Just been out for my first ride on my new bike (haven't cycled since before I had my hip done)...only did about 8 miles but bloody hell do I feel like I've been buggered by King Dong...think I shall be purchasing a gel cover at the weekend - might try strapping a sofa cushion to the seat tomorrow |

"persevere, your delicate derriere will toughen up to the seat within a few days.
Gel seats are just like riding on a sofa! "
I bloody well hope so, I've hopefully got a meet on Saturday, I'd like to be able to sit (or lie) down without fecking wincing |

Go to a Specialized Bike style and get your bottom measured, they will advise on the right size for the width of your 'sit bones'
...and make sure the saddle is high enough, a low saddle adds to saddle soreness. |

Not sure if anyone has already said it, get yourself some cycling shorts as they have padding in them. They wont stop a sore arse, they will ease it a bit. Also helps going commando as there is no seems to rub against you as you ride. |

Seriously? You can get your arse measured? Don't think they'll have a big enough tape |

"Why did you do 8 miles on your first ride? Think of that hip!"
My hip feels fine, the hossie said no problems with cycling...my other side is a bit sore cos every time I stopped to admire the view from the sea wall (not to catch my breath, honest )and stretched my left leg, the nerve damage threatened to start a cramp off, but other than that and a throbbing arse I'm fit as a flea |

"See about a suspension seat post as well, it is not for me as I can't stand them but it might help.
That's my googling for tonight...cheers Racheal "
Think I'm going to be getting one of those as the route I plan to regularly cycle includes a road that hasn't been tarmac'd since Adam was a lad and it does joggle somewhat...on the plus side, attempting to avoid the fecking potholes makes a 6 mile route, more like 16 |

If you buy a bike with an engine it usually comes with a really comfortable seat :p |

It's like a push bike except it does all the balancing for you and all the driving force too.
I can ride a motorbike but I fall off pushbikes :o |

Fear will make you thin:p
If you ride on a track or fast it helps look at the motogp lot they're right hence little gits. Need to be able to muscle the bike around remember it does not want to turn. |

Gel covers tend to rub you on the inside of your thighs.
As someone who rides over 150 miles a week, may I STRONGLY suggest a DECENT pair of padded shorts and some Chamois Cream. You can get both from your local good bike shop - NOT Halfords!
The Chamois cream you rub onto yourself before riding, it reduces friction and it really does work, the pro's use it. |

Thanks Sarah, I doubt I'll ever be more than a casual biker, although I did used to cycle 60 odd miles a week, but I'm definitely thinking of padded shorts - and if I can tempt someone to do the rubbing in, I might get some chamois cream |

Oh yes, do NOT wear underwear beneath your cycling shorts - it will be like riding a cheesewire!
Pearl Izumi, Morvélo, Specialized, Corrine Dennis all do very nice women's specific cycling kit, best to try it in a shop as you wont know if you get on with it buying it online. |
