I've been suffering really bad from insomnia lately. Normally it's due to depression but I'm deffo not depressed and not ashamed to stay I suffer from depression. I have no idea what it is linked to. I don't feel like there is anything troubling me.. Any ideas how I can minimise it and try and get a good nights kip where I don't wake up 3/4 hours afterwards.

Turn off the computer/phone.
Yoga breathing works for me when I can't sleep. In for 5, out for 5. When done properly the stomach moves, not the chest.
Lavender in your pillow or a heaty wheaty.
When you wake are you hot or cold? Adjust the temperature of the room accordingly.
Get up and go into another room, read for a little while, then try again, don't lie there mulling over the fact you can't sleep, makes it worse.

Tried all of above minus the lavender as it makes me Ill.. I've tried Turing off phone TV and just lieing in the dark. I can just lie there for hours and hours tossing and turning. I never mull over the fact I can't sleep as I know it makes it worse. I'm just sick of not sleeping. Or should I say not sleep well |

Am in total agreement with Redangel.
Also don't drink coffee or anything remotely 'stimulant' for two or three hours before going to bed, and make sure your room is absolutely as dark as it can be...blackout curtains, and no bright displays on alarm clocks visible, etc...the less your eyes have to focus on, the easier the senses shut down.
Best of luck with it anyway, i used to struggle with it but am generally ok now, but it does get you down if you let it. |

I don't drink coffee any more. Gave me serious headaches.. Stopped smoking two years ago. I've tried drinking camomile tea before bed that doesn't work. My bedroom is always completely dark minus the street light that is bang outside my bedroom window. I always out my phone on do not disturb so it doesn't light up for calls texts. I've tried no drinks from like 7pm.. I'm just at witts end.. I went to sleep yesterday after 4 woke up around 9 and was on and off for next few hours think I woke up around 11ish.. And then I woke up shattered felt like I hadn't slept, it's a vicious circle. |

Deep in the bosom of the gentle night
Is when I search for the light
Pick up my pen and start to write
I struggle, fight dark forces
In the clear moon light
Without fear... insomnia
I can't get no sleep
I used to worry, thought I was goin' mad in a hurry
Gettin' stress, makin' excess mess in darkness
No electricity, something's all over me, greasy
Insomnia please release me and let me dream of
Makin' mad love to my girl on the heath
Tearin' off tights with my teeth
But there's no release, no peace
I toss and turn without cease
Like a curse, open my eyes and rise like yeast
At least a couple of weeks
Since I last slept, kept takin' sleepers
But now I keep myself pepped
Deeper still, that night I write by candle light
I find insight, fundamental movement, uh
So when it's back this insomniac take an original tack
Keep the beast in my nature under ceaseless attack
I gets no sleep
I can't get no sleep
I can't get no sleep
I can't get no sleep
I need to sleep, although I get no sleep
I need to sleep, although I get no sleep

Honestly i dont sleep well without a certain pillow, has to be my huge square norweigan duck feather pillow! Cost an arm and leg but it is so worth as i can snuggle into it and get it in any position around my head and im happy!
I also do a little trick where when I breathe in I count one and breathe out count 2 sends me into a really deep sleep x |

I have my teddy my dad gave me when I was a baby and my fave pillow at all times unless I stay over at my sisters. But when I'm there I sleep really good. Dunno what the difference is.
I live alone so maybe could be due to spending so much time alone and today I've spoken to no one all day.
May give the breathing thing a shot. Worse that could happen is it doesn't work.. So I just go 1-2 1-2 until I fall asleep?? |

Remove anything like TV, Radio, computer etc from your bedroom. Only use your bedroom for sex and sleep. Associate you bedroom with sleeping and sex.
When you go to bed make sure your room is quiet and dark.
Avoid naps during the day.
Try taking a walk or have a go on an indoor exercise bike during the day. Never exercise before going to bed.
Have a cup of hot chocolate or warm milk about 45 mins before you go bed. Avoid caffeine.
Try to set a routine for when you go to bed and when you get up.
If all that fails have lots of sex and tire yourself out. Then you can act like a man and roll over and sleep after you have finished lol. |

My bedroom is just for sleeping. I don't do anything else in there beside look for clothes to wear. I rarely get dressed in there and haven't had sex in there for at least a month maybe more..
I've tried exercise doesn't work
Walking too and from work whilst walking loads at work. (2 mile walk either way to work and home. Done it 30isb mins top)
Cut out coffee, smoking.
And nothing seems to be working.
One time I have I think 3 maybe 4 meets in space of a few hours. Slutty I know but you only turn 26 once and I was wide awake for hours after. Sec doesn't seem to tire me out. Not even a work out at the gym. I'm just at a complete standstill. Been trying for hours now and don't feel any closer |

