How cheeky have people become! Just in town and I walked past one who asked me if I had any money I said sorry I don't carry cash and carried on! .. He yelled at the top of his voice, 'you Fucking prick ill bang ya' I just carried on.
Not only do I generally feel awkward already by not giving money he then shouts that!!!
It's unfortunate I know and it can happen to anyone but jeeeeeeez! |

I never carry cash unless Im heading to the tattoo shop but there is one particular one that is by the tattoo shop I always cross over to burger king and get him a burger (the king of the day) before I go in as feel bad for not having change  |

I've bought food for them numerous times its a nice feeling isn't it, why would they have dogs fgs! Honestly I could of gone back and stomped on his head but I know he is down big time on luck so I let it go lol I'd hate to be in that position. But I wouldn't abuse the public!

A big issue seller once shouted at me outside Glasgow central for not buying one! He shouted how do you sleep at night .
I almost cried as I had no money to give to him even if I wanted to. I was skint and going through a bad patch myself . Bampot |

I brought a tramp Mcdonalds and he looked at me gone out and said how am I meant to buy beer with that!!!! He was last seen trying to sell it to people in a queue for a nightclub.
I hate walking past them when they have dogs. It's a blatant ploy but gets me every time. |

Totally, did you know it's not uncommon for tramps to share a dog amount 4 or 5 people, the dog gets passed around wile the tramps go and sleep in a real bed and eat. The poor dog lives it's full life on the street  |

when i was living on the streets a few years ago i found that not all that beg are living on the streets and the ones that are rude probley are not as a rule its hard to tell the one that are on the streets and ones that just beg for a living as they can make a lot of money from it if they get the right pitch |

I refuse to give them money as the majority tend to spend it on drugs and alcohol. A Birmingham homeless charity reported recently that some of them get upwards of £400 per week!!! Wish I earnt that amount tax free each week  |

Some years ago I was in a pub, this chap came in he looked very cold after a chat i noticed he had nothing much on under his Boilersuit,I gave him my overcoat only to notice someone else walking out wearing it, he had sold it in the tap room. |

I have never had a bad experience from a homeless person in this country. Most are very respectful and civil but sadly down on their luck.
Yes I'm sure there are a small minority of conmen, but I choose not to tar them all with the same brush in order to in some way protect my conscience.
It's tragic that one of the richest countries in the world fails such a large group of it's citizens. |

im all for helping some one out on the streets as in charity work or donate to a homeless charity even just talking to some one homeless on a coffee morning can make a diference it help me to get my feet back on the ground just giving them cash on the street wont help them |

I work as a volunteer for Crisis ...I'm always chocked by the stories ....a breakdown can make you become vulnerable ...I'm humble, I can't give money to all the homeless ...but I surely can speak to them ...or just give them a smile , most of the time , they want that  |

I give direct debit to a homeless teens charity, none of my kids have ever been in that situation but there for the grace of God.
I usually give to my big issue seller at the local Co-Op or pass on a sandwich and a bottle of juice and he is always happy to accept it, he carries shopping to cars for his "regulars" and gives everyone a card at Christmas time.  |

Anyone would be an addict with the s**t some go through.
I don't give money. I buy food and hot drinks. I give to two homeless charities and have worked for one of them in the past. These people are just like you and me. Some have made bad choices in life, some are victims of circumstances. But no one deserves a life like that. |

I kid you not, when I worked as a courrier, I was sat waiting in a Tesco car park in an area I went to all the time and spotted some of the regular "homeless" guys turn up in a BMW. They got out of the car in normal clothes, (one wearing a suit!) went into Tesco, came out in rags and old clothing, put their bags in the boot of the car and fucked off to the High St to beg.
I must've sat there with my mouth open for about 10mins... |

Saying you don't carry any cash is a little unbelievable as most do he probably thought you were taking the piss if you has said sorry no change he might have accepted that more as the truth. |

Depending on how I feel sometimes when asked if I have any spare money I say yes thanks plenty and smile
Also when I was in Peru beggars would approach me and hold there hand out and I would hold my hand out back at them and ask them for money! |

