So it seems that only 1 in 10 who have done the ice bucket challenge have actually donated. Now, I know that many on here have before the outrage begins. I'm not talking about the forums. But as I've suspected for lots of people it's been simply a means to show off on social media. |

"One guy I know that did it didn't even know it was for a charity. He just thought it was the latest "fad""
So did my step kids when school friends nominated them on facebook. I told them unless they were prepared to donate their pocket money they were not doing it. They didnt..  |

Really annoying isn't it. I'm not a fan of celebrity culture either, but in the paper not so long ago it was showing that there were a few who didn't even realise it was for charity, which was frustrating - might explain some of the copycat behaviour.
I know it raised a good amount of money for a variety of charities, so I suppose it's something to be appreciative of. Just annoying because it could be so much more. |

God forbid that some folk should get caught up in a "craze" for a bit of fun,without knowing why the craze started in the first place.ignorance is bliss,so they say.
Perhaps all you great folk could show them the error of their ways,and spread the word.

I was thinking the same thing. So what if some people are not awear pits a charity event who made you lot the killjoy police! Now put your hands in your pockets and make a donation to comic relief, at least they like a laugh trying to raise cash. |

No killjoy police here 
Just know how important it is for charities, both the awareness and donations - I agree that 10% giving and learning is better than 0%, I think it's just a shame there's not more out there.
Comic relief always get money from me too, but thanks for the encouragement

Sorry but as far as I'm concerned if they didn't know why they felt the sudden urge to tip a bucket of iced water over their heads then what's the point?
Because all their 'friends' we're doing it.
Although I doubt the 'throw yourself of a cliff but not for charity' challenge wouldn't be quite so successful - but I could be wrong.
I've donated. Not because I've done it. Not because I refused a challenge. (It would have to have been made in person as I don't do bookface!). But because I understand the cause behind it.
The 9/10 have just for it because they didn't want to feel left out. No other reason.
But at least it's raised awareness with some and boosted the charity coffers.

I did it for both charities and posted both my donations on facebook. But i know a lot of people that did the challenge as a mere look at me. My daughter refused to do ger challenge and donated the £10 forfiet |

I'm particularly fond of all the people that mention the frivolous use of water and how some people in the world don't have access to water.
There are plenty of ways on a daily basis that the average person uses more water than they should for some tasks, or use it for means that someone without water may consider frivolous. There's also other forms of wastage such as food, luxury items that use resources that can be used for other things. Are we really to believe that they're above all of that?!
To the people that did donate, it was a fantastic campaign that raised money for charities that wouldn't have received donations had it not been for this, and being just water and ice, meant a lot of people could take part. |

Exactly. They just didn't get the message. "
But others did get the message. It was also to raise awareness of MND/ALS. Most people didn't even know what the condition was or how people suffered.
Even things like race for life struggle to get people's sponsorship back from them. I got so many emails about it when I did mine even though all my fundraising was done online! |

I think the statistics are out. A lot of people donated to other organisations. I work for a hospice a lot of people donated to us. We care for people with MND as well as lots of other debilitating diseases
At the end of the day it got a lot of awareness out there about the disease and people will notice the MND charity in future and support it where as in the past they wouldn't of had a clue |

There was another ice bucket challenge fot macmillan. I did this one too. And it was on their official website too. |

It was always going to be like that ...but if even a fraction of those who participated in the challenge donated then it was worth it ...quite a few charities benefited considerably so its was all good in my book ....what saddens me is the people that pick holes in these things only looking for the bad in folk  |

I donate to charity monthly,each month different charities are chosen to receive donations or equipment. I'm not chucking a bucket of iced water over my head for any reason although some I saw were quite funny |

People also happily watch children in need, sport relief etc etc and dont donate and thats life as sad as it is.
Just look at it from another adpect that a lot of people have donated and charities have benefited which they would not have if it was started. |

I already donate to 2 charities every month. I just don't need to make a song and dance about it. |

The thing is that I am not against giving neglected causes a higher profile. That is highly commendable.
It's the 'sheep' mentality and the 'look at me' attitude which was mentioned above which is rather off-putting. And lives lived through social media. Or the attitude of 'look how caring I am, I 'liked' this picture/threw a bucket of ice water over myself. Therefore, I am a worthy person'.
There are so many out there who simply do - they work tirelessly with charities and never ask for anything, including kudos, as any reward. For example, the volunteers at the hospice my mother was in - one of whom was the wife of the antique expert who's name I cannot remember - Dickinson I think. They give of their time and no one knows anything about them.
Though I am not religious, I like what it says in the Bible: "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets ... to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full."
