I was thinking the other day..... Ouch!
If Scotland go it alone where will they get their intelligence from re terrorists? Will it be an open border between us and Scotland? It could be an open gateway for anyone to come in the country! |

These are made public to reassure people and make them aware. So when they are travelling they might see more of a police presence and to keep people vigilant.
Nothing to be worried about. |

If... Some one was gonna do something... Whatever that may be... Would they not randomly do it when all are not on alert to them doing it? ie when people NOT expecting it?
In which case we should all be vigilant of what going on arond us all the time? Just a thought |

Wonder what Hermann Goering would say about all this?
"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece?
Naturally the common people don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood.
But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.
Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
Something like that, probably. |

My husband and son missed being blown up on a train by minutes. If there was a warning beforehand could anything have been done? Would we have been stopping every suspicious looking Asian man with a back pack and demanding he show us the contents? Maybe the police would have but I wouldn't |

So was I. I was staying in a hotel in Kensington on business. it was a worrying time.
I pray that this is juat vigilance and noone is going to be harmed in another terrorist tragedy |

Please people. I like so many commute to and work in London. Yes we need to keep our eyes open. But we need to live too or they win anyway. Remember we are protected by some of the best people in the world and for every hit we incur there has been many attacks foiled in the planning. At the end of the day we could just as easily get hit by a bus x

It's just scare mongering i think to be honest and it's just making everyone paranoid.
If they have intelligence of an imminent attack or individuals planning to carry out certain attacks. They should just deal with it there and then.
That's what the main thing is. He authorities can't just wait for something happen. Why not nip it in the bud?
Anyway, at least i get more seats to myself on the trains. Does get a bit lonely when i'm the only bugger in the carriage and everyone else is in the corner or the next one lol.

All it means is that there has been increased 'chatter' about an attack.
Possible attacks are foiled every day without many of them getting in the news.
The threat of an attack hangs over us everyday, people just don't think about it until a politician decides to mention it.
The reality there are those that will seek to attack the UK/US/the majority of european countries.
The UK had it years ago with the IRA, its just a different group now.
It isn't good living under the spectre of a potential terrorist incident, but as a previous poster has said, if you thought about the risks involved in a number of things, you'd never leave the house.
Terrorist attacks are a said reality, thats not to say we shouldn't be concerned, but i do take issue with way the government approaches them in what can often just be scaremongering.
perhaps if they actually addressed the cause of such attacks and dealt with the issues internationally rather than political rhetoric things may be a little easier.
Im sorry, rant over |

Now that the threat level is raised to the point where politicians believe someone may want to do something I can at last relax, it's good to know that everyone else is now being vigilant. After all nobody takes any notice when the threat is merely substantial!

The daft part is Cameron has said that there is no specific intelligence about a specific attack. So, scaremongering as usual.
What he means is, we fucked up in Iraq and in Syria, consequently ISIS/IS have been allowed to take hold, who we know hate us, and are likely to try and attack us at some point.
So, we'd like to scare you.
or
We have fucked up in Iraq and Syria and at some point we are going to have to bomb them so by raising the threat level and scaring people, we may get a bit more public support when we bomb them.
(if we hadn't helped to install that lunatic Maliki in Iraq and actually done something about Assad at the time, we may not be in this position)
again, sorry about the rant |

As others have said, attacks are foiled all the time, they just don't broadcast it. They don't give specific details of a threat so that-
a) people aren't only vigilant about one specific type of threat- they need to be aware of anything/ everything out of the ordinary.
b) the terrorists aren't alerted to the fact it is THEM in particular that are being watched.
It is likely to be something they can't track reliably yet have a high level of confidence that something will happen. Millions of eyes watching (the public) is better than hundreds of eyes watching (police agencies) for any issues.
Anyone that thinks the government/ crime agencies don't know what is going on... you're clueless. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I was here on 7/7. I was also here during the 70s and 80s.
London has always been a potential attack point and being vigilant is a normal state of affairs. We're watching out for pickpockets, trip hazards, suspicious people and many other things.
7/7 was a shock because so many people were affected (and I know two of them) but the threat from the IRA in the 70s and 80s felt more dangerous to me. Maybe because I was younger and less cynical then.
I've just travelled through London by bus, tube and on foot and we're just getting on with the business of living.