He shouldn't have been rude to you. Maybe he was having a bad day, maybe something else had gone wrong for him today. Maybe he had not taken his meds if needed them or he was in need of a fix. Yes maybe he was just a rude man, but I am just always thankful that that is not my life!
I always think, one different choice, path whatever you want to call it in life and that could be any one of us. Having known someone who had a house, job - the world at her feet. Lost her job, got into arrears and just couldn't get another job, ended up in bed and breakfast - so to all intents and purposes homeless although not begging on the street. Met a drug addict in the B & B who got her onto heroin, she had nothing else left and he listened to her when she felt no-one else was. She died not long after from an overdose in her 40's.
I am not surprised those on the streets (genuine street homeless) end up on drugs and alcohol. Many have mental health issues, PTSD or have had a breakdown. It's a vicious circle. They won't always engage with the agencies, but it's not a lost cause and some do escape that life and I am glad they get given that chance. |

We have a local Big Issue guy. He is always polite. I never buy the mag, because of its Socialist _iewpoint. But, I do give the guy £2 and tell him to keep the mag to sell to someone else. |

its not a life i would choose, some choose that life and others have it put upon by circumstances beyond their control. We are all different some people can deal with issues and other cannot thats just life.
My hat goes off to the people who work in soup kitchens every night, they see the real story.
Personally i see the biggest contrast between the haves and have nots when i am working in london, its not a nice thing to see people sleeping rough on the streets whilst people walk by them wearing expensive clothing coming out of a expensive resturant were the cheapest cover is £70, then the contrast is shocking.
What, who and when i give monies or gifts to others is a matter between me and my own conceince.
All the fake or professional beggars are doing is giving the genuine human beings who need our help a bad name.
All i hope is that the same misfortune or bad luck does not shine its light on me or my family and friends.

Maybe that's why he can't hold down a job or use his social wisely.

I remember years ago when i lived in notts there was this young girl wasn't much older than a child, id have put her at 16 at the oldest sat outside the train station with a hungry and homeless card, people wouldn't even look at her, they just ignored the fact she was there, she asked me as i passed if i had any change, i honestly didn't so had to say no, as i was answering she put her finger into the hand of my daughter who was about 6 month, i had her in one of those carrying slings you put on your chest and she said to me, you have a beautiful baby with a really sad smile on her face, it really touched me and i went to the nearest shop and got her some sandwiches and snacks and a drink and took it back to her, she was so greatful i thought she was going to cry, she said i had been the only person in two days that had even acknowledged she was there
i remember walking away and wondering what kind of a life she had had at home that made he choose the streets at such a young age rather than going home
i think people should put themselves in others peoples shoes before they judge them |

I used to see a homeless guy in Brum and often helped him out. One day he approached me and I said I had no money, he said it was fine but someone had given him a packet of fags and he wondered if I wanted any as it was the only way he was ever likely to be able to repay me. I was really moved by it.

I've worked with homeless people for the last couple of years and it is a difficult situation, most of my clients beg, if you give them money, 'some' will definitely buy drugs and alcohol, if they don't get money that way they'll be out committing crime. Which would you rather? |

i once took a homeless guy back to my house let him have a hot bath a warm meal gave him £20.00 and off he went again he was no trouble at all.... id be lieing if i said i wasnt scared whilst he was in my house i believe everyone deserves a chance..... i just feel so sorry for the homeless.... you never no if it will happen to ourselfs one day! |

There for the grace of God go ANY of us! The mental health problems of those poor unfortunate souls who genuinely find themselves homeless and cast out from society...is widely documented.....and so it is not quite as black and white as some in this thread like to portray.
Of course it is never nice to be sworn at...but their circumstances, social and psychological state is often not a stable one for obvious reasons.
I can only imagine how truly awful it must be to be homeless...to be alone, frightened and rejected by society.
What would my own behaviour be like after years of abuse and neglect???? I hope that someone would show compassion and not judge me for the result of my own misfortune.
Unless you have walked in their shoes, you cannot judge.

