self check outs

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

So at our local asda, if you shop after 10pm there are no tills on. You MUST use self check outs.

It's a frickin nightmare. The store is just way too busy, even at 11pm. There were people literally queuing down the aisles, others leaving full trollies and just going home.

Anyway being a narky old git at the best of times, I had a word with one of the two staff who were running round like idiots trying the police the carnage.

I was told that the idea is that by 2018 ALL stores will be self check out at ALL times.

If true, seems like lunacy to me !

I hope not, I rarely use one without having to wait for assistance because something's gone wrong and that "unexpected item in the bagging area" thing drives me crazy.

Well Sasster you can imagine my delight at being behind 2 african ladies who spent £320 on bras

The only other thing in their trolley was a cucumber and 3 tomatoes. Dunno why it just tickled me that

it actually takes 30% longer time wise to self scan compared to a checkout manned by a member of staff

The speed thing doesn't surprise me as my first job on checkouts was when u still had price tickets on every item! The time is printed on each receipt and I used to challenge myself to put through each customer in 3 mins or less...that was also in days where people still mainly paid by hand written cheque

What annoys me is when someone runs a weekly shop through them. It's clearly not quicker for them and causes huge delays for everyone else!

They are good in places like Tesco express where you are just grabbing a few things but beyond that I'm not a fan

In the middle

I won't use them and think they are terrible things, I had a traumatic experience in asda when they first bought them into my local one and have avoided them ever since

theyre ok for a few items - not enough space to manage a trolley full - but they fail too often for my liking -

oh these arent your normal basket size ones, these have the belts, the difference being you load them up, you scan them all through and you pack it all

they are 'designed' to take a trolleys worth of shopping (allegedly)

6 of these + about 20 of the basket ones and two staff running round like idiots trying to control it all

Result = mayhem

How will partially sighted, blind and otherwise disabled people manage? My father has very little sight left and a self service checkout would be a nightmare for him and being a proud man he wouldn't ask for or want to be seen needing help.

I'm quite happy to use them as often the queue is much shorter than the manned checkouts. My own issue is the ones that tell you 'please put the item in the bag' I mean how thick are we

I caused havoc at my local asda last year on the self scan checkouts

called in after late shift did my shopping and then when trying to scan items it came up unknown item

assistant comes over and scans it again works fine

next item = unknown again assistant rescans great

every item that i tried to scan was an unknown , till the penny dropped

i removed my works ID from round my neck

Yes it was scanning my works ID

I think given disability discrimination atc they'll have to keep 1 or 2 manned tills open during busiest hours, but I could be wrong

If there were 25 staffed checkouts you would get through quicker

Everything is going self checkout, from superstores to airport check in. All in the name of saving a few quid, to me it is stupid.

I did read in a report that on an average week the superstores that have self service have roughly 15 items an hour stolen, due to them being hard to scan.

Put the last item back in the bagging area.

Near Edinburgh..

We watched a more mature looking gentleman get so annoyed about the constant alerts - That he gave a Punch to the till screen and break it before leaving his 6 bottles of Wine sitting all nicely in the holder and walking out the shop telling security he wouldn't be back in the shop again.. They never stopped him for the damage or anything.. just closed the till off

I made the mistake of waiting in a queue behind a woman and her 2 kids who had a small trolley full.

She proceeded to let the kids do the scanning.

Omg it was a nightmare.

thing was the whole shop was busy so I thought I had joined the best queue

I never join any queue that has children in it. Whether it's the supermarket , post office or passport control I will always avoid. The parents priority is quite rightly the child so there full attention isn't on the job in hand.

I was told today that my local tesco has self scan x you take the scan thing with you and add it up as you go along.

Then just pay at the end without having to scan at the checkout.

It will be like the banks it will all go automated than in a few years they will reopen the personal service till. In the future though they are looking at R/F packaging so no scanning just push your trolly through an arch and zing all listed and just to pay for. I do think putting even one on the checkout would be nice though for people who are prepared to wait.

Of course for each self scan bank of 4 they shoot 3 checkout operators and use their salaries to pay for all the extra shoplifting that happens.

"I prefer self checkouts definatly faster "

Depends on what you're buying.

It's fine for a few items but my local ASDA has become fully self-service (aside from two tills) and trying to put a full weekly/monthly shop through is a nightmare. - Especially when the machine has a hissy fit about a supposed unexpected item or thinks an item hasn't been placed in the bagging area when it HAS, or simply when it decides it needs assistance for no apparent reason or it wants a member of staff to I.D you...

It takes a lot to make my blood boil but if I need to do a big shop now, I'll travel further afield.
