The blackberies are out. Mmmmm I love walking my dog so I also take a bag for picking them.
It's free and so good in a crumble with apples. Bring on Sunday dessert after a nice roast with warm custard. |

A family member makes sloe gin. I'm not a massive gin drinker but that shit is tasty!
Definitely a market for it, not really too sure why it isn't more popular. |

It always makes melaugh when you people picking them next to a busy road where all of the pollution from the vehicles is going to settle on them. OK I`m lucky in I live out in the sticks where the only thing falling on them will bee the dust from the grain harvesting. But I do think people could be more sensible where they pick their blackberrys! Although they`ve probably never even thought about it! |

I think you don't want them too ripe as you need to keep the pectin levels high. It's been a while since I made any though.

Damson vodka bloody rocks too! As for crab apples, treat them like a regular small apple. It depends on the variety as to what colour they go but if you cut one open check the pips - if they're dark and glossy and fully developed then the fruit's ripe. Texturally it should be soft fleshed with a crisp bite theough the skin like a Gala. |

My sister always used to make her own sloe gin, getting her sloes fromthe blackthorne bushes that grew on the dis-used Somerset and Dorset railway line. One year she couldn`t get any sloes and bought a bottle of Gordons Sloe gin and it was crap! Yes, it`s available, or was, but it`s as bold as dishwater! Home made rocks! |

500g slows, same of sugar, bottle of vodka or gin. I pick my sloes after a frost then prick them with a fork. Bung the whole lot in a big lambrini bottle. Shake daily. Ready after about 6 weeks |

buy a litre of gin,drink half,top up with same amount of sugar and berries,you have to prick each one,shake and wait while your hangover has gone.about 8 weeks but the longer you wait the better,im drinking vintage 2012 at the moment it packs a wallop |

I've already made my first batch of bramble jam, I'll be picking some more tomorrow for a batch of seedless jam.
Jez, wait till September and your crab apples will be ready. And they are high enough in pectin to use even when they're really yellow and ripe. Just make sure you chop the whole apple, seeds and skin and all for your pulp to make your jelly.
I boil them with a ccouple of scotch bonnet peppers then add chopped chillies and a little vinegar to the syrup and make chilli jelly. |