We never give to people begging on the street as we know most of them in the truro area have homes to go to and get money from the dole. They just get pissed up and try to steal more alcohol from the shop I, the woman, used to manage on my own in the centre late at night. Got fed up with with being attacked/verbally abused trying to stop them and the police doing nothing. If we give money, its to a charity then I know people who really need it will get it. |

I'm working in Southampton at the moment and everytime I go into town it seems I'm asked for money.
There's loads of them, men and women, but I'm sure they can't all be homeless. Some look too well dressed and groomed.
The last time I was accosted I was told I should die because I chose to ignore them. I told her to go and fuck herself.
It's a good job I'm a big ugly fucker that I feel threatened but I can see why some people would feel intimidated by them.

I think that's often the key knowing who are the local regulars. I know a guy who lives on the streets where I grew up and has done since I was a teenager and he's still around now and very well known locally but I also know he has a very wealthy family who have spent many years trying to get him off the streets but he chooses not to. |

Something similar happened to me... he asked for some change for a cup of coffee, I actually bought him a coffee... he went mad because I hadn't given him any money.

I guess you have to experience it to really understand how demoralising and mentally draining and physically demanding rough sleeping can be.....I hope some of you never ever have to experience it....I've worked with rough sleepers for 10 years and they are human beings not tramps they are people like you and me...they are not animals and not any less worthy of your time. |

Oh and I've slept rough for a couple of months...I was told to fuck off and made fun of by members of society so the shoe can be on the other foot... |

I get your point completely, just think people take everything so serious and don't ever stop to think that people are just having a laugh.
Surprising how many inbox messages I get about the forums from people that are to worried to have a different opinion or laugh on the forum because there worried, personally I am hard faced bastard and don't loose any sleep disagreeing and laughing at others or my own expense. |

During a year out before University I spent a couple of evenings a week helping out in a Liverpool Inner City soup kitchen. Some of the stories were quite heartbreaking.

Ok I take this topic kinda of serious as it's my bread and butter and I've personally gone through it...I can laugh at my own misfortune but don't really laugh at others...as it's their journey not mine...I laugh at myself all the time..like I said we are all different and that what's makes us the way we are..it's ok to have different opinions about things but people will also put their point across...in life we learn to agree to disagree |

If I became homeless I would get a tent, befriend a dog and move to the country with my friend Mark (who is a ninja) together we would live off the land, killing fish and bears. I certainly wouldn't move to a smelly city and sit on a pavement with my dog sat on me. Crazy. |

It's very unfortunate some people are playing begging for all its worth.
Homelessness is pretty much a root cause of many of society's other ill. It makes it much harder to keep families together, to find work, to avoid illnesses like TB and so on. |

The only thing I once did was buy a bag of chips for a homeless guy a few times, his marriage went sour and got kicked out of the family home. He lost his job as well. I saw him one day watching a young girl of about 10, it was his daughter he showed me pictures of her. He said he didn't want her to see him as he is ashamed of himself, every week I bought him a bag of two till sadly I moved away from the area. |

This is an interesting thread , seeing different people's opinions etc....
The majority seem to feel it's unfortunate fior those who end up on the streets .
Which of course , it is in most cases .
So we do what our conscience tells us to do , in some cases we give a bit , and others nothing .
And when we give food or coffee , it's often taken begrudgingly , because they can't buy booze with it . A good reason not to give . But that's all that makes so many of them happy ! We have our homes , family ,swinging , holidays etc..... They just have booze and drugs for their happiness .
So if you are going to give them anything , give them what they want , it may seem wrong to you , but to them it's all they have

Homeless charities advise people not to give money to the homeless...sometimes they don't want anything from anyone but simply just to see a friendly face and often a chat as many don't speak to anyone for days. |

Whenever i am getting rid of clothes etc, i always take them to my local homeless charity centre, its a great place that gives people a place to shower, have hot meals, look for work/housing etc and most of all a safe warm dry place to go, where people can talk and be treated like HUMAN beings, instead of being ignored or looked upon like scum.
All i can say to the people who are so negative and up their own arse with their own self importance, is i hope karma doesnt catch up with you and leave you in a situation of total loss. I was always brought up to treat people with respect and to help those less fortunate than myself, seems these lessons have been missed on a few people here. |

I cooked Christmas dinner at a hostel for teens last year. Lucky for them they all got invited home for dinner!! But at least the staff got a good nosh up! |
