Just heard a Radio 4 sports journalist ask a Dutch sports journalist -
“What effect will it have on the Dutch psyche if your team win the World Cup?”
Surely the answer is that those interested in football will probably deck their cars and houses with little flags and experience a temporary sense of euphoria which will quickly fade as things return to normal.

well if i can twist that question just a little and ask yourself what effect would it have on the people if England won it?? do you think it would just be a bit of silly flag waving out cars etc etc and then fade after a few days...........or would the feelgood factor last a little longer??? would young kids be influenced by the event? teenagers? as the dutch have never won the world cup just think what it must have been like in 1966.....and our commentators still rant on about it some 44 years later |

Unlike the Dutch, we've only appeared in one world cup final, but at least we won it. I think the Dutch, having lost two consecutive cup finals (1974 to Germany, 1978 to Argentina), will feel absolutely ecstatic that they've finally managed to do it. It is a common belief in football that Holland are the best team NEVER to have won it. I'd like to see a new name on the trophy and, apart from Brazil, no other team has ever won the world cup outside of their own continent. That statistic will change on Sunday and I think it would be fitting for it to be Holland. |

On behalf of my family and I, I can assure you that had England won the world cup it wouldn't have made one iota of difference to our lives whatsoever!
I thank you! |

If your question is directed at me, Milf, then yes I'd say your initial scenario is about right.
Southampton (where I live) was awash with flags and banners, the streets were full of cars with those little flags and there was a sort of party atmosphere. The moment we got knocked out it all disappeared like Scotch Mist. I think if we'd won the World Cup then it would have hung around for a few more days. The Sun would have trumpeted 'our boys' as national heroes and Wayne Rooney would be being touted as the most handsome player in the tournament instead of as the ugliest (I saw that on Yahoo yesterday) And no...I don't believe it would solve any of our problems and change our lives for the better.
