"TORIES AT IT AGAIN more spending cuts since the second world war more jobs to go and DLA CUTS NOW what next ?"
Well a lot of stuff was going to have to go since the country is £155 billion pounds in debt.....
in all of the manifesto they were all going to cut something... and when the Independant "Institute of Fiscal Studies" did there report yes they did say they would be the biggest cuts since WW2...
However before you make it a party political issue... it also said that the labour and lib dem cuts would have also have been the biggest since the 70's....
whoever "won" the election were always going to have to put up taxes, and were always going to have to cut spending, it was a fact of life when you spend way beyond your means....... |

yes there are going to be some MASSIVE changes
VAT going up PENTION AGE going up etc etc etc
and when we had those debates with the 3 party leaders talking hour after hour after hour .......... not one of them mentioned sod all about it
i knew that would happen and thats why i dont vote
i dont have to sit here now perplexed wondering what manifesto it was in that said the pention age was going up |

well they are going to be ambitious and try to turn around most of the debt in the next 5 years...... which would have been 10-15 year under labour......
quicker turnaround means bigger cuts....
so let me as the OP a question.....
rather than just a soundbite... what would YOU actually cut... or raise tax on, to bring down the debt..... |

well when ya live in spain most of the year maybe you are as involved or as affected as the rest of us....
look, lets gets facts right!! the pension age was always going to go up whoever won.....
lets not say it wasn't.... it was a labour policy before the election and none of the parties said it was going to reverse that.. it is more a case of what the age was going up to
and when you get a country like germany who's pension age is 68 having to bail out greece whos pension at the time was 52 you can see lots of problem where that is money you are paying out, and income you are not getting in....
VAT is an easy thing to put up because even at 17.5% is was still charged at a lesser rate than most of the rest of europe where it is charged at 20-25%..... |

Interesting how everyone quotes the IFS and points out they are independent. However I believe that if you check the history it was formed to oppose the Wilson (Labour) government in the mid 60's and that it has consistently campaigned for right wing fiscal policies. I believe has never yet supported a single non Tory economic policy however I may be wrong in this, but its right wing pro Tory bias cannot be denied.
As for 40% or even 25% cuts, that is not what is going to happen. What will happen is that we are now being set up for another Tory "sell off", just this time its the tools of government that they intend to privatize!
Cameron IS Thatcher MkII and knowing that he less than 5 years to dispose of the tools of government where Thatcher had 11 years the assist stripping has to start soon and cant be as subtle as Thatcher was in the beginning. |

My god, you really do believe that pile of crap don't you? Cameron is trying his hardest to get this country back on an even keel after 13 very long wasteful years of Brown/Blair spending money they didn't have like it was going out of fashion. I think it's bordering on the criminal what those two bastards have done to this country; they opened our borders and allowed anyone who wanted to come here to settle in the UK no questions asked. I crime rates are up across the board and our NHS is creaking under the weight of foreigners piling in to get free health care that WE pay for. They should be prosecuted for they way they've defrauded the electorate and frittered away OUR money. A company exec that performed as badly as those two clowns would have gone to prison for it.
But then you don't vote and don't even live here, so what the fuck are you moaning about it for? |

in the run up to the election labour never ever mentioned the cuts that they would make if (god forbid!) they should ever get back into power!,but continued to criticise the cuts tories and libs were proposing knowing damn well the overspending that the labour gavernment had done and the big mess they had landed the country in. |

I live in Manchester!
I'd like to remind you, as your memory seems to be very poor, (or maybe its just selectively poor). I am the person who spent weeks before the election telling you that Cameron was just like Thatcher and in the same way as she told us how she was going to fix industry, he was saying the same about society! Now we get to see how he will do it, and we all get to live with the results of the stupidity of the likes of you (working class Tories [and theres a laugh in its self]) who swallowed all their crap and voted them in!
I will yet again point out to you that it was the US banking and finance industry that defrauded the whole world, NOT either Blair or Brown. Also that it was the last Tory government that deregulated the banking and finance industry in this country.
One final thing as you spout your Tory propaganda, how long do you think that your employer is going to continue to pay you for sitting at home doing nothing? And how are you going to manage on the new reduced benefits that are coming and 1 in 4+ of all those civil servants in Newcastle get the chop and are also chasing the few minimum wage jobs that there will be in Tyneside?
Hope your ready to move to Edinburgh. |

