainstream metal fans. And while I can see a point and to an extent sympathise ultimately it smacks of elitism. And ultimately what did he expect when they signed to Geffen?

I like what I like without being stereotyped.

Saw the Foos this year and have to say Dave Grohl came across as a top bloke, as opposed to some of his needy teenage fans...

Nirvana were awesome.

Have to agree about Pink Floyd, but some of the more Prog stuff I still have nightmares about.

Pixies, all time fave, as a lot of peeps don't know em.

Muse, they can put on a show!

And my final curveball is System Of A Down. Not a fan of Thrash Metal per se, but it just hits my switch bizarrely!

I thank you!

Possibly, but after the beat-down I got from expressing an opinion that the Beatles 'had a couple of good songs but were ultimately overrated', I'm treading carefully in music threads!

To us nervana were a tallentes band with some good tracks but who's "story" was more important than the music.

Dave grohl has gone on and made success with several bands where the music was what it was all about, unfortunately he will never shake the stigma of being nivarnas drummer.

But I bet Grohl likes his needy teenage fans. Not really a fan of the Foo's but he comes across as quite genuine.

When you attend a concert you are all there for the same reason, because you enjoy the bands music. That includes the teenagers, young kids, the older generation and the people who think they're so cool because they liked the band when they were playing to a dozen people in the back room of pub. The band won't differentiate between you, they won't see any fan as being more important than the other.

Tis true. But when you have been standing at a concert since two, watching a fantastic line up, all doing it for charity, then have a group of whiney teenagers turn up at ten for the headline act, see them stamp over everyone to get to the front and hear them bleat but we NEED to be at the front...

Went to a Green Day gig and aoart from the mosh pit, everyone rocked but were polite about it...

I coukd just be old and grumpy though
