I had the mirena coil for a year and I hated it. Made me so grumpy! Hormones were everywhere and it didn't feel 'right' if that makes sense? I didn't have any weight gain on it tho more an appetite loss. I'm back on Depo and much happier. Good luck with whatever you decide tho. You can always have it taken out if you decide it's not for you. Everyone is different x |

I'm on my third, slight issues with second being incorrectly fitted but wouldn't consider not having one. Still use condoms for safe sex but amazing for reducing/almost stopping periods. |

I've just read a fair few horror stories about the pain and cramping afterwards. And that periods are heavy and painful.
But at the moment my periods are tremendously painful and heavy any way ( I have to wear a tampon as well as a pad) I think it's worth a try x
I've read you can have local anaesthetic when it's fitted so I'll definitely opt for that |

I've had one since I was 34 now 49 best thing I've ever had done. No periods whatsoever just a bit of discomfort when you have it fitted first was the worst and then it gets easier.
I know a few on here have had nightmares with them but the majority of my friends have them fitted with no problem. Good luck

I had a coil for nearly ten years, had it removed when I was treated for abnormal cells. Never had a problem. Depo made me grumpy and killed my libido.
I'm getting a mirena soon |

"I had a marina put in a couple of months ago. No problems so far and very short light periods instead of the usual week long heavy one's. Bloody bliss. "
That's really good I'm hoping it'll sort my periods out too , it's nightmare at the moment.
I couldn't eat my tea the other night the pain was so bad |

I was booked into have one fitted and cancelled at the last minute. My period are only 1-2 days and the nurse said they'd be 4-5 days on the coil and heavier. And I didn't want the hormone one as I don't get on well with hormones. |

After yrs of being told by G.P to go on the Mirena coil I finally gave in 5 months ago....I had heard all horror stories so was dreading it. Having it fitted was just like a smear for me and I had no bleeding after. My periods have gradually shortened and now are just spotting. Pain is gone so I love it !
The only side effect I got is my boobs wont stop growing lol and are really firm !
I just wish I'd tried it years ago xx |

I had a copper 7 IUD in 1984 and fell pregnant on it.
Had a Mirena in 1995 and the first one was great. The next one was agony to have fitted but that was down to the fact the doctor was a novice - and the last one was also painful to have fitted and just didn't feel 'right' afterwards. I had it removed 2 months later.
The first one stopped my periods for the years it was in - bliss! I think it must be hit and miss when it comes to fitting and how your body reacts to it afterwards. Good luck x |

If you've had kids you probably won't have a problem. However ive just spent 53 hours (not that I was counting or anything) in hospital because it caused me so many problems. I had it in on Monday morning and out on Tuesday evening. Was in so much pain and bleeding so much I thought I was going to die. I'm sorted (ish) and recovering now. But missing 35 hours of work (so far) is not the outcome I'd hoped for. |

I had a mirena for really heavy irregular periods. I had big pains the evening it was fitted and the next day but they sorted themselves out. It took nearly 6 months for my period to completely settle, but it was great when it did. I had no bleeding most months and then a light period every few months. Im thinking of having another fitted as things are getting the same as they were, now. |

Ive had a mirena coil for 4 years and its great,.it stopped my periods completely.
It is not painful to have it inserted. It depends what your pain threshold is like but its at worst uncomfortable. There may be spotting for 2 weeks whilst the body is adapting but nothing dreadful.
And it cant be felt by men when having sex either, like ive heard some people claim,.how can it when the coil is fitted inside the uterus. Maybe the strings are felt but these can be clipped by a nurse. The strings arent made out of razor blades tho, people tend to exaggerate somewhat. |

"Really!!
Hubby will be happy if I have that side effect too! Lol
Mind you I don't want them to I'm already a DD
I'm going to go for it, "
I was a 34D Im now a 36E and still growing ! My hubby loves it lol......
I have lots of 'womens' problems and have had pid and lots of things that the merina coil apparently can cause so I was dead against it !
Docs also tried injections to induce a fake menopause and it was hideous..... night sweats, mood swings, no libido and weight gain !
But nothing bad with the coil at all ! Just give it a try as you never know it may be well worth it ,) |

I am on my second mirena coil and think they are great, I have not had a period in almost six years and no pain at all, I have been told that if you have had children it is much easier and can be difficult to fit one anyone who has not had kids |

Ive had one, it worked brilliantly for me and lots of people I know can't speak more highly of them.....I suffer from VERY heavy periods and when I had my coil I very rarely bled and when I did it was very light....
I liked it so much that I kept it after removal....its in a little specimen jar |

Ive not had children naturally and whilst admittely it was a bit fiddly and she needed to apply a little more force , it wasnt terrific pain, just uncomfortable |

My advice would be to get it fitted at your local Gum clinic not your doctors, they fit more so are usually much more efficient, my first was fitted by my doc and was much more painful, I also did not stop bleeding for 9 months!! Had a scan and they said it had not been fitted high enough! Had it removed at the Gum Clinic and another one fitted, not much pain and I have not had any problems at all, bleeding stopped and periods have been virtually nonexistent good luck x |

Having total nightmare with my Mirena. Had it put in in April, been on strong painkillers ever since. (Waiting for scan which is happening in 3 weeks time to find out where it is, as Dr not sure if its in canal and not where it should be!) It was hell to put in, I was literally climbing the walls. (even though everywhere I read it said it was like having a smear... like hell it was!) Family Planning Dr couldnt insert, Consultant had major issues inserting too. FP Dr asked would I mind leaving it in till after scan as she refused to let me go through the pain of having it inserted again. Personally..... id never advise anyone to have one inserted ...... unless pain was their kink!!!!! (And have had Drs tell me iv got a high pain threshold)
But im just one person..........
Good luck with whatever suits you. If you dont try you wont know. Everyone is different. |

I've had a mirena for about 18 months, had it done at the hospital as I am "difficult". Uncomfortable rather than painful and I have never had children.
I still have a full 7 day period but nowhere near as heavy as before and rarely any pain.
I hope yours goes well, if it is very painful seek medical attention immediately. |