The announcement, as others have mentioned, often aids in policing because people are more vigilant. It also is thought by some to act as a deterrant to an attack, i.e. 'oh, everyone's watching now so we can't do it'. The threat levels, the announcements of the situation, the vigilance of the public, the normal operations of security forces and police.... all are tools that the state uses. It's also partially propaganda that the government is watching, aware, and addressing the threats. |

I'll be in London this weekend - I won't be concerned that my risk of death is higher than it was last time I was there. What's the point of living in fear of things you can neither control nor influence. If I sound flippant I don't mean too, I have a friend that was on one of the tubes on 7/7, he was fine, but a different carriage and a very different story. The liklihood of being in a terror attack is so small, I'll not worry about it. Living in a state of fear means that terrorism wins.
That said the cynic in me thinks that these announcements are not always linked to intelligence. They too often coincide with bad news needing burying. Or in this case perhaps conveniently timed to put the fear up those pesky 'yes' voting Scots who will need our government and army to defend them.

I was more "nervous" when the IRA were active. I honestly don't see the boogie man on every street corner or worry about terror threats: I refuse to live my life in fear! |

Do we really have much confidence in Britain's security services, hundreds of Iraqis' Iranians, Afghans are gathered at Calais on a daily basis and many get into the country, and this is only one route, the government report we have 1000;s of illegals in this country and they don't know where they are or the activities they are doing, but it's been that way for a very long time, personally I'm not to worried if it happens it does whether I worry or not |

We eere out in florida the xmas following 9/1. We were in disneyland on a monorail taking us into epcott i think. Unsurprisingly disneyland was very quiet and luckily we didnt have to queue for rides.
There was a few people in the carriage with us along with an American family. Now the dad had arms like arnie but he was hyper he was walking up and down the carriage looking at every passenger in turn trying to find a terrorist. Not much luck for him as it was december and the majority were pale white europeans.
The guys wife said to her hubby oh john will you relax and sit down and then john junior piped up dont worry mom if theres a terrorist on this train dad will get him.
We were all smiling at one another over this but the sad thing is making statements like the one released does cause this type of behaviour |

Maybe if this country got its head out of America's arse, we wouldn't have these threats.
IF there is a threat then either
a) There is gonna be a big bang in London again
or
b) The police will find them first. |

Photos are fake & photoshopped. He didn't really convert to Islam in April. One of his parents is not really a Muslim & never has been. He didn't really copy the IS videos. It never happened. No ones mother/grandmother has been brutally murdered. Forget I ever mentioned it. I forgot there was more truth in the Beano or in a DC comic than in a news paper. Never fear, Iron Man & The Avengers will keep us safe. I forgot we all live in peace & harmony with good will to all men. |

"So......
Now a Muslim has beheaded an 82 year old grandmother in her back garden, in Edmonton, North London.....
Is it still scaremongering???
He was a coward for attacking a pensioner in the 1st place, but he is not the only one who lives here that wants to hurt us.
Some people need to wake up from thinking we are safe on our little island & no one can hurt us.
Has there been anything reported about his religion?

The murderer may have been muslim but is that the motive of the murder ? He was shouting about cats and he had decapitated a cat. He was obviously a madman. It may turn out it was he thought he was on a mission but I don't think it's an Islamist policy to rid Britain of pensioners and cats. |

If we all hide in the corner, never venturing out due to fear, have these people then not acheived their goals? I for one will live my life , in London and carry on ... Regardless of the shit some papers sprout to sell papers. |

What a load of bollocks. You see how BBC News posted the news on their website?
Using the word beheaded and then pictures of a couple of muslim women standing. Now. You tell me. Are they not putting ideas in people's head?
..and to be honest. From this site i've lost the patience to just sit back and hear people chat shit (not directed to anyone). But, recently all my messages have been aimed at me - i got people messaging me, blaming me for what's happened in Rotherham, all the crap with Isis and a few other things.
If it wasn't for all this brain washing. I'd be seen on the same wavelength as the rest. Now, you can say what you want about me - but, i thought i'd share what's been happening lately.

And then they ask why is there a threat of terrorism. The mind boggles.
Don't they realise all they're doing is instilling hatred in those who are feeling victimised. Especially the young ones. They're all thinking the media hates them and everyone is out to get them. Not realising it's just a way for them to sell their stories and make money - it's not like the young ones are going to understand the politics behind all this.

