Cheap tattoos aren't good and good tattoos aren't cheap!!
Dont go by price, go by outcome. Look at previous work, either pics or personal viewings lol
I paid £60 per hour for my lady and she is amazing even if I do say so myself! |

I always say if you can walk into a shop and they can do you that day leave, if they are not busy there's a reason for that anyone decent will have a wait but if you want a good job the wait is worth it, i paid £75 a hour for mine, you can get cheaper though i think most places charge about £50 per hour, though if your just having something that will be done in one go they usually price the tattoo not by the hour |

The best tattoo parlours dont have pages and pages of rubbish designs on the walls they only do custom designs and every piece they do is unique because of that. I pay £70 an hour. |

The girl I use is normally booked up six months in advance if you want a full day, three to four if you want three hours.
No designs on the wall. A few tat mags to browse on the coffee table.
If you can't google your chosen artist, see their work on good websites and in magazines and they don't do either exhibitions/trade fairs or guest spots in good shops at home and abroad - I wouldn't use them.

^ that
Custom work is what you want nothing out of a book.
Most if my arm was done by stencil transfer, the underneath drawn straight on with a sharpie and some straight free hand with the tattoo machine.
Any decent artist will discuss what you want and take time to get it right and make sure your happy with it. |

I paid for a full day booked in October of last yr and the earliest I could get in was April this year.
Booked for my next session the day I had it done and couldn't get in until November.
I would say always check out your artist and his\ her work check what others think.
A really good artist will have a waiting list. |

My tattooist only does custom work, has a waiting list of around 6 months and is £300 per day. Not sure about her hourly rate but she's definitely worth the wait. |

Expect to pay between £60 to £80 per hour. And like others have said if you can walk in and they can to it straight away walk. A good tattooist will be booked up for months

"My leg tattoo cost I think £120 and I was in the chair for less than an hour, so yes I suppose it does depend on whereabouts in the country you are "
A lot of artists who have set pieces on the wall charge a set price for them then get them done as fast as possible to make the most money in a day. Custom artists only charge by the hour as they dont know how long a piece will take. Its another reason to go custom not wall design. |

My artist generally charges £80 an hour. I've been going to him for 5 years now, and he charges me a lot less. He doesn't do flash work, only custom pieces.
Don't just rely on price or others work either, find an artist you are comfortable with, it makes getting work done a whole lot more fun if you get on with your artist. |

Depends what you want? No good artist comes cheap.
There are tattooists who tattoo from transfer..
And then there are tattoo artists who will put a design together for you. Most important thing..
Do your HOMEWORK.. Bad ink is notoriously expensive and painful to remove. Easier to cover depending on age... Perhaps avoid red? A lot are allergic to it. Some are better at say... Lettering.. Some are better at portraits.. Some black n grey.. Some flowers the list is endless. I have designed for my local artist in the past.. Feel free to message...

Most of the tattooists around here charge £50ph, good tattooists will be honest with you about their weakness's and even advise you to go elsewhere.
I must say though even good tattooists will have books of work to choose from and pics of their work on the walls. |

Saved me typing that lol
I wanted Japanese style work on my right arm and the artist I usually use told me it's not his style and he didn't want to do it, he recommend a studio specialising in Japanese style work instead.
A tattoo artists reputation is their license to work and a good one will want to keep that |

This!
I paid £70 an hour and mine will take 5 hours over 3 sittings. If my tattooist was in London, I'm sure that would add £20 an hour to the cost.

Anything from £20.oo to £80/100.oo per hour. Forget getting a tattoo on price, it's for life and although a cliche' will haunt you if you go too cheap as quality costs. Go with the best quality artist you can afford after seeing their work on people not just pics!!
I'd say if you spent around £50/70 ph you would pretty much gurantee you were with a decent artist as they don't last long over charging for bad quality work but make a living churning out crap at low prices. Research.. Good luck. |

Research your chosen artist - good ones will have at least Instagram pages. Research you studio, and finally make sure of your design - in my opinion, avoid text. A phrase or peom may have meaning today, but that's likely to change come tomorrow.
If you're looking for realism, check out Meehow at No Regrets in Cheltenham, and don't be afraid to travel - this is a peice of art, and one that'll go with you to the grave. |

Far too fashionable to be cool atm.
When someone needs to indentify themselves by their ability to pay someone to draw on them or grow facial hair - I'm fucking out.
So many decent looking young ladies covered in big, thick, black tattoos just to be cool while they are en vogue is a little bit sickening.
Enjoy sheeple. |

£70 an hour at ours - i think if you have a return visit and larger tattoo they reduce - muy daughter has a few and got a great deal when she had one from her mid-back continued over her lower back and hip on one side - she then had a moon on her arm - last minute decision and didnt charge her extra - so extra good |

I am about to have my first tattoo, using a local artist, who was reccomemned, when I first went to see her she asked me to go away and write down the reasons why I wanted one and look for samples of what I wanted, then she would design it for me, I was very impressed with her |

I actually agree with some of your post tbh
Don't find it 'sickening' for obvious reasons (we both have lots of tats)
There is definitely a trend at the mo.... It goes in phases... A few years ago it was shit tribal stuff (most tat artists seem to hate doing it)
Neck tats seem 'trendy' at the mo
We only have stuff we have designed ourselves and couldn't give a flying fuck about what's 'on trend'
Each to their own though and at least the trendies will have an interesting story to tell....
Oh, as I'm old, when I was at Uni Adam an them Ants were popular.... One guy had a huge version of their logo done on his arm with the text too (ant music for sex people iirc).... Oooooops

£20 an hour?! Sorry but on what planet?! And I don't agree paying £70 per hour guarantees a good tattoo.
OP maybe try getting recommendations from friends with tats. I only go to one woman now and recommend her when asked (which is annoying as she now has a waiting list longer than my arm) and she charges a lot (£100 p/h) but she's worth every penny. |

Fair enough and tbh I thought that too
'There is no art work I wound like forever'... Used to say that quite a bit to friends back then....
Then had my first one, loved it, thought 'it's actually no big deal' and now have quite a lot.
Don't regret any of them..... It IS addictive though.
After a while they just 'become you' and you don't notice them.
My gf has tons (two sleeves etc)... I don't notice them now tbh
Although I think tats on women are hot and you just know they are filth as they are more outgoing etc lol
Although isn't there a saying re 'the quiet ones' lol

Yeah, I probably am a bit sheep-like in the way you've described, but I don't really care! I think what gets my goat is people who go on about theirs as if they make them something special and unique (I know not every person with a tattoo does this) but actually they've copied it off David beckham or someone they saw out in town and can't actually tell you anything about what it means to them. There's a kind of inverse snobbery from a multitude of women I know who would deride chavs for all dressing the same but do exactly that with a half sleeve, a victory roll hair do and a halter neck dress. |

Me and my sub heading for tattooes next week
Advice one if you walk into shop and it's got loads if flash and they can ink you there and then AVOID
2 a good tattooist will discuss your design with you offering advice
3 placement on your body is important x
4 from initial inquiry it's taken 3 weeks for me to get 2 hours of studio time x
Finally if you get to the Northwest the Saz family around Warrington have a very good reputation for quality and will price by the design too! |
