Its going both ways, the sneering and contempt from some separatists is quite unpleasant also.
The one thing we can be sure of is that this debate has soured terribly the relations between Scotland and the rest of the UK. Whatever the outcome next week, Scotland will be very divided and we will all have to pick up the pieces.
On a lighter note, whichever side loses will blame the English! |

With what currency? If you keep the pound...and I would be happy to see it either way...then you will SIMPLY NOT be independent. Bank of ENGLAND will set your interest rates.
RBS and several other major companies have already said they will up sticks and move HQ to England if vote goes yes.
I think the decision is entirely up to Scotland. I don't have an opinion either way. But a yes vote will certainly leave Scotland in the shit! But hey....it will be their shit! |

I havent seen any hatred on here, I have elsewhere though and not just between england and scotland but have heard of it between scots themselves! Whats wrong with people, honestly.
It makes me sad. Before all this started there was the usual friendly banter now its getting a little over the top. I cant wait for it to be over to be honest getting a little fed up with it.
For anyone reading this I hope it all turns out bonnie for everyone, regardless of your position. xx |

The SNP were voted in (twice) with a huge majority and everyone knew a referendum on independence was one of their major plans, therefore the SNP are giving the majority voters exactly what they voted for. |

In all honesty I would say a lot of it is a counter reaction to smug remarks initially made there is always that sort of thing on here no matter what. If you think its bad now you want to see what it will be like if the yes vote goes through. |

"Think people and everything else to do with Scottish independence is just going OTT"
Are you for real?
Alex Salmond is the vehicle that is close to ripping our country apart!
It's going to not only affect Scotland if it prevails, but the remaining parts of the Uk.
The damage that has been done by the NATS will take a long time to repair. I'm Scottish, but also proud to be British. I think this is one of the most damaging things to happen to our country. |

Referendums are funny old things. They actually seem to generate more interest in politics than general elections. I wonder why that is.
I guess it's because they cross party divides and actually get people talking about things. Perhaps we should have more of them and get more people involved in politics again. The politicians would dread it because they would actually have something to discuss instead of drivel on about their own narrow brand of how things should be in the country. |

You use the words, 'ripping our country apart'. How so, Scotland has been a country for centuries and not an appendage to London or England, its not a Shire and perhaps if it had been treated better it would not be having a referendum x |

Independence......more like isolation
Splitting from UK would cause significant social unrest ......the current situation is not fair across the whole of UK.....there is too much wealth in and around London....and the wealth is held there by the big fish for their personal gain...why spend £15 billion on crossrail...and then at same time not fill pot holes in roads in rest if UK...its just selfish...London does not need a new airport... The capacity can be taken up by investing in other regional airports, why do many have to travel miles to get a flight from London....simple because that destination isn't available locally to them.........what is needed is a fairer distribution on the national wealth across the whole of UK...including Scotland........Hull gets £400 per capita to spend on infrastructure...
London gets £5000....

So totally agree - my bloodline is English/Welsh/Irish, but I've always seen myself as British and have been proud of my country - which is all of Britain, including it's Scottish component.
Now somebody is trying to rip my country apart and I feel that I have no say in the matter... I'll never forgive the Scots if they break up my nation, and even if it's a "No" vote, then it will take years - lifetimes to heal the rift.
I'm already loosing old friends in Scotland over this, and business associates are telling me that they are already shutting trading links with Scotland, because they need lines of supply and a customer base that has future stability.
I totally support democracy - but this is a small minority having a huge and undemocratic impact on my nation - I feel so sad....

