Sheffield, is it worth a visit?

We're planning on a long weekend away and usually go to York this time of the year.

Never even stopped off in Sheffield, but it's a big city, or a least it used to be, so there must be something worth seeing.

So, who knows Sheffield and what's there to look at?

Not thinking about swinging or anything connected with swinging.

We're into real ale pubs, or other interesting places to spend a few hours

There's the peace gardens to visit. They're nice.

Nightlife's pretty diverse too. Lots of places to go

Sheffield

There are some good real ale pubs (the fat cat) some good restaurants with a range of different cuisines. The theatres are great and there's always a choice because there are three stages (crucible, lyceum and the studio). We're right on the edge of the Peak District which is beautiful. Don't forget the huge shopping centre (meadowhall).

And there's a very central hotel which offers spa breaks at reasonable rates if booked early (mercure st pauls).

Sheffield is the fifth largest city in the country but feels much more intimate and friendly. It's also a very green city with lots of parks. We have two universities so there's a youthful feel in the city.

Plenty in Derby and they're closer together than they are in Sheffield.

Less travelling = More drinking

We've booked to go to York again.

First weekend in October. Planning to have a day out in Whitby and possibly we'll fit in a visit to Scarborough too

You've already booked, but here's something on Sheffield anyhow.
