I recently had a tattoo of a feather with song lyrics inside it.
The feather is a symbol of a love one that has passed away and the lyrics of my dads favourite song.
Had it done in memory of my dad.
Whats yours and whats is the meaning behind it? |

My tattoos don't mean anything at all. Neither will the ones I'll get later this year.
Miami Ink and the like has brought this thinking into normal tattoos.
What's happened to getting a tattoo just because you want it?
Maybe it's just me. |

I do agree with this. My other tattoos have zero meaning and people are often shocked that I got them because I like the concept of it.
I hate the "tattoo must have a meaning" behind it philosophy. |

I have a tattoo, peacock feathers and cherry blossom.
The feathers symbolise creativity, spiritual evaluation and rebirth and the cherry blossom's short life cycle represents life after illness, making the most of each day.
The whole thing is very personal and meaningful to me |

Not Just me then.
It shouldn't have to have a meaning.
I'm getting a comic character on my arm. There's no real reason other than I love the character. That's it. |

The ones I have now have no real meaning but my next one will be two balloons being released with the words "sometimes you have to let go" written in the string. In the balloons I shall have mum and dad. In memory of my beautiful parents. Xx |

I have one on my lower back that has no meaning, just loved it and wanted it lol.
I've had 2 stars on my inner wrist to represent my twins, my world.
Planning my next one but debating having it on my bikini line, has anyone had one here and how's the pain ? x |

I got my last tattoo done on my 40th birthday at NY Ink. I knew that I wanted words but had no idea what sort of design. I researched artists before I went and chose Luke Wessman. I gave him my little list of words, he took one look at me and went away to draw. I couldn't have wished for better.
My words are: 'Live laugh love explore dream discover' and they're written on the inside of my wrist in Latin. I love it. It's upside down according to the man behind the counter in the shop, which is pretty spectacular, but I wanted it the right way round for me. It was very definitely not cheap but you're only 40 once and Mr Wessman was utterly delicious. Worth every penny.
My only regret is that I didn't ask him if he fancied a shag! |

One of mine is a female butterfly candy skull . I had it done in memory of my Mum who passed away on All Souls Day which is the day the candy skulls are presented. That's what started me looking at them. I tweaked it, to include her birth sign which happens to also be the initial of her Christian Name.
So lots of thought behind it, I love it though.
I love ink, whether it's personal or not. |

Got a Japanese proverb inside bicep, translated means "fall seven times stand up eight"......A constant reminder to never let anything keep me down.....dust yourself off and keep on going!
Also have my kids handprints......wherever I am in the world their hands are on my shoulder x |

My tattoos don't necessarily have meaning, but they tend to have a reason. Except my sleeve, that's just because I like movies.
My grandad taught me about tattoos, as an ex navy man he had loads, he refused a skin graft because they couldn't move the tattoo from his thigh whole.
On the whole I have art done because I like it, although I was told recently that I have obvious mental issues and I use tattoos as an acceptable form of self harm! |

My wife and I have chameleons. Mines on my bum. To remind us forever of what we've got up to in chams. Mine has a pink branch to signify bi.
My flowers and butterflies are just because they are bright and pretty although someone pointed out that butterflies signify a transformation..
I guess that had an accidental meaning |

"I have a heart with angel wings and a letter in it in memory as I was widowed "
I have this as well but in memory of my mum and brother who passed away and just had a Phoenix on my back as new beginnings as my daughter leaves to go to college and my sister has heart surgery next week which will hopefully be the start of a new life for her |

Love the idea of the handprints. May have to go in the attic and look my daughters out now. Mmm thinking one on each shoulder blade. As if dhe is hugging me. Nice idea as she lives away now |

I have a half sleeve, and an inner arm design... Hummingbirds and lillies.. Hummingbirds symbolise enjoyment of life... My youngests name, is incorporated in it... I have stars on my wrist one for each child. Yet to add another... I also have a womans face in my sleeve.. Wearing a butterfly mask... Because I liked it...
The usual tramp stamp a bambi on my right shoulder blade I hate and want covering...
And flowers and butterflies.. On the top of my foot.
I have designed one for my thigh.. Yet to have done.
Addictive are they not! |

A skeleton playing the drums with Slipknot lyrics wrapped in a spiders web
Latin quotes
Roses in memory of grandparents
Writing across my stomach
All have personal meanings.
Don't see the point in tattoos for the sake of them looking nice |

My tats have meanings to them.
Well - 7 out of the 8 anyway.
Don't often get asked what they mean, don't really care if anyone likes them or not and don't feel the need to explain the rationale either - they're for me, most don't get seen much and they weren't done to be shown 24/7.
If people want one because they think it looks 'nice' then that's their prerogative - but I've met so many people who's tastes move on and regret the choices they made 'because their friends had one', 'it was fashionable at the time' - and especially those that have names of now long gone ex-partners.
Plenty of artists I know do as much cover up work as new ink.
Those whose ink means something personal to them rarely regret getting it done.

I (MR) love looking into the various meanings of tattoos from across the world, the number of fashion victims that have had stuff put on them without knowing the origional meanings of things can often be entertaining, iv got a full celtic dogs back piece that symbolises protection and loyalty, my kids names in script and an ongoing lower leg and foot sleeve of fighting cocks with a hidden pig in it which was an old sailor tradition because if a pig or a cockerel falls into water it will instantly get out |

It took me years to decide what I wanted design wise. The meanings had no reason for my choice and I only looked them because I seen this thread, I think every gets a tattoo because they like it but for some the meaning adds to there choice.
Just my two cents. |

I have a phoenix on my right shoulder which I got recently after a serious motorcycle accident left me needing several operations of which I'm still going through. I like to think it signifies rising up from the ashes to live again, rebirth if you like |

I'm getting a rooster and a pig on my feet next year. They will only be small, but they were my Grandads first tattoos. The old navy men believed that in a storm God saved the animals that couldn't swim first, so many of the men had roosters and pigs tattoo'd somewhere as a good luck charm. |

All my tattoos have meaning to me although some people might think them random. My favourite is probably the 3 lotus flowers on my foot. Lotus flowers represent coming through a struggle and the fact there are 3 is representative of me, my sister and my mum. |
