Problems with alcohol

Another Fab honesty is best thread.
Recent studies show that about 1 in 3 men and 1 in 6 women
may develop some sort of health problem
caused by alcohol
around 1 in 15 men and 1 in 50 women
are physically dependent on alcohol and this is on the increase.
I wonder how many of Fab people think they drink more than the recommended guidlines and possibly have a problem with alchohol?
IE: Drinking most days or binge drinking?
Using alchohol to help you cope with whats going on in your life or in certain situations?
Have friends or family mentioned your drinking before?
Has it created or does it create problems regarding work and relationships etc?
If you do think you are possibly drinking too much what are your reasons for doing so?
And if so, what are you going to do about it or what have you done about it to address the issue?
Looking forward to your Honest replies as usual.

I used to drink too much in my irresponsible youth, did cause some problems, now, I can take it or leave it. I do feel for younger people today, I know I drank to escape. I think we should take a long hard look at why the kids are doing it rather than spend all our effort on trying to discourage it, I think the kids are under immense pressure to perform, at work, at home, socially, even in bed. I think they are surrounded by negative media 100% of the time and they are loaded with debt in a society that doesn't seem to have any sort of community ethic anymore. No wonder they want to get out of it. FFS I'm obviously getting old |

Fucking autocarrot!!
I'm a binge drinker. I have a blowout on wine every so often... maybe once every couple of months. In between I drink next to nothing.
I'll never make that sort of statistic... I'll be the one who smokes herself to death.

I am so well below the published guidelines but have d*unk more in the past and every few months do a blow out. Its a poison so worth treating it as such. I think Im well below average, but just an assumption. |

I admit that I do binge drink when I am out.
I do enjoy a drink and drink fast and past the recommended weekly amount.
I am trying to slow down, drink water too and stop earlier.
I feel once I start I want to keep drinking and what I need to do is realise that I have a gentle buzz going on and keep it there instead of reaching for more...
I don't get bad hangovers considering, bit I do feel way better the day after if I have only had a few, compared to too much.
My tolerance has increased too so that's not good for my body, as to get the buzz I enjoy I force my kidneys to try to work harder to detox me...
I realise all this, yet still enjoy a drink.
I do only drink socially however, unless you count the red wine in my home made bolognaise....

I drink....probably too much but not everyday...in the week I can take or leave alcohol at weekends well the vodka will get opened...my life or finances are not effected by alcohol...I come from a family that likes a drink and it's always been acceptable....my recent trip to Denmark opened my eyes as most of my male relatives are alcoholics...one has been sober for 8 months however still needs someone to escort him to parties and follow him everywhere as if he didn't have that he would be straight on the alcohol..I've work with alcoholics so seen the devastation it can cause... |

Nope not me! My drink taste is far too expensive to drink on a binge.
I have a friend that drinks lots of wine, plus various beers throughout the day, he knows he has a problem but he can't do anything about it. He's got fat as result so I give him a few more years before his liver starts complaining. |

Do you agree that alcohol or drug abuse can only be addressed when the person finally comes to terms that they have a problem and not keep being in denial out it? |

Nah, you can't do the kind of dancing I do if you drink more than one, so I rarely do. If I'm on a meet and the wine is flowing I might have enough to get a bit giggly, then stop.
We only get given one body, I wish I had abused mine less in my life. |

I use to drink at least a couple bottles of wkd a night then if I went out I would binge. Now I don't drink that often at all and if I do I tend to only have a couple as I can't stand the hangovers ( as some will know due to my labour dance ) |

You can only help them if they want to help themselves...the male relative who needs an escort completed chucked his life away...he trained as a solicitor then his dad died and started drinking more and more...then he got done for drink driving...lost his job etc and was ordered to give up drinking or he would go to prison...I have another Danish relative who has pressed the self destruct button after seeing 2 friends burn to death in a car accident which he survived...I tried talking to him at the wedding but got told to fuck off...I gave his girlfriend some advice and told her to speak to me if she needed..if a person is in denial there is no helping them...you can guide them but until I want the help it's pointless trying. |

One of the main reasons I left London was because I was going out drinking so often - normally at least 5 nights a week and a quiet night was around 5 pints. Because I was single and had plenty of sspare time Ivwas cycling 5 days a week and going to tbe gym and I still looked and felt physically fine. I think most people can relate to 'hangover mentals' and what shocked me in to changing my lifestyle was when I became a paranoid mess which I link primarily to alcohol.
These days I havectge balance right, I rarely drink on a school night, most weekends are sober or just a few pints and others are a big and messy night out. We're out in Camden Friday and willve my first big night drinking for several weeks.
What scares me is that I was undeniably a functioning alcoholic for around 2 years and nobody would have guessed. I also know that I have drank enough some nights to have potentially die of alcohol toxicity. |

Yes its common for people to swop one addiction for another unfortunately, whether the addiction is one of the following or they swop one of the following for the other etc.....Alcohol,drugs,sex,gambling,serial daters, shopping, spending money.
These urges are harder to control in people with addictive personalities. In your experience would you agree? |