But it suits your politics to blame Blair and Brown.
Sounds about right for a Tory...
Remember the directors of Sheffield Forgemasters being prosecuted over the super-gun affair in 90...
Who was it said he "was being economical with the truth" when as a minister of the crown he LIED in court and had his daughter LIE so they could pervert justice to line their own pockets?
And just so that no one thinks I am jumping on something in 4/5 years time we are already being set up for the Tories to get themselves re elected on the "we brought the troops home" when they pull the troops out of Afghanistan in 4 years time. Shame is it will probably work just like the Falklands worked for Thatcher. |

You are living in the past pal. Working class? Don't make me laugh, there is no working class anymore. There's an underclass of scroungers, loafers and layabouts that Labour supporters believe is their grass roots support, and then there's the people who go out to work and earn a wage and contribute to society. That's it.
Are you hoenstly going to sit there and tell us that Blair/Brown did NOT instigate an open-door policy to this country to deliberately force us into multi-raciality at the expense of the British way of life? The sane among us saw what they were doing and voted them out because of it, but too late I fear.
"
I will yet again point out to you that it was the US banking and finance industry that defrauded the whole world, NOT either Blair or Brown.
"
Brown: I got us out of this recession. It was ME who resolved the banking crisis.
Those were his words. Sounds very egomaniacal to me. But, if what you say is true, how did Brown resolve an American banking crisis?
He admitted on national TV that he had the opportunity to reign in the carefree bankers and regulate them but he caved in under pressure them the City and didn't do it. HE ADMITTED THAT ON TV. Were you watching or does your TV only tune into Ch4?
"
One final thing as you spout your Tory propaganda, how long do you think that your employer is going to continue to pay you for sitting at home doing nothing? "
Spoke to my boss on Friday actually and he told me to sit tight and enjoy the Summer. Thanks for asking.
"

Siren works in the public sector and is unaffected by the coming public service cuts. We have a combined salary that takes above any lower limit for benefits so that doesn't apply to us either. Our child benefit goes into a fund for littleun to have when he's at Uni later in life as we don't need it to spend now.
"Hope your ready to move to Edinburgh. "
Siren's lived there for a while, lovely place by all accounts - never been myself though, we're off holidaying there later in the Summer to stay with friends. What is it you have against the Scots? As a Socialist, that's your spiritual home isn't it? |

I so love all the political debates on here, as if arguing about it on swingers site forum is going to change anything!
We are in the mess we are in now and the current government will say they will try and get us out of it, good luck to them, but if they fail then the next elected government will try again!
Getting all heated up about it won't change the fact that, whatever the reason, we are in a mess now and need to get it sorted out, so tough times ahead for us all!
As always, just my tuppence worth! |

And what do you think they will do if and when they save money and get this big dept down???
They will just give it away to the EU so that they can continue to tell our country what to do.
Also because of all of the migrant workers here claiming for children and families not even in this country nothing is ever going to change.
They live 10 to a house each paying a pittance and send the rest home to build a better future in thier own countries.
Most I have met have a 2 year plan to get as moch money as they can to set thier families up at home.
But whats the use of saying any of this as no one will ever stop it because our country is now too weak to stand up and say enough is enough. |

Don't you believe it. I sense that the tide is turning now. Cameron knows just how pissed off we are and if he fails to address the issue he knows he'll be out at the next election. I wouldn't trust either Labour or the Liberals on their own to sort out our migrant situation but it has GOT to be addressed. A cap on non-EU migrants is a start, but they need ot go further. I'd advocate expulsion for ANY non-Brit who commits a crime here. We cab't expel British criminals unfortunately, but we can expel those who abuse our hospitality. You kick someone out if they came to your home and trashed it wouldn't you? |

The tories have only been in 7 weeks, so how can this be their fault?
This is what happens when you combine a world-wide economic slump with years of labour spend spend spend politics.
The cuts are going to hurt most people, but I for one would prefer a fair bit of "belt tightening" now, with the likelyhood that it will help the economy, than having the "head in the sand" mentality od Brown and Co! |

why on earth are we still paying billions per year in aid to china or christ sake?,they have all our manufacturing industry so why are we subsidising them?. |

didnt take long for someone to blame the immigrants....
see when you lyin in a hospital dyin for an operation that cant be done because there are no staff moan then!
a friend of mines daughter applied to university for medicine, cant get in because its mostly PAYING students from abroad who being accepted.
another friend just finished her nursing degree cant get work in nhs is workin in private nursing home.
there be a lot more like this because the capitalist system is growing like a mushroom and will grow more under a tory regime money talks remember!
as bill clinton said the most important thing was the economy stupid!
there no doubt we in a big mess and have been for years and iv said before every government inherits the last mess and we been in a mess since ww2.
the point is when we make these cuts, who is goin to suffer the most?
as for no working class thats good old thatcherism at its best, right up there with no such thing as society! the class divide will always be there whether you want to admit it or not!
george osbourne could have saved a lot more by a full review of the benefits system startin with child benefit! why should tony blame get child benefit that 20 quid a wk or whatever over a year multiplied by the number of high earners could pay for a new school or hospital!
time will tell how this goes and i know what im hedgin my bets on......x |