The book Mindfullness has a suggestion that works for me.
It states you need to focus on something you can control and remove all other thoughts. The suggestion, as you have little you can control while in bed, is to make that your breathing.
Focus totally on your breathing. Remove all other thoughts from you mind other than your breathing. Think the word 'in' when breathing in and 'out' when breathing out and stay focussed. Do not allow other thoughts into your head, just keep thinking in and out as you breathe ...
It takes a bit of practice to keep your head clear of other thoughts but if you can you will find you've gone to sleep soon after (when you wake later).
Hope it helps. |

North of The Wall - youll need your vest |
My top tip, sounds strange but works for me when Im on different time zones and cant get to sleep at the right local time....
Have a radio on very very low in the background at a volume that if you wanted to listen to it you would really have to concentrate - its supposed to be something about refocusing the brain rather than lying there listening to your head saying 'I cant sleep'.
I usually just do the same think with the tv but if the light bothers you a radio is probably better |

Doesn't have to be depression to get insomnia, I suffer from bi-polar 2.
I get it when I go through hypo-maniac attack (that's actually a lesser form of mania, you feel elevated but you're in control of yourself), it actually feels great, full of energy, you feel you don't need sleep. But eventually you hit the wall, then you go the other way, not full blown depression, you still get up and go to work but you don't want to all you want to do is sleep, lethargic not interested in anything. |

Not everybody needs 8 hours sleep - I've never slept for more than 5 hours and I function well enough
I have had problems even getting my "5" though, and apart from serious drugs, the following has worked for me - warm milk before bed, reading in bed until I doze off (nothing too exciting) and my little gadget that makes soothing sounds - rainfall, thunder, white noise etc. And NEVER look at the alarm clock when you're trying to get to sleep - turn it around and you won't keep looking at it and raising your tension levels. |

Oh I know I don't need 8 hours sleep. When I do get 8ish hours I wake up more tired then when I was trying to get to sleep.. My problem is trying to get to sleep at a reasonable time. I don't have an alarm clock. I do like the sound of a ticking clock. Maybe I'll have to try putting a battery in my clock and seeing if the ticking can help make me sleep easier.. |

Most prob a downfall but was a few tiny strawberries n one peach. It's actually making me eyes feel heavy. Most prob not the best thing I could have done. Just a habit with working till 9 every night I get in at 10 have a snack and then settle down for the night. Bad habits are hard to quit |

There are a few of us like that on here I have found part of the issue is stressing over not sleeping and putting it out of your mind is a real bitch.
Sometimes logging on here helps I have also found a walk in the evening helps with fresh air and avoid coffee and tea evenings. The main thing though is the more you think about it the more it bugs you so its distraction I find works best. |

Tea is worse than coffee for keeping you up why I have no idea but it is if I have one at 10 its 2am before I sleep. try playing through a road trip in your head while its dark or playing music low till you drop off its just getting the right distraction that works for you. Good luck I hope you find it. |

Some tips for relaxation... create an evening ritual that lets your body know that you're winding down i.e. have a bath, make yourself a nice cup of herbal tea, a foot bath, or whatever helps you unwind.
Have you tried any yoga nidra? This is where you lie down, relaxed, and take the focus of your mind around your body going from toe to toe, up the legs, up the torso, down the arms, and to each finger. Wherever your attention goes you're supposed to breathe into that part of your body and observe any tension that might be there... making sure to relax it and let it go. Yoga nidra usually sends me off even if I do it in the middle of the day lol
Finally, if you're anything like me, you might respond to some relaxing sounds. Get a CD of lovely wave sounds gently breaking on a pebble beach... it reminds your body of a slow breathing rhythm and can aid letting the mind go. Also some great old ambient music like the super chilled side of Steve Hillage's Rainbow Dome Musick can work wonders as it trickles all over you and fills your mind with audio stimulus, helping you to let go of whatever your mind was thinking of.
Sometimes... even with all this... I'm still too mentally excited to sleep. I usually just requeue the music, lay back and enjoy it in the knowledge that, sooner or later, my body will crash... I will need sleep. If it goes on too long and you loose too many nights sleep... you may need drugs or those herbal pills you can get from boots. Good luck |

Some rather nice tips. I always like to act out a fantasy in my head. Just lately it's been two or three different ones that's I find myself adding bits to during the day.
I will have to look into the yoga ones as it's been suggested a few times. So must work right?? |

If you do suffer from this, its important you recognise the signs, its not a big deal in fact it can be of benefit. A sure sign you've got it is racing thoughts, doesn't have to be weird ones, just can't switch off.
One big tip I will give you, don't do anything in bed except have sex or sleep, don't even read. In fact don't even read in the bedroom. The reason for this is you must associate this place solely for sleeping.
If you can't sleep, get up and go do something until you feel sleepy, then go back. |

That is the focus on breathing, something you can control. Think in, out ... Block all other thoughts.
Its not something I tired, works for me, whatever, its medical science .. Look for the book on Mindfulness ... They figured out how teach the mind ... |
