The whole system here baffles me a bit. I went to high school and university in Oklahoma and got a degree in something called "liberal arts" which is fairly useless. The world is changing and while I think learning is good, I can't help but think the whole learning via institution thing needs an overhaul. ~Sea

I hated school, and hated college even more when I was doing my apprenticeship. Couldn't wait to leave, in hindsight, BIG mistake.

Since then I've taught myself a lot of things and got various certificates along the way to help me in my career.

The best advice I could give to any youngster is, make the most of your education, and stay away from men in dirty raincoats

I dropped out of uni after 2 years. Hated it with a passion and hated being broke. Now I think uni is a waste of time for most people (obvious exceptions are the professions: medicine, law etc) what's the point in starting your working life with massive student debts and a degree in nothing useful. Research shows that students starting uni this year are likely to be stuck with student debt into their 50s and many will never be able to fully pay it off.

Most people I know are in jobs to which their degree subject has no relevance anyway...

I've recently gone back to college to take some more courses and gain some additional qualifications. I'm reasonably well educated anyway, but I guess it never hurts to learn a little more and improve yourself does it?

Some of the college courses are very cheap, some training I've even found for free.

No high school passes , dropped out of college , did a 4 year apprentice ship now run a successful business and trained up to 6 apprentices !! Did that we'll and was asked if I could come in to college and teach the kids

Couldn't do that as I didn't have the qualifications

To answer I am super intelligent, very quick to learn and super fucking lazy aswell (when younger) recently took test on computer knowledge to grade and put me into correct class and felt stupid lol.... Put into advanced

I left school at fourteen and was in full time employment at fifteen. After climbing the ladder at London underground I embarked on the knowledge which took just over three years.

Mrs P has a good selection of O and A levels , went to Uni and got her degree and about ten years ago went back and got a work based qualification which has helped her a lot.

Haha for the record that's true and yes I am laughing at my own expense!

I still earn more money than most my mates at school and am currently setting up my second business. It's not all about qualifications but I do advise youngsters to work hard at school and do the best they can with there education. There's easier ways of earning the money I make and a added benefit is looking at all the hot women all day instead of sweaty men.

Messed about at school and only got a couple of CSE's (yes, that long ago!)

Put myself through uni in my mid thirties which I could pay for without incurring any debt and now in the middle of a Masters.

Absolutely love learning, but in terms of my current job hunt, it appears I'm over qualified. Go figure!

Got a degree in computer science back in the 80's more abacus design than computer but have taken and passed many courses since then 90% of which are now also in defunct systems.

Learned the true value of happiness and have attained it a few times. Now I am learning how to get old disgracefully

BA Hons in Humanities (Eng Lit as major)

Then got a job . That was 21 years ago. Lots of in service training since then.

By the way this debt thing is an ideological thing! Even the government call it a graduate tax sometimes! Income tax plus 10% loan takes the tax to about the same level it was before they stopped grants but to put a tax on education is ridiculous

Stuck in at school but needed to work extra hard at Uni to keep up as I'm not that bright - got good degree and passed my professional exams . All through hard slog . Watched a lot breeze through with very little studying and lots of drinking . Worth it in the long run I was more tortoise than hare .

Lol! Perhaps not an accredited undergraduate, however there are people with doctorates specifically centered around the life of one individual.

To obtain such a thing with myself as the subject, however, would be an incredibly time consuming project.

Theres a lot more to education than exam results Some of the most educated people we know have hardly any certified proof, and some of the doziest twonks weve ever known are degreed up to the eyeballs and havent got a clue about reality.

Both just cse here but a tradesman/small business owner and an academy manager....you can have as many letters after your name and super duper qualifications and still be thick as a castle wall...mind you my spelling is attrocious ..lol

I have just completed a full-time honours degree (Ancient History and Archaeology) and now looking forward to doing a Masters in Cultural Archaeology.

Something I've wanted to do for over 30 years! I've also have a keen interest in learning and have done several various community college course along the way too.

I only received average marks at school because I never received any help with my Dyslexia and that it wasn't accepted. Was told by the career's councillor not to aspire above a college education.

Even though someone may not do well at school, doesn't mean that they're not intelligent and I always commend people who help themselves. Whether it's furthering their education or not.

I then got a nvq level 2 in housekeeping.

I am not the sharpest tool in the box by any means, I didn't take a blind bit of notice at school, always in the bottom classes, with the girls at the back talking non stop, how I passed any exams I will never know!

Spent three years at college doing a plumbing apprenticeship.

Left college and abandoned plumbing to go into the brewing industry.

Passed an NVQ in brewing proficiency this year.

One of the Best decisions I've made

Working there gives us plenty of financial freedom and allows us to do what we want and get a foot on the property ladder.

People say money doesn't make you happy, well it's certainly helped for us

having money in the bank doesn't make me happy, but using it to do things we enjoy certainly does

Agreed, also when I started mine I thought it was going to be tough, but nope....

Really simple and with modern tech it's pretty easy on time!!

But I fucking hate assignments, I love exams, I'm a sleep all day, then wake me up for the 10 minutes where I have to do my job, kind of guy....

So exams play right into my hands, slogging it out on a load of rubbish that I already know is worthless really grinds on me!!

It is funny how many people equate education with training...

My parents paid for my quite expensive education. It taught me many things, like where things were and the order of when things happened (geography, history other academic stuff).

It also taught me that countries and scientific truths change, and that it does not matter how obscure knowledge is providing you understand how the DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification [system]) works and can read, digest and understand what you are looking at no knowledge is beyond anyone.

I was also taught that you can train anyone to do anything given enough time, and that brighter someone was the faster they could be trained. And that formal exams were there to sort people out in order of speed that they could absorb given amounts of information, and then regurgitate it in a limited period in order to choose those best suited to advanced training. But that training no matter how high the standard should not be confused with education. Because education is not about what you know, but knowing how to find and interpreter information, and the ability to think, spot patterns and accurately extrapolate answers or conclusions.

I am not that well trained (A level first year poly drop-out) but I do think I had a better than average education.

Agreed with this too, one of my best friends owns several businesses, mostly in construction and engineering.

He has an NVQ I think?

But he's highly intelligent, can do maths so quickly in his head and has a great eye for opportunities.

He always says most of the time you can read a book and figure out how to do most anything.

& in the main he's right.... I basically make a living doing exactly that!

Got all certificates that could possibly be given to a student. Professorship is an honour not a product of being a "good student" in the literl sense of the word. It is based on evaluation. That, I don't have yet.

At the end, what puts food on your table is ability to put it all into practice not accumulation of knowledge or certificates.

My advice to younger person is a quote attributed to Francis Bacon: study first and get the certificates, the good jobs will surely come. This is only useful if you are looking to get entrapped in the work cycle. Entrepreneurs do not fit this plot. The jump the queue to what the college or uni education targets to achieve. Translating the knowledge into what puts food on your table.

Don't worry about the work, tablet, laptop, phone... Figure out an organising system, download all the books you need, copy n paste note from one to the other....

nah im quite happy where i am now.

pays well, for a stress free job where I work 4 days a week, got better job security than is available anywhere else (currently a 9 year back log of work and its going up not down) and a final salary pension.

if i do the degree ill probably stay with the company just move off the tools to office engineering but i think that would be crap tbh.

what does interest me is a new set of teams they've set up fully equipped with rapid prototyping equipment, 3d printers etc (including a titanium one) and they have short cycle projects ie 3 months to find a solution develop it and test it and get it ready to be handed to manufacturing engineers to enable it for mass production.

that does sound fun if more pressure, (and less easy money)