So with this in mind would you like to explain why you are pointing a finger at Blair and Brown rather than at Cameron and Osbourn? |

I understood that the "40% cuts" were an "excercise" and not policy. Shame that the government are making these departments waste time and money doing something that may not happen. I also shudder to think how much the resulting redundancy and increased unemployment bill will be should 40% cuts go through. Going on how long a friend`s 30 year old son who really wanted to work was unemployed before he finally got a job cleaning out fridges for a large supermarket in his city, there won`t be much hope at all for the public employees made redundant to get employment in the private sector. |

Traditionally, the Liberals have been fairly forthcoming in terms of what they will do if they win power (tax hikes etc) but even they realised that if they actually said what level of cuts they'd have to make they would not have got s much of the vote that they did eventually receive. The electorate are like children and need to be led, they don't want to hear about cuts even though they know full well cuts have to be made. If one of the parties had said what cuts were neccessary and the other two said nothing the majority of the electorate would have voted for the other two hoping the cuts would be less severe. Cameron, Clegg & Brown all knew this, and that's why it would have been political suicide to come out and say what cuts they had planned before the election. |

However it was caused " I seem to remember it was a certain Mrs Thatcher and Mr Major and their Tory government that fixed our manufacturing industry and formed our "greed is good" service economy in the 80's and early 90's.
As for my being a die hard Labour supporter, that is not so. I am die hard ANTI-TORY!
I find it amazing how Tory government after Tory government going back over hundreds of years are involved in corruption in public office and subverting the justice system for their own gain while weakening our defenses internal and external, and yet they are still able to find enough stupid greedy people to swallow the same crap that they have pumped out for the last 200 years +. As for the open door for foreigners, I would point out to you that it was a Tory government that took us into the EU and a Tory that signed the Mastrict treaty (that passed power to Europe and opened the door).
As for the recession, considering that our economy is so unbalanced in favor of the banking and finance sectors it really amazed me that Brown was able to stop a total collapse and bring us through with relatively little pain, however Cameron's policies as revealed by Osbourn's budget and all his announcements so far are designed to cause maximum pain to all but the super rich (their the ones who OWN the Conservative party) and send us strait back into recession.
I just wonder how long it will be till these vultures bring back the workhouses and how they are going to peddle them round the country?
Also I would not be so quick to gloat about your security wishy, the Tories have said they want 50% cuts in departmental admin in government, and you can be sure that the majority of those jobs will go in low income traditionally Labour areas and that puts siren directly in the firing line. Unless she is the executioner, and if thats the case I'd not be drawing attention to myself if I were you, because there are going to be a lot of very angry people in your part of the world soon and not as many police to protect those that get the blame for carrying out this governments cuts. As for your boss telling you to enjoy the summer, how long is it since you last had work? I remember you telling us all how you had been laid off for 3 mths on full pay. I also remember how you have told us you are some sort of electrician (sky isn't it?) and earn between £15/20 an hour. Now pt on your thinking cap and put that fine analytical mind of yours to work...now how long do you think that you will be paid so much for enjoying the summer?
Do you still think you are so secure?

On that we will have to agree to disagree because this is going nowhere and i for one do not argue right from wrong
Everyone has their opinion
You yours and me mine
And in the great scheme of things neither are 100 % correct
And if anyone truly believes that their opinion is not open to question then its time to move on |

