The children have a birthday fast approaching and trying to find the right present for them is not easy. However, my sister has got the best present ever for one of them.
It made me think about birthday and Christmas presents as a child.
What was your best and/or most memorable?

I remember coming downstairs on Christmas Day to find I had a blackboard - didn't have a clue I was getting it and I was totally made up, the happiest I've ever been getting a present
These days it's Xboxes and iPhones at 4 years old, the magic isn't the same |

My bike. It started a whole new phase of childhood. My brother and I went all over the place on our bikes. I still think the wind in your face as you zoom down a hill is one of the best feelings ever. |

I remember one gift at christmas
And thou I loved going course fishing With
My dad this gift I remember was a small cardboard box with fish printed on it
And Inside were tiny cardboard cut out
Fish with small magnets on the mouth part I,d spend hours trying to fish them out with a small rod and line with magnet attached we advanced from that
Into the 1970,s with headache or kerplunk, monopoly, and scrabble. |

Best prezzie EVER was waking up at the age of 5 in the middle of the night to hear a whimpering....walked in to mum and dads bedroom to find a Westie puppy mum told me to go back to bed and pretend i didn't know as he was a present from my dad who wanted to give him to me |

My best present was 2 action men. I had an English commando type and a German. My dad told me that I always had to have the English action man facing the German otherwise the german would stab him in the back. when I grew out of them, I made them both balsa wood coffins and buried them. |

xmas was always a rupert annual, tube of smarties, colouring book and five felt pens (pack of ten was rare), i was a n only child and we used to get a new family board game off santa each year, didnt get much more than that,maybe a jigsaw to keep me quiet, one year though i got a tape recorder with a plug in microphone, think my grandma chipped in to pay for it , there was a note on it to press play, which i did and mum dad and gran had recorded a message, all i can remember is her saying ' you are such a lucky girl' - and back then i was - |

i remember getting a second hand shopper bike one birthday and like others have said - we had our freedom with them - most of us had them and used to go all over the place in the school holidays, dump them in the park with a bag of butties , bottle of made up cordial , house keys and possibly 50p for an ice cream all in a bag on the handle, nobody would even touch them and we would go off for a couple of hours to play and come back - they pull kids off bikes now and run off with them - sad times |

It is such a lovely and special memory.
We didn't have much and I really understand that getting five felt pens and never 10. We got the cut out paper doll/clothes book two years running for Christmas.

It is such a lovely and special memory.

mine was a phillips, used to stand the mike in front of the radio of a sunday to record the charts - had to be silent haha |

Buzz lightyear action figure which I've still got sat on the wardrobe, could never throw it away
Or a big jake. I must of been 4 or 5 a sit n ride dumper truck that was huge (up to a 4 year old anyway) used to take about 16 hours to charge the battery |

Steelies were metal possibly ball bearings - I lived near a steel works so I assume a lot of kids got them from their dads. |

My best two were given me the same year when my Dad was on a three day week so we didn't have much money.
A dolls cot made by my Mum & Dad. Dad made the metal frame and Mum got the material and did all the sewing to make it look like the princess style bed you see on Disney Films.
That same year my Dad made me a set of table skittles, did all the woodwork and metal work himself.
I still have both and would never part with them. |

Asking for a record playing for Christmas and expecting to get one of those box ones , I got a real stereo with 2 speakers burst into tears and said that's not what I wanted. I had to explain it was so much more than I ever expected. |

I just remember the word jacks but can,t remember what they looked like we had some the size of gob stoppers like a pot type pale lilac in colour with a sort of marble effect
factory made and steelies to but nothing
Beat the original one,s I could hit them In one chuck surprised myself sometimes

I had loads of surprises at Xmas, we always git what we wanted and more, I asked for a keyboard one year and woke up the a full size one not the little one I expected, a racer bike, and the best of all, I got a tape to tape with radio and TV built into a geto blaster and to this say I have never seen another one |

A doll called tickles she's in the loft but will be brought down soon. A beautiful handmade dolls house my uncle did all the electric lighting. I still have it with the late 70's wallpaper and carpets.

Never forget when i got an X-wing and some STAR WARS figures with it, brill, and getting my 1st BMX bike was special, but i think my favourite was when i got a Sega Megadrive with 3 or 4 different games. |

Best ever was a prezzie called ' sonic ear '. It was huge. You pointed it at people at a distance and could hear their convo through headphones. Mum didnt think it was that good of a present after a while |

A sindy doll, with long hair. Has a key on her back that when turned, shortens her hair... Knee length white boots, red pvc mini skirt n matching top... Still got that doll... With other old toys in the attic... Aww memories!
We didnt have much , but appreciated what we had.... My Dad made many toys too as he was good at carpentry ... Such simple times! |

I remember getting a Play Doh Barber shop one year.. played with it for hours on the living room floor. Watching the blue doh coming out of the heads as I turned the crank handle.
Also used to adore fuzzy felts and got a new one every time I was good at the dentist. There was a huge three storey toy shop across the road, it was a magical place |

Fuzzy Felt we had that and so many hours spent sticking the felt into different pictures. |

I was out with my former sister-in-law a few months back and she mentioned a book her late son got for Xmas many years ago called "How to hold a crocodile" which had loads of stuff for kids to try out (kind of a "Boy's own" book)...I told her I bought it for him and she said she still had it in the bookshelf. I was touched a pressie I'd bought more than 20 years ago was still fondly remembered |

A proper old fashioned dolls house when I was little. I'd climbed into my parents bed Christmas Eve and they managed to place it at the foot of the bed in the night without waking me up, it was so magical when I woke up and saw it there! !

I had a beautiful Cinderella marionette. She had real blonde hair and a stunning blue and silver dress. I got all the strings knotted together and decided to cut them resulting in her just falling apart. I was so upset. I know that she cost my mom a fortune back in 1976,! |

My best ever Xmas present as a child was my first ever keyboard. I was about 12 and I got this tiny little Casio keyboard as a stocking filler. You could have taken everything else back to the shops, I never put that little keyboard down. I can now play a load of different instruments and have played in bands for 25 years or more..... Thanks mum |

For my best childhood present was my peugeot racing bike, it was black with chrome 3/4 rear triangle and tips of the forks. I was 6 and still remember it, I went everywhere on that thing. It started my love of cycling. |

I can't pick one favourite but what I lobed was the way my.parents would surprise us.
On year I desperately wanted a white Raleigh racer bike for Christmas. We woke up and opened all of our presents but no bike for me  I was practicing my best I'm disappointed but not going to show it face when my dad kept asking me to get him a bottle of from behind the sofa....off I went and BOOM there was the bike!!
My grandparents used to buy us a big present each year for all of us,climbing frame/swings etc and my dad would stay up til late on Christmas eve putting it up in the dark so we could see it as soon as the curtains were open!
So I guess memories are the best present I've ever had x |
