A friend of mine had a similar incident, both paid for each others fuel, didnt realise at the time, the other person did and obviously went back as she had the police on her door step that evening when she got back from work.
Petrol stations take this kind of thing very seriously round this way |

I once paid for someone's fuel who's forgotten their money and hasn't realised. The garage were wanting to call the police and make a big deal out of what honestly looked like a genuine mistake. |

As long as you paid the correct amount, then that's no problem, but can be a right pain to sort out if there's fuel cards involved and if it's very busy!
From someone who works at a petrol station, this happens quite often! Unfortunately, we are not psychic and have to rely on people giving the correct pump number. Although we can ask some specific questions to confirm that it is the correct one.
It's funny when someone doesn't know and points to the direction of their car, or say it's the 'silver' one, but on a forecourt with 16 pumps which are heaving, it could be any of them.
Many a time I've had to sprint out to stop someone from leaving when the correct customer for that pump comes into pay. I don't bother if they've paid more though. |

Unfortunately, people do try it on and petrol stations are not credit facilities. If someone knowingly puts fuel into their car without the funds to pay for it, they are actually committing fraud and we have every right to phone the police. Obviously, we try to solve the problem before that. |

You can put in as much as you like but you just have to know how much you want to put in and pay for it first and that is as much as the pump will administer |

Actually you can get a lot of fuel in Texas considering fuel is under $2 a gallon. Or it was when I was there last year. And yes its a gallon |

I had a similar experience a few years ago, a woman who was running on fumes and had money or cards on her, gave her £10 for fuel, she asked for my address and a few days later i recieved a thank you card with the £10 in it.

Most places in this country, that is the case unless you're paying at the pump. If all drivers had to go into the kiosk first and pay beforehand, and if there was some way of programming that pump to dispense fuel to that amount, it would stop drive offs. |