"yes there are going to be some MASSIVE changes
VAT going up PENTION AGE going up etc etc etc
and when we had those debates with the 3 party leaders talking hour after hour after hour .......... not one of them mentioned sod all about it
i knew that would happen and thats why i dont vote
i dont have to sit here now perplexed wondering what manifesto it was in that said the pention age was going up
well when ya live in spain most of the year maybe you are as involved or as affected as the rest of us....
look, lets gets facts right!! the pension age was always going to go up whoever won.....
lets not say it wasn't.... it was a labour policy before the election and none of the parties said it was going to reverse that.. it is more a case of what the age was going up to
and when you get a country like germany who's pension age is 68 having to bail out greece whos pension at the time was 52 you can see lots of problem where that is money you are paying out, and income you are not getting in....
VAT is an easy thing to put up because even at 17.5% is was still charged at a lesser rate than most of the rest of europe where it is charged at 20-25%..... "
i just thought i would make it clear for you as you seem to have the wrong idea about where we live
we live in luton but spend the summer season in spain
that means we pay taxes in the uk , and spend the money we earn in the uk
that includes spending money on council rates , water rates , car tax and insurance , plus all the other shit everybody else has to pay
so we are just as involved and affected as anybody else
you seem to imply that lets say a soldier who spends 6 months in afganistan they should not comment or get involved in political events in the uk |

I wasn't gloating. YOU raised the subject and I answered it.
" the Tories have said they want 50% cuts in departmental admin in government, and you can be sure that the majority of those jobs will go in low income traditionally Labour areas and that puts siren directly in the firing line."
Wrong again. She already knows her position is secure.
" Unless she is the executioner, and if thats the case I'd not be drawing attention to myself if I were you, because there are going to be a lot of very angry people in your part of the world soon and not as many police to protect those that get the blame for carrying out this governments cuts."
Are you suggesting that the UK is going to descend into violence & anarchy with those in employment hounded, harrangued and even assaulted by those out of work? You're living in an Orwellian mind of your own confusion pal.
" As for your boss telling you to enjoy the summer, how long is it since you last had work? I remember you telling us all how you had been laid off for 3 mths on full pay. The job I do is so specialist that I'm one of only 6 engineers in the UK trained to do it. That makes me a valuable commodity to my company. One they are happy to pay a retainer to so that I don't go elsewhere. Do you think I just sit here collecting a pay packet for nothing? I am in continual communcation with my employers and their clients making sure that the next level of installs is planned with efficiency and minimum of disruption. The only difference is I don't have to leave my house to do it.
~
You are coming across as a somewhat jealous person and one who thinks that anyone with a decent level of living should have it stripped from them and redistributed to the poor downtrodden masses. You are niave. It is the movers and the shakers of this world, the middle management workforce of this country that enable contracts to be planned and completed, thus providing jobs for the lower end of the scale. Without us, these projects cannot be completed as top level management wouldn't know a screw driver from a spark plug - but then they are not required to, their job is to secure the contracts.
This system is called commercialism and it's leading lights are called capitalists. Without them we are nothing more than a mass of clones supervised by the state and told what to do, wear, eat, watch, when to sleep, and when to work, when to fart and when to piss.
I prefer my dirty little capitalist ideals, over your unctuous version of Socialism any day, thank you very much. |

i love you lot!! the summer break from uni i thought would be boring with no political stuff to cheer me up and let me exercise my brain and here it is!!
here's a few of my predictions.
we are goin into a double dip recession.
the cuts are goin to be harsher after the budget.
benefits shall be slashed. incapacity has always been a bugbear of the tories and in a way i cant blame them there is illness then there is sheer laziness!! i can think of a few near me who could work but wont work and get everythin held to them from kids gettin transported to school , to every grant going! why should they be cradled!!
public sector is goin to feel it really hard dont disallusion yourself into thinking your job is safe its not. unions have started making plans already for strikes etc!
private sector, your gonna feel it too dont expect a wage rise or any perks, the time for the working man/woman has gone the only winners will be the shareholders and directors!
see it this way private services, wishy im using you as an example and no in a bad way just that you work for a big company who rely on people using their services, but if people cant afford these then there will be lay offs even for the more experienced etc. i know sky is very technologically advanced etc but these things have a short life before somethin else comes along, and younger more qualified people who they can pay less become more in demand.
a lot of businesses small and large will either go to the wall or really cut back. the future jobs fund is gone so there a good few million youths on the dole, our pool of talent is goin to shrink rapidly. xx |

nah few more wks should be fine!!!
see in all honesty, there are some cuts that do need to be made beuracratic waste is unreal! and we really have been taken by the hand too much with what we recieve and what we pay for it.
i just dont want us to end up back in the 80s and the unrest etc that came with it but i dont want the country down the tubes either and to be honest its not really looking good! i know i can support myself whatever the outcome, but there are many people who cant for good reason but on the flip side there are some who can but wont and who rely on the state to provide everything. my view will always be different to yours because i live in scotland and its a different way up here.
you can always bugger off back to spain when it gets too tough lol!! x |

