How old were your kids when u left them home alone? Not for any length of time just to run to the corner shop to get milk?? Or leave them in bed in the morning to take ur other half to work (20 mins)?? |

When my eldest was 11 I think. My other two would have been 7 and 5. They were very good children. My grandchildren are 13,11 and 5. The 11 year old girl I would only leave with the youngest for 5 minutes max as she's not mature. I worry about fire or accidents |

It all depends on the maturity of the child. We have left my son while I was driven to work from around 8, however at that time our neighbour was a child minder and was up and knew that he was at home in bed. This was purely because I left home at 6:15.
Now he's 11 I leave him more often, I let him choose ie if I need to nip to the supermarket 5 mins away or yesterday when I went to walk in centre. However he knows our telephone numbers and his Nan's number off by heart. He knows not to answer door etc and we ring when we get to the destination and will ring a few times when we are there. We have never left him longer than 2 hrs.

I can't wait until my son is old enough to stay at home so I can go to the shops. There is always moaning when we have to go. I think 11 is about the right age |

My sons just turned 12 and will leave him at home to pop to the shop ect , wouldn't leave him for any length of time and wouldn't dream of leaving him with the 8 yr old , would probably only have one child on return lol |

Never having kids I cant comment.
But I can remember being about 13/14 looking after my sister and cooking tea for us, as our parents were working later than normal. |

i dont have any children but my parents left me to look after my younger sisters wen i was 6/7 as they worked all the time i was cooking roast dinners at that age for them too..... sad really because i feel i missed out on my child hood and had to grow up fast  |

I really cant remember, when i worked nights and my kids were little my ex used to get them up and bring them when he picked me up so i started walking home as i felt sorry for them but we wouldn't have left them alone while he came, i think they was about 12 ish when i started letting them go to the corner shop alone, if i went they just came with me when they was younger |

About 12 I think. It all depends on the child and their level of maturity. Popping out to the shops for 5 mins is fine by itself but you have to ask yourself would the child know what to do if you didn't return when you said you would? (accidents can and do happen). Would they know how to contact you? What would they do if they couldn't contact you? Would they know what to do if there was a fire? You know your child best. Small steps and lots of thought needs to go into it. |
