I didn't know about this till just now - the article I viewed had snipets in which I did not feel comfortable in reading so did not read the full article.
Personally i don't think I would have put this in the public domain - but if the family have then it is their right
Its a crazy word and doesn't look like getting better soon - very sad indeed |

"Well I was going to say that the letter is in main stream news so it's hard not to have a look. Yeah I am with you with the manipulation thing."
I felt the same way when the first Malaysian airliner went missing, people hysterical with grief were beamed into people's homes in a very close approximation to a form of entertainment. I think we need to be very careful of becoming a society that expects to be witness to other people's nightmares. |

"I agree with Evie. That letter is personal to his family although I assume that they have authorised its publication.
We also have to be quite careful of being manipulated.
"
Not sure what you mean by being manipulated? |

You feel a certain amount of sympathy for a bloke who has just had his head cut off, so why would seeing the letter make any difference. oh and the fact that he had been held against his will for two years. |

the letter was a private letter to his loved ones. why do we need to know every detail of someone we had no concept of a month ago? its sad that the family felt the need to release this information. i dont know why they did it. |

yes the family did authorise its release... in a way I can see where it would give a little bit of comfort to the other families of people that are held captive.....
and the other thing was the letter was memorised by another person who was being released so he could pass it on as they were not allowed pen and paper..... |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
The bit on the news that the video now appears to be staged, albeit Foley is dead, seems to have had less coverage.
I haven't read the letter. It is too soon, as everything seems to be now in our instant society.
His family must be in pain and I can only imagine the sort of pressure they are under to give up parts of their grief and their son to tell a story that ius current.

As for the letter if it helps his family , if indeed they released the letter , then so be it

I think I'm becoming a bit of a coward when it comes to things like this. I'm finding (possibly with age) that other people's grief has a significant effect on me now. I'm able to identify with those people and the emotion stays with me for longer than I care.
I'm sure that the saddest of news would have had little impact on me a few years ago. But now I try to avoid those invasive reports, too upsetting. |

that's quite an odd statement. Of course everyone is glad its not their loved one, surely it goes without saying. ad it should go without saying. "
No but its the first thing that I think when I hear of something like that happening. |

So everytime someone dies, the first thing you think of that it is not your family.
Do you have anytime for fun? |

I don't think having children is relevant. I don't have children but i can still appreciate that this is a horrific thing to go through. That being said my first thought is not of my lived ones, it's to parents of the deceased, having to re live the moment they are told of theor loved one dying is such a horrible way every time the watch the news, read a paper, use the Internet etc.
You don't care less just because you don't have kids. |

Maybe odd to some but a perfectly natural thought for others. I haven't watched the video nor read any news items myself so I'm not going to comment on the political debate or whether the family are correct in releasing the letter. A man has gone through torture and a viscous beheading from what I've learned. My words on here won't make that not to have happened,or make a difference to his family. Thinking about what he must have gone through brings a pain to my chest and tears to my eyes. If it were my son I don't know how I would cope |

Which is your absolute right. Discussion tends to evolve and move forward in a way that the person who initiates it doesn't expect but I think thats good, it makes you think and realise that there is always more than one way of looking at things. |

And upset for the family and other Familys Involved, the people behind this
Atrocity will think that their message
As got across to the world well it has
Createing Indignation and hatred to these perpetrators they have no real answer but to use terror and violence as
Their tool for communicateing with terrorists are real evil itself and their doctrine spreads like a cancer
While ever there are people like this
On the planet you won,t stop such acts
From happening thats the real problem
peace talks would be useless with them
their lives must be terrible from a
Outsiders view point narrow minded,
Bigoted and brain washed and fanatical
With It, they have achieved nothing and never do they never see this so they carry on hateing the world and what it
Stands for what utter pointless lives
They lead. |

It is odd in here sometimes
If the family want to release a letter they had and you do or don't want to read it I don't see the problem.....but I don't see how anyone can blame the media for doing what the family wanted.

I can't see the problem in the family releasing their sons words to them. I doubt whether the media forced them at gunpoint to speak to them. The only choice we have in the matter is whether we read it or not.
Perhaps, and again only summising here, the family wanted to prove to the world what type of man their son was, rather than his last words going down in history as being the words denouncing America, as forced upon him by his captors |

People have a fascination with the macabre.
Where there is tragedy people will watch. If there's a car accident we look, if anyone has been unfortunate to live near a house where a murder has taken place, then groups of people will form outside, matching police do their job etc. Similarly with ambulance and fire crews.
If its gone viral people will look, it doesn't make them crazy people just inquisitive, regardless sometimes of the extreme content. |

The above is very different to knowing that someone is about to be beheaded, virtually live - but I still take your point! |

Anyone that can have such strong views, as this incident evokes, manipulated by a news story isn't that strong willed in the first place. We all believe what we believe and one news story isn't going to manipulate us. Without seeing every apsect of this story we miss so much. |

Believe it or not, I never thought they would show the whole thing, you know like when they stop filming at the crucial moment? Perhaps I didn't read the reports on it first closely enough. Gruesome wasn't the word and I can't start to understand or ever know how his poor parents will cope with the knowledge that not only did their beloved son die and how he died, but the whole world (well a large percentage) saw it happen. |
