Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Listening to the Book of the Week on R4 about the rise of homo sapiens. The line that luxuries becoming necessities struck a chord.

What luxury us now necessary for you?

Yes. Even the very poor are expected to be able to access the world through the internet now.

My phone, my addiction to Ben & Jerry's and my platinum fab membership.

Oh. And the servant we keep in the cupboard to wipe our arses, iron the bed sheets daily and remove dog hairs from my suits with tweezers.

A decent bicycle, used to ride £50 specials but I spent more on them than they were worth. I can't justify spending £1000 on a bike, but I know it will last me for years.

Amateur! You need a special room for your suits with a valet to dress you. It is hermetically sealed so that dog hairs cannot contaminate the suits. The servant with the tweezers is for any stray hairs that settle anywhere.

It'll take the skin off your fingers if you're not careful.

And blanching, don't get me on about how it blanches, makes tea.... What was life like before we had one........

It sadly hung up it's flex and departed to kettledom the day before the tap was fitted.

Which was a bugger because the water pressure was too high and it took four days to get a new pressure reducing valve fitted.

Such fickle things kettles, not like a Quooker....

I have a £1800 hoo koo e koo, I do community nursing and use my bike daily to get to my calls, I do over 200 miles a week, people say I'm stupid for spending that on a bike and a bikes a bike but you can really tell a good bike, it flys up hills, if you cycle a lot a good bike is worth its money

Gotta be the smartphone. I didn't realise how vital it would be until I bought one.

yes they are still a luxury that we all take for granted these days, same as many other things.