About 5 or 6 years ago a small country not far from here nearly went bankrupt but for a huge bail out from the European central bank.
They now have huge unfinished housing estates and the bust which followed now means 10s of thousands of their bright and young have emigrated to NZ and Australia. There just isn't any work there. I suppose the ones left behind would say they are happy with their independence and it was a price worth paying.
Question is will Scotland follow them down that route or will their North sea oil be enough to keep them out of that particular bit of crap. Bit of a gamble isn't it.
One thing they do have in their favour is that all the instability in Russia and the middle East means that the price of Oil is likely only to go northwards. |

Who hates the Scots, can't say I've really noticed much hatred. I adore my Scottish friends, such a shame when a race get ostracised because of fucking politics. Couldn't give a shit where someone's from, or what colour their skin is as long as they're nice people. Politics and religion have an uncanny knack of driving a wedge between nations. Fuck em, let's all just get on with real life and try to get on eh !!! |

All this about independance, I think scotland should have their independance, England is only worried because they wont have as much control

At the moment the oil price is at something like a two year low and is around $10 a barrel down in just over a month.

To the OP, I think that if you read the whole of the thread and the other Scott's independence threads around that time you will realise that 'the banned from fab post' was an attempt to inject some humour into a debate that has been quite bad tempered at times. Further if you read the whole debate over the last year or so you will also note that although there has been a hardening of opinion south of the border, this is a reaction to being continually told that what you say does not count and for the most part views from the south have been very calm and cautionary. The hate has been mainly in Scotland and aimed at Scotts.
Schisms (religious or political) are always nasty. |

I think it's sad that this independence issue has got out of hand. There is no hatred between Scots and the English by the vast majority of people. There is always a small element of extremists that cause much angst throughout the world.
There is much disillusionment with politics at Westminster which seems to be run by a small so called silver spooned group of people who went to the same public school and university in all parties. They are not as bright or capable as they think they are and sadly we drift further and further away from a fair society based on a meritotocrity
It's nothing personal in relation to the English but I understand a strong desire for the Scots to have a polical system which is more representive of their needs and desires.
I am a unionist at heart and would prefer to give more powers to the Scottish parliament yet remain an integral part of the UK but I also see the other point of view.
Perhaps that's one of the reason I enjoy swinging. I've always been very open minded about most things.
Apologies for the rant. Jim |

Op it's just like a messy divorce. Once the subject is open both sides are looking for a way of mitigating the grief by pouring out anger and resentment.

for the amount of blame westminster seems to get for scotlands woes you would kinda forget that scotland has its own parliament that decided scottish issues at a local level..... or do all those msp's just tiddle their thumbs and blame everything on "down south".....
I wouldn't mind so much.. but statistically only half of them (50%) bothered to turn out for their own election last time round.... |

I can confirm that. MSPs pretty much twiddle there thumbs. Certainly since Eck got his majority, virtually nothing has been done ..... Everything he's promising he could have started...he didn't.... |

"I thought it was the Scots who hated the English.
They must do if they want to destroy the United Kingdom, wierd
No hatred here. It isn't about destroying the United Kingdom. It's about allowing a country to stand on its own, without interference from Westminster. I think a lot of Northern Counties wouldn't mind joining us if it were possible. " |

Must say I admire salmond because he seems a lone scot against all the Westminster public school types who are in a panic, they wait 307 years and decide on more powers 10 days ! To go .
The Scottish people are inventive educated and respected world wide (wish we were).
I hope my fellow english people accept the result with grace. |

I don't hate the Scots.
I even dated one once.
The problem is the way the debate has been conducted and the manner in which Alex Salmond has conducted himself.
He comes across, to me at least, as a racist. So Anti-English.
I don't like the fact that, for a decision that will affect 64 million citizens in the United Kingdom, only around 5 million get to make the decision - That seems rather undemocratic to me.
It turns out now, that islanders on Shetland and Orkney - who can't stand the bloke - want to remain part of the United Kingdom and want nothing to do with an independent Scotland.
Is Mr Salmond prepared to allow them their right for self determination?
Not on your life!
And the coverage and the campaigning has just gone on and on and on to the point where I am utterly, utterly sick of it!
Initially I wanted the Scots to vote 'No' - but now I'm of the opinion 'Let them go'
In my opinion Alex Salmond has created a bigger divide that the late, great Margaret Thatcher did in her entire tenure as Prime Minister.
I reckon that the last time that there was such a divide between the Scots and the English was around 307 years ago when the Union was first formed.
Wake me up when September Ends!