Britain has about 8 million unemployed according to a recent report . The official figure, people not claming ,people that have gone into full time education because they cannot find employment ,those that have just given up !
Thatcher made mistakes but labour inherited a healthy economy by british standards and have managed to bring this country to its knees and Brown deserves no credit for his handling of our economy the mans a moron
Tell me if all our companies are going to suffer ,Which they are ! how are directors and share holders going to come out of this mess unscathed? Pain for all !!!!!!!!!
Get over thatcher It was 18 years ago !

i cant find the exact number of unemployed because of the hidden unemployed that you mention but i would hazard a guess at a bit above that you mention!
a lot of companies are goin to suffer both here and globally you just need to look at the stockmarket and growth predictions to see that and that before we take into account the impact on cuts to local authority spending that will also impact on the private sector as it will be the cheapest that will have the tenders that will be put out so obviously that will have a knock on effect on wages etc for the workers and also on stakeholders etc i didnt say they were goin to be unscathed all together but the top of the tree wont suffer as much as the lower branches will!
il get over thatcher when you get over her glories it works both ways xx |

Generally, I'd agree with you on that but in my case it's a little different in so much as the work I do is for companies investing in their network for the next decade. The equipment already out there has a finite lifespan before it becomes obsolete and/or uneconomical to repair. Couple that with spare parts getting fewer and fewer on older and older equipment and it's not difficult to see that, recession or not, this equipment has to be replaced and it's a backwards move to replace it with similar stuff - the budget for this year was agreed last year, and next year's equipment requirements has already been determined. It takes upto 3 months lead time to oder and acquire new equipment from the manufacturing company in Switzerland and they have to pay for it when it's delivered.
In the normal ebb and flow of the telecommunications world, ie. homeowners tightening their belts during a recession, sure, there will be a fall off in consumer demand and, unfortunately, it's the network engineers who will feel that pinch. My job is diferent from theirs and it's impervious to consumer cutbacks.
But, nothing is set in stone I guess and a double dip recession may well have an effect on me too. Let's hope @Osbourne has got it right and a d/dip doesn't happen - the growing crisis in the Eurozone is probably the only thing that could set it off and we've got limited exposure to that, thank god. |

its great to have a civilised discussion about it!
technology is a wonderful thing and who would have thought ten years ago how accesible it was and how far it would come on!
the eurozone is worryin i dont know much about it but for some countries its not lookin good and i hope we dont go the same way!
the financial world confuses me even with a pass in an economics exam! im more a grass roots person but the banks really need to be reigned in a bit! they not lending is havin a bad affect on everythin from potential homeowners to businesses but still payin massive bonuses out to higher grade employees in my eyes is just wrong!
here the housebuilding trade is still not movin nor are houses for sale and even i can see we need that market moving or we up the creek x |

I've found that things tend to sort themselves out one way or another if people don't meddle with them too much. We all knew that house prices were unsustainable at their old levels so this readjustment period is a shot in the arm for those who were struggling to get on the housing ladder and it makes perfect sense for them to hold back a little longer to get the best deal for them, plus they can save for a bit longer thus reducing the amount they need to borrow. It's not good news for sellers or builders but then they didn't mind getting the high prices 5 years ago so it's swings and roundabouts.
As an economic student you'll be familiar with this:
Nothing can perpetually rise and nothing can perpetually fall.
The nature of economics is it's cyclical way of turning. Up then down, then up then down. If you look back 200 years you'll see a pattern of boom and bust every 20 years or so, with a major crash every 60 years and full on depression every 100 years. It's also easy to understand why this happens:
Traders who haven't experienced a bust will not know what it feels like to be cleaned out and are more likely to take huge risks, those are the depression traders, like now. Those same people will not take thoat amount of risk again but they will take some risks, they are bust traders. New recuits to the trading world are carefree and eager to to do well, those are boom traders. You see? |

the fact they tradin with some other mugs money makes it all the more vile!
the cycle of boom and bust has always been the same, but the difference now is the global market and more legislation etc!
100% mortgages were a bad idea to me but also the easy access to credit was the devils work! we are a greedy society we want it now now now and we want the best and on a lower scale income thats where the problems start! why does brighthouse sponsor neighbours? most of the people watchin tv at that time are unemployed (no offence to the unemployed btw!) they see ohh i can get a big tv from them in easy payments blah blah that big tv gonna cost 3 times more than if u saved for it! not to mention if u fall behind on payments the big scary guys at the door!
some of this mess has been caused by our own greed!
as u said no one was complainin when housing prices were sky high and even buyin an ex la house was minimum over 100.000 but now we payin the price! x |