The reality? Today, tomorrow, next week, anywhere anytime , a terrorist attack can occur, from all sorts of groups,
I could hire a white van, fill it with 2 tons of rubble and drive it into a on coming train, killing a dozen people injuring many more, maybe lose two men doing it, cost? Less than 300 pounds
Terrorism is easy to do, its a miracle that more haven't occurred, and shows how well are anti terror guys are (I hope to join),
On the middle east, its not imperialism , its simple need, america in particular who leads the wests alliance needs oil to run, iraq has lots of easy to get cheap oil, and the money invested in getting it is in the trillions, america will go to war with the whole middle east to guarantee its own energy security, hopefully we won't drag ourselves in with them, besides I think we should take greenland and iceland, have the whole north atlantic to ourselves. Its not like the danes can refuse us!!! Modern nations have huge needs oil is just one but is essential |

Most people are missing the point I was trying to get across & taken out of context by taking more understanding from the sarcy comments & not from what I was saying.
Any comments I made on this thread the other day & today were for the people that said upping the terror threat was just scaremongering & we shouldn't really take any notice. I never said or even implied we should hide away & never come out. That was others' sarcastic comments that mentioned that. To take a threat / warning seriously does not mean you have to run & hide. Just being vigilant like others have said, & keeping an eye out for suspicious people & packages, keeping in mind that anything can happen anywhere, that IS taking it seriously. My idea of someone NOT taking any threat seriously is someone that says it's all bullshit scaremongering & passing it off as the ramblings of an idiot. Only the naive think nothing can or will ever happen to them. I bet the poor people who died on 7/7 never thought anything would happen to them. People have short memories & forget we live in a sick world with some god damn evil sick people.
Who on here can say for definite that there are no extremist nutters in their town ready to kill like the despicable pair who killed poor Lee Rigby. No one can.
Being vigilant & taking it seriously is someone who, when out, notices a glimpse of shiny blade or handle just poking out of someone's pocket or coat or noticing a tiny glimpse of a wire poking from someone's bag or over hearing people talking about harming someone & calling the authorities. Someone who doesn't take it seriously is the person who doesn't notice anything because they are blind from their own thoughts of being safe until they hear a huge bang or hear someone has been killed by a TV news flash. By which time, it's too late. There have been members of the public that have noticed things over the last few years & stopped terrorist atrocities. They took it seriously & saved peoples lives.
Am I really that bad for hating to see innocent peoples' lives wasted by homegrown madmen who have publicly threatened us on social media. So sorry for being passionate & caring about life. Maybe I should be cold hearted & carefree like some others on here & jump on the "Bullshit Wagon" saying it's all a conspiracy by the establishment to oppress, intimidate & frighten the masses. |

What about Africa then? When did they ever play at being "World Police" to deserve the atrocities being commited today by Boko Haram Muslims & when did they play at "World Police" to deserve a few Hundred school girls kidnapped & terrorised? |

There's a lot of chaos and a lot of bad people out there, personally I think we should restore order no matter the cost, on paper if killing 1 out of 10 people got you that order you would do it without a second thought, however in practise that's a lot of dead people, freedom can only be enjoyed in an ordered environment, but people will disagree, the beauty being they can in the uk, elsewhere in the world they can't |

Huffington post are reporting that The Sun are being widely condemned for it's 'deliberately inflammatory' front page.
Scotland Yard are still stressing that there is no terrorist link.
The suspect's name is in the public domain and is not islamic
All witness reports in all papers other tgan The Sun suggest that this was an indiscriminate attack likely by a man in a highly disturbed/deranged state of mindset
The Sun have a proven track record of fabricating stories to the point of fiction

Pops, I am sorry to hear this but not entirely surprised.
The story, when I heard it this morning, about Palmira Silva didn't make me think about radical Muslims. I thought about a poor woman in the wrong place at the wrong time when someone with severe mental health problems went mad with a knife. He apparently killed a cat before killing her. Now, I am sure someone will find a way of telling me that cats are anti-Islamic but put the two things together and this is not about terrorists.
I think there was a grandmother beheaded in China by her grandson last year. I'm fairly certain that Muslim extremists weren't involved there either.
It's a horrible thing that has happened but jumping to alarmist headlines helps no one.