No not really I have tools etc to curb that and I know myself inside out as to when I feel that I maybe becoming addicted or obsessed with something...I'm one of the lucky ones I suppose who has a good insight to things and how to address it..but that's just me...other people handle addiction completely differently |

If needed every day there is a problem, which can affect you mentally physically and sexually.
I have one blow out here and there but failing that, I'm more a once a week drinker.
Once out with my friends, I stand with a cheeky smile

"I drink a bottle of wine most nights it takes away the stress of life at the moment "
A bottle of vino a night would class you as being alcohol dependent regards the health data guides. |

I have some back problems and have to take pain killers all the time. I thought I might be able to have a break from them occasionally if I had a drink instead. It was rather a nice feeling being shitfaced but I could still feel the back pain and I couldn't bear the amount of calories I'd d*unk ( would rather save them for cake).
The bonus of being a lightweight drinker (once every few months I suppose) is that it only takes one or two glasses to get me off my tits! |

Yes I know but if I don't fancy a drink I don't have one its nice to relax with a drink at home after the stress of each day |

I drink close to a bottle of wine per day. Not all in one go though, two glasses at lunch and two at dinner. Might also have a G&T sundowner... Alcohol is in constant flow. Hardly ever binge (except during the hols)...
Is it a problem? My husband doesn't drink at all and has often remarked that he thinks I drink too much. I do crave it... Come 5pm if I have not had a drink I really feel the cravings. Although I hardly ever get d*unk (and don't drink while swinging as I don't want it to cloud my judgement ) I wish I could do without, mostly because it would be much easier to lose weight, but most of all I wish I didn't enjoy it so much. |

If you wish you could do without alcohol and the cravings you get maybe you should think about seeking professional advice to help you stop? No shame in seeking help if you feel you need help in stopping. |

When I was growing up, the only way to drink was LOTS. I didn't know anybody that didn't drink other than friends who smoked instead. There was a time where I was drinking night and day when I had nothing else to do. I cleaned up because I was sick of never really being awake and doing the things I really wanted to do. Didn't last.
I was facing depression seriously (as in seriously losing) between 2005 and 2009 and started to hit the drink like never before. Slept rough a few times, nearly died of hypothermia and then went home to change and back to work. Sometimes got there with double vision and barely able to hide the fact that I'd been through enough tequila, whiskey and vodka to kill somebody, but hey, haven't we all been there when work won't give you a sure weekend?
On a normal night of going from work to home, I'd walk - which took half an hour - and usually slammed back four or six beers before I got there, then stayed up all night just drinking at leisure because sleep was painful and full of night terrors.
Really cleaned up in 2009 during counselling. My therapist said that anything over 3 pints at any one time was still classed as drinking too much but I still drink 4 or 5 at a time which is once a month or two. However I am really stretching it and 5 pints will cause me kidney pains.
I enjoy a beer but never count on it. It helps that my guts are wrecked and cant handle it anymore (cancer biopsy every two years via a camera in my stomach).
But I am always focused on feeling at my fittest and being 100% lucid and you wouldnt know it to look at me and see a crispy critter who's nearly killed himself with booze! |

I'm a classic binge drinker, which I know is also a bad thing...
Never drink on my own, won't touch a drop for a couple of weeks, then go for it on a night out. That's getting less frequent now as get older though. |

When I was younger I'd think nothing of drinking a bottle of Bacardi a day, on a session far more.
Now I rarely drink, if I fancy one I will have one but it can be months in between. I do drink if I go to a party and end up pissed but to be honest even this is getting less I will now go to a party and not drink.
Went away last week and had a few cocktails one night.

I can take or leave alcohol it doesn't bother me not drinking, if we go to a club I happily drive because beer doesn't interest me, but my issue is I can't have 1, once I've got the taste that's it I'm getting d*unk, I don't particularly like alcohol so wouldn't think I'll just have a couple of pints, beer is here for 1 thing and that is to get us d*unk, so I'm either getting d*unk or not drinking |

I don't touch a drop during the week, my shift pattern and job won't allow it.
But I start drinking Friday lunchtime and stop around Sunday evening. That is unless we are going out, then I don't drink as I am always the driver. |

I drink more than the advised amount by the BMA. I do not have a drink problem.
Fact, the BMA admit that there is no medical evidence to support their drinking guidelines.
Fact, it is not so much how much you drink but how you drink that is important.
Fact, the French have a much healthier and long lived population than us and drink more than twice as much as the BMA recommend we do.
Fact, Nanny does not always know best, and sometimes gives bad advice in full knowledge of the facts. |

Kate has been a heavy drinker for a number of years now. It tends to run in her family. To be fair, she has reduced her intake in recent months.
We've been together over 34yrs now and I can count the number of cross words we've had on the fingers of both hands and every single one has been down to her drinking habits or rather my intolerance to them.
We've put a lot of things on hold over the last couple of years, including meeting Fab friends.
We're getting through it though. |
