Avoiding scammers when selling a car

I've never sold a second hand car before.
My Civic is currently on a couple of listings sites.
I've already had a good selection of idiots and scam artists. Seriously, why try to scam a car worth about £1k???
I've declined the stupid offers. I've declined the offer of the full asking price from the man who wanted to pay by Paypal and have it collected by courier.
What else do I need to be aware of to avoid the con artists?
Nobody will be running away with it on the test drive because it's not insured, so nobody will be test driving it. |

If he's willing to send a tow truck to collect it then tell him he can send cash with the driver. The only issue is signing the log book but he can send full details of name/address/contact number with a letter confirming the sale with the date on it and a signature. Also get this confirmed by email prior to collection.
As long as you have proof that the car is no longer yours and you send off the V5 to the DVLA with the new owners details, and you get the cash up front, then thats all you need to do. |

"Nobody sensible will buy it without a test drive"
Then they need to get their own insurance.
At £40/day I am not insuring a £1k car for test drives.
And low value cars do sell without test drives. It's only just gone straight through the MOT just needing brake pads. |

"Be sure to fill the vv5or log book remember its your responsibility not the new keepers. Oh an 1 last tip don't forget your tomtoms under the passenger seat "
No it's not! And I won't forget to do the V5.
I'm more concerned about avoiding scammers than that sort of thing.
The idiots have been crawling out of the woodwork since 5 minutes after it was listed. |

The ad says it's had only one minor accident in its history, for which it needed a new bumper skin, so I'm getting people calling and e-mailing to ask if its a Cat C or Cat D...

The guy that bought mine agreed the price on the phone and turned up £150 short. He was clearly expecting me to cave on the price... I guess he didn't expect my brother.
There are so many chancers and timewasters in every area of life. I'm all for a bargain but don't take the piss.
Good luck |
