Could be an immobilized fault or more commonly the antenna inside the steering column. First trick to try is to lower and raise the steering wheel a few times to see if that has an effect. If that doesn't work you need to remove the trim around the wheel to find the antenna connector and check the connection. |

Another thing is to check your owners handbook. There may be a way of manually entering the imobilser code, sometimes it involves turning the key and pressing the brake pedal in a certain sequence/combination. |

ive extensively fiddled about with the steering column , took the trim under dash off and checked connections to electronic steering lock and gave it a dunt it case it was jammed .... yeah , read owners manual earlier and googled some merc forums and its looking like either a faulty key or maybe electronic switch / ignition barrel methinks ... hoping its just a new key ..... looks like its the stealership tomorrow ... thanks guy , im up for trying anything that's a possibility so cheers for the ideas |

yeah , the service resets and various changeable settings have odd sequences like that , but the key not turning in the electronic barrel prohibits any such footerings |

Have you tried disconnecting the battery negative lead and leaving it for 45mins to an hour? This may reset the ECU.
Depending on the model of the car a new key/imobiliser chip can cost upwards of £300 from a dealer. |

You'd be surprised what an ECU reset can do....Lol
It may even delete the previously learned parameters and give you back some performance and fuel economy. Many of us Alfa Romeo drivers do it when we buy a new (used) car so it adapts to our driving style rather than any previous owners. |

Let me know (here or pm) I'm always interested to know when and how things have been fixed.
Sorry I couldn't be more help too, it's always hard when the car isn't in front of me or there's no fault code to go on. |

Had a c class on my drive a few weeks ago for work, same problem, could of kicked myself when the owner came back and fixed it! The steering wheels were on full lock, shaking the steering and wiggleing the key was the answer ! |
