Hi everyone, as you all know people on this site take naughty photos of themselves and post them on fabs or email to potential meets. I am upgrading my laptop and want to know how you wipe all the photos on your laptop for good?
Any help would be appreciated. |

"How are you upgrading? Buying a new one or changing hard drives?
If your getting rid of your old laptop just destroy the hard disk."
Hello, thanks for the reply I am buying a new one.
How do I find the hard disk? |

"Or try http://www.piriform.com/docs/ccleaner/using-ccleaner/wiping-free-disk-space"
Thank you for your reply, I might be better off taking the sledge hammer to the laptop in hope I brake this hard disk as I clearly have no idea about computers |

Even if you delete they can still be retrieved as the information Is not removed just marked that it can be overwritten unless you fill your hard drive completely with less sensitive info you have no idea what remains, you can down load hard drive cleaners from the web or just smash the fook out of it lol |

Look on the bottom, there's usually a panel with a Hard disk symbol. Most modern laptops are upgradable so you should be able to whip it out.
Any computer I've rid us of has simply had the hard disk removed and smashed.

The hard drive is usually located underneath in a compartment , depends on model though, as said even if you wipe the drive the data can still be recovered.
If you can find the drive ( search google for model number and location of drive ) then remove it and use a large ish magnet and rub it all over the drive, that will ensure no data can be recovered.
Alternatively a sledge hammer will also do the trick lol |

download dban(dariks boot and nuke) burn it to a cd and boot off it and wipe your drive with it
should take a couple of hours and data is virtually unrecoverable as it fills every sector of the file allocation table. just look on youtube for dban tutorial and it will show you step by step what you need to do |

To properly destroy data on HDD, you need to destroy the disc inside. When ever you click to empty the recycle bin, it does not delete the data, but now let's other information to be written over it. As far as you are concerned, the data / photos are gone, but they haven't and can be looked at by a tech savvy person. As for smashing the HDD case... This one makes me chuckle as people think they have stopped the HDD being used. The internal disc is still perfectly fine. All you have done is dented the case & broke the IDE circuit board. If I found that smashed HDD, I would only have to take the screws out of the case & insert the disc into another case & plug it in. I now have access to what ever was on that HDD disc. Maybe run CHKDSK to repair some sectors. Then just run a little program to look at all the stuff someone thinks they deleted. |

Utter rubbish sorry, if you found a smashed hard drive you cannot just take the disc out and put it in another drive, firstly it has to be an identical make and model and secondly done in a clean room due to the fact the even the smallest particle on the platter will render it useless hence why drives are so well sealed. |

And you can get an "enclosure" to put the hard drive into and run it like an external storage device. Really easy to do! |

Yes, I know. Didn't it even cross your mind that if I knew that much already, maybe there's a good chance I knew the rest. But I only wanted to say the basics & not bore even more by going into even greater detail, but basically, you have to admit it is as easy as that for people that know what they are doing. |

Why don't you just remove the hard drive and retain it as a back up/ spare USB drive. That way you keep all your data to yourself.
Advertise the lap-top as needing a new harddrive.

No need to destroy anything. At the moment you have a usable, albeit possibly slowish, laptop with a hard disk contining data you would not want others to access.
The simplest solution would simply to be to take the hard disk out of the laptop and keep it somewhere safe, then you are free to do what you want with the laptop.
The hard disk itself is a 2.5 inch unit, meaning the the bit that spins inside it 2.5 inches in diameter. This means that the caseing for it is still relatively small so easy to store.
As others have said instructions for removing it should be available on the web.
Personally I tend to take the drive out of the old laptop and get a hard disk enclusure for it so that it can then be used as a USB drive. |

The world could be a better place if we didnt just trash everything - I like the cleaning options and then safe storage of the disk if youre concerned or just repurposing the equipment. Smashing, burning etc is so wasteful. |

Truth is that if you are worried about some government/government body or organization that has the money and technical know-how to own and use a tunnelling electron microscope any information can be recovered from any hard drive that has not been totally destroyed.
However if anyone wants to sell any old computer without risking any of their data there is a very simple way to do this...
Do a complete OS reinstall including adding a hard-drive partition (for the OS system). Provided you have either the OS installation disk or the manufactures recovery disk its simply a case of turn on, insert disk, and follow instruction for full installation. |
