My bum is really sore

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Ive been cycling to work every day for 5 weeks now and my bum is really sore.

I have a Raleigh Caprice girly vintage style bike with a comfort seat, so its hardly a racing bike with a tiny seat, but it still hurts.

Is my posture incorrect, do I need a new saddle , will my bum eventually harden up or do I just have a big fat ass.

The pain is in the coccyx area, or thereabouts

Maybe your position is wrong, I went out for a ride after being off mine for a few months and today my bum bones hurt when I sit, but no discomfort anywhere else, maybe you need the saddle position adjusting

Have you considered using something soft to sit on? Like a small child, or a nice little dog?

Get cycling shorts I believe they have padding.

If you've got a big arse, you need a big seat.

First thing I did when I bought a new bike was to get the biggest saddle I could.

Still bloody hurt though.

Felt like I had a residency at one of Barrymore's party's

If you have been riding for a few months its not just the seat, it only takes me a few rides to get used to mine again, go for a bike fit, it might be the position of your saddle

You can get gel covers for your bike saddle. That will help.

I've been wondering for sometime whether this is a woman thing where the coccyx hurts from riding, I've also tried gel saddles and the like...

Saddle height and position correction can alleviate a lot of pain for a time. Eventually though some degree of saddle sore kicks in.

I wear no underwear with a pair of padded shorts. Less clothing to chafe against the bobby dazzlers.

thank you for your replies

Yes viccy I have considered something to sit on, I was thinking of a fit guy with a 9 inch cock rather than a dog or small child, more shock absorbant I feel.

Jack, the size of my backside a three seater sofa would be ideal.

And I just can't wear cycling shorts, apart from the fact that I really don't have the body for them, my bike is not the type to warrant serious cycling gear,(it has a wicker basket on the front) wearing a helmet is bad enough. It would be like wearing full leathers on a disability scooter.

I still wear my dresses and skirts, sometimes theyre a pain when they ride up. I'm surprised my extra padding on my bum hasn't cushioned the pain

Wear the padded shorts under the skirt.......it's what I do if I ride my granny bike

It could be the saddle height.

I would advise getting some cycling shorts as the padding will help greatly, don't wear underwear underneath as thatvwill rub and cause more discomfort. What is more important looks or confort.

Get a gel seat it will help, but not as much as the shorts. A suspension seat post might work, try the tyres the harder they will help with rolling resistance. That means you wont have to pedal as hard, so less rubbing.

Look at that saddle... like sitting on a razor blade as per the man in the advert.

This!

I'd never go out in my cycling shorts but I wouldn't go on my bike without them hidden under my joggers.

Oh... and you wear them like knickers... next to your skin. Paw paw cream will help if your skin is rubbed or chammy cream from a bike shop.

You remember the advert as well, you are showing age Tina darling. BTW I know I am old, I have the grey hair to prove it.

Try proper cycling shorts, they have padding in them. Don't wear with them, underwear as it will rub. Maybe look at either a gel saddle, or gel seat cover. You might like the idea of a suspension seat tube, I don't like them but it might help.

I have a girls bike seat, it has a hole in the middle of it. Wouldn't go back to a normal one, although to be fair it's a while since I've had my arse on my bike.

If you go for cycling shorts (which you can wear underneath your skirt) make sure they haven't got a seam in the crotch

get one of those double wide saddles with the springs underneath

if ur bums still sore after that you`ll have to strap a cushion to ur seat

As luck would have it, I am a world renowned expert in this field...

You will need to take a picture of your bottom, nestled onto the troublesome saddle, very thin underwear or none at all would be best.

Send me the picture as soon as possible so I can diagnose what is wrong.

Its actually counter intuitive a bigger saddle doesn't necessarily mean more comfort, the pros use small saddles because there is less weight and less contact. My saddle on my road bike is half the size and twice as hard as the one on my mountain bike, but the road one is soooo much more comfortable. If you go to the bike shop, evans cycles will do and explain to them the problem. They will be able to pick you the right saddle

Also, well done for getting out and riding to work, thats awesome!

Iconic, if you're near Fort Dunlop there's a Specialized bike shop there which will measure your sit bones and advise on the right saddle for your width.

Also, if you find that the seat post keeps sliding down, a piece of pvc pipe slipped over the top, cut to the right height, will stop the seat post sliding down. Nothing worse than peddling with your knees up side your ears!

Thank you all for your help.

I am going for my 6 week bike maintenance check tomorrow so i will broach the subject.

I did find a bike seat by Selle SMP big bum sprung saddle which i might try. Ill also invest in some cycling shorts and wear them under my dress.

I shouldnt moan really, its not as if im a long distance racing cyclist, i only cycle 3 miles every day, but its better than nothing and i do feel fitter even after just 6 weeks.

I also dont know anything about different bike accessories and whats good and what isnt.

Professor i am near to Fort Dunlop and i will go and check out the store, though i dont think i am brave enough

for them tp take measurements of my backside.

Aside from the type of saddle, and i would agree on a smaller saddle, the height of the saddle relative to your extended leg length AND both the height of and reach to your handle bars would affect your posture.

Find the remedy and stick with the cycling.

They don't get a tape measure out. You sit on a memory foam seat and pull your knees up off the floor. Your sit bones make an indentation in the foam and they measure that.
