Star Wars (original 3 films)...there I've finally said it!
Great to get that off my chest although I feel a back lash quicker than you can say rebel alliance.
I've tried to like them like committing to a failed marriage- I've put the time in, I bought the trilogy in the stupid box set just cause it looked more interesting than the film itself, I wanted to like them...no...LOVE them! But alas I don't, as a big sci-fi fan too I can't get my head around why it ticks the box for some- maybe if I was there at the beginning when shit cgi was a staple of the 70's child I would have been blown away by it all.
I'll watch aliens, predator, matrix (1st one only), the underrated Sunshine, blade runner to name but a few....yoda with his annoying voice and backward sentences an co can stay in a galaxy far far away from me. |

Original 3 films much better than the last 3 films, the last 3 films too much emphasis on cgi special effects for me.
Are you a Star Trek fan?
I'm a Star Wars guy, (also really love Aliens, Predator, and most sci-fi), but i just can't get into Star Trek at all. |

Should add too many films these days rely too much on cgi special effects. Once saw an inter_iew with Jackie Chan (who i'm a big fan of) and he said the same. He does'nt have cgi in his films for the most part, (some newer ones yes, but all his old films were real stunts) when he does a stunt like jumping from one building to another, or being thrown through a glass window, or hanging from a ladder attached to a helicopter while its in flight then he does it for real. |

Omg I love JC what about the slow mo of him recreating the buster keaton omage falling from the clock- ouch.
To help answer above q's:
-Seen Star Wars every Xmas like most kids, always knew I should love em but never had 'the' feeling.
- Star Trek can be a grey area, shatner films a bit cringy but gab their charm, liked TNG when it wasn't being overly preachy.
- I prefer a good sci-fi that doesn't rely on cgi too much (starship troopers seems to come to mind of a guns, grenades n aliens type film) |

I believe it was Sir Ian McKellen who broke down crying on the green screen set of The Hobbit because not only did he have no environment to work with, his co-stars were providing the voices from a different room so he had no human contact either to act on.
It's all fine and grand and marvellous what they can do with CGI now but even the original Star Wars got the set design right. The CGI is there to help actors, not replace acting. |

You're not alone, i'm a film geek and i just don't get it either, takes about 5 minutes max before i tune out.
Same with LOTR, just find it tedious and over long |

There may be a reason why you're such a big Sci-Fi fan but don't like Star Wars.
Star Wars isn't Sci-Fi. It's fantasy. Sure it has all the aesthetic elements of sci-fi like space and aliens etc.. but the actual story of it all is basic fantasy. Knight goes off to save a princess etc..
So that may be why.
However, I wouldn't base a criticism of a film around CGI. I mean, if a film comes out this week and it looks horrible then that's valid. But a film made 40 years ago is bound to look dated. Every film one day will look dated. The Matrix, Sunshine, all of them will. It's why you have to make sure the base of your story/characters are strong. Good story and characters last forever, good CGI will always eventually look dated.
I mean, one of the greatest films of all time is Raiders of the Lost Ark and I don't care that the ending CGI looks dated (Although I love the charm of early 80's special effects) Because the film itself and it's characters are all wonderful. |

Hey, I see your point but I was saying that cgi for star wars was good even back then.
I agree with you in that it's the story that should charm or not an for me Star Wars doesn't |

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
I think people are different and like different things. I'll never not like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings but I won't sit there saying to people 'you're wrong for not liking them'. I don't like many many classic films, and watch certain others on autopilot, but if someone says to me that I am wrong for not enjoying them it just grinds my gears. I know my taste, and know what I like.
As said above Star Wars is really more a fantasy story done in a sci-fi setting. The original films are looking dated, and the sequels' CGI looks awful now (and the stories sucked donkey balls. Thank god the franchise is no longer in Lucas' hands), but its a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. |

Away from SF, or Sci-Fi, the one film I really wanted to enjoy but couldn't was Citizen Kane.
Do much hype, finally got around to sitting down to watch it about 4 or 5 years ago but just couldn't get through it, found it disengaging and slightly boring. |

I like sci-fi that raises issues and makes people really question society.
I really wish they'd make Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 for the modern audience because it really is today's 1984. Bradbury seemed far fetched back in the '50s, but there are more fantasy ideas made real there than in any other book.
He imagined flatscreen TVs and interactive television (X-Box Kinnect), the decline of literature in a world that didn't want to believe in religion anymore and where governments banned reading because it gave people ideas.
He also created a robot dog that hunted people on the run. FEMA has one of those already but they're being weaponised as we speak.
On top of that, his fictional society is just like ours and that is the dystopian nightmare. |

Star Wars is just a children's film. Goodies in white , baddies in black, orphans and a talking frog. And everyone lives happily ever after.
I used to watch it with my children but they've grown out of it now. |

But with a few adult references. Darth Vader's Nazi german helmet and the general WWII theme, the almost-incest incident of Luke and Leia, Han blowing Greedo's guts out in a dive bar, Darth chopping off Luke's hand, Leia strangling Jabba to death... |

Star wars is shite!!! I did film & tv design at uni and had to break that film down.. It essentially came down to George Lucas was more than likely high when writing the script and it makes no sense and is extremely flawed!!
Give me spaceballs anyday! |
