I can send you a list. The Empire State Building is impressive but I liked the Rockefeller Centre better. The view is epic.

I'll dig out my list and PM it.

but to see places, central park, grand central station.

to get from the airport to your hotel use the command bus, cheapest wat to do it, but remember to give 48 hours notice of your return to the airport

I recommend a guided cycle tour around NY to absorb the feel of this amazing metropolis. The Frick Collection is truly inspiring.

I go quite regularly with work and I personally prefer the Park Hyatt. Very easy to get to from JFK or EWR and near to all the touristy sites.

I recommend going on the Central Park cycle tour, i always hire out a bike and spend the day wandering around. Pure bliss.

The trade centre memorial garden is worth a visit.

Take the statton island ferry for the best views of the Statue of Liberty. It's free and better than spending loads and queuing forever to go inside the statue.

The best views in New York are from the top of the Rockefeller centre. Book your ticket in advance and you can pick a time slot.

Walk across the brooklyn bridge for spectacular views. Do this in the day then at night to see New York lit up.

We stay at the Eastgate tower hotel.

Great location , near grand central station and a short walk from the Empire State.

It's a apartment hotel so you get a kitchen and from room.

Take the east river ferry for a cheap river cruise.

The High Line walk through Chelsea and the meat packing district is great, and also free.

Some of the best restaurants are in the meat packing district as well.

Tried to pvt but wouldn't let me!! I was in New York last month for 10 days. We stayed at the grand hyatt grand central station. Brilliant hotel!!! Just slightly out of Times Square but only a 10 min walk. We did all the usual tourist places, if you want shopping go on a bus to woodberry common all designer outlets and much cheaper than in the city. The sea food grill at the bottom of the rockafella centre was amazing, as was Ellen's stardust diner on Broadway. We hired a tut tut around Central Park which was $50 a guided tour of places from films etc the John Lennon memorial etc one of the best things we did too. We also went into the diamond district very good value for money if you want a diamond. Take comfy shoes we walked hours everyday and bought more shoes lol. We also bought a New York pass to get into the attractions but beware it says u que jump you don't and will find you can wye hours unless u hit things at the right times, also found Chinese and Indian people didn't like to que so pushed u out of the way to go first. It's an amazing city hope you enjoy it much as we did. Only wish I was there now!!!

Edinburgh

This lovely little Italian restaurant does really, really good pizza! My friend, who's almost a native, took me here for pizza. Really good food and a nice atmosphere. daciro.com

The best view of the city, without doubt, is to be had from the Rockefeller Centre... was worth every penny for the 360 view. I loved it more than the Empire State Building, would definitely do the Top of the Rock again, the ESB not so much.

I did a few of the museums... I'm not really much of a culture vulture but the Guggenheim is a fabulous building (I'm not a big fan of modern art and spent most of my visit shaking my head and rolling my eyes like some sort of pensioner!) and the Frick is also a beautiful building but I didn't go in. The Metro was interesting but I could have spent days trying to navigate round it! I like people better than art!

The bus tours are pretty good and I bought the NY Pass but realistically you run out of time before you get to use it for all the things you can go to so I don't know if it's really cheaper, maybe a two day pass is worth it if you want to cram as much as you can into two days. The subway is very handy for getting to the other side of town and really easy to navigate. The city as a whole is very easy to get round once you get your bearings.

The bus office is just up from Times square, on 8th Avenue (between W47th/W48th) and the staff were really helpful. The main bus station is on West 45th Street between 8th & 9th Avenue, Port Authority Bus Terminal and you can get pretty much anywhere from there. The bus from the airport will drop you there depending on where you fly to. I went to Newark and jumped the bus there. You can pay when you get on... I think it was about $28 return. Ask the bus driver though cause you may be able to get off closer to where you're staying.

Great pancakes for breakfast in Ruby Tuesdays on Times Square and there's a gorgeous little Italian Place on the street at the top of Fifth Avenue (I can't remember what it's called) but it's adjacent to the Apple place. It was full of locals and had really nice food. I found that the portions were ridiculously huge in lots of places but the little places filled with locals generally have it right.

The Upper East Side is lovely... how the other half live. Nice for a wander though. Oh and if you like chocolate... visit the Lindt shop just along from Tiffanys on Fifth Avenue... they have chocolate balls of every flavour! Amazing!

The 9/11 memorial was emotional, they've made a lovely job of the gardens. Take tissues. There's a water taxi that you can jump on and off, it gives you a great view of the city from the Hudson. If you walk to the end of West 47th/46th Street you'll come out beside the Space Museum and the water taxi goes from there.

Central Park is my favourite spot, there's a spot up by Bethesda Fountain where there are street performers most days. Beyond there the skaters come on the weekend and they close a circle, play great music and dance on skates. It's great to watch. Everyone is super happy all of the time. I'm not sure if this happens through the winter but it's definitely worth a watch.

I think I liked Soho and Little Italy and Chinatown the best for wandering round the back streets. There are some great little dinky shops and Greenwich Village is fab too. I'm not really a Fifth Avenue sort of shopper, favouring the little shops more. Max Brenner is worth a visit for the best hot chocolate I've ever tasted!

Walking the Highline is the one thing that many people recommended and the one thing I ran out of time to do. Obviously I'll just have to go back!

I rented an apartment just off Times Square (which has so many lights it feels like daytime at midnight) I booked that through housetrip.com

I think the best think about New York City are the people. Everywhere I went people chattered to me, if I looked lost then people stopped to help me. They are so laid back and appear to be happy all of the time. Even the street people are charming.

There's a great Cuban bar, off Times Square, go up the road next to the Virgin Megastore.

Asia De Cuba for food...

Soho & the meat packing district are cool n artistic...

But not been for 8 years, so may be different.

Yes... the Brooklyn Bridge is a must to walk over but if you're there at night, take in the skyline from the Brooklyn side, it really is spectacular.

Keep an eye on flights... I booked mine in September for April and they were 400 direct. Worth looking now.

I did it separately because I was there for two weeks and wanted to be able to live there rather than stay in a hotel so I rented an apartment. It wasn't cheap but not hugely more than a hotel for that sort of time.

My personal view is that no time is ever enough but I left a but of my heart there the first time round. There's so much to see/do that you'll never get round half of the things you want to do. Getting from A to B takes time. Wear comfy shoes and be prepared to walk miles.

We're going again in March for the first time in 18 years. My advice would be to walk as much as possible, NYC is best seen from street level.

Lots of the main places have been mentioned. We would recommend that you buy a Lonely Planet guide or similar for New York City (as opposed to NY state). Then you can plan ahead.

Have fun, you'll love it!

Skyscanner is good for flights.

We look on tripadvisor for hotels and then try and book direct with the hotel.

Yes. Hotels will be advertised on many sites but you sometimes get a better deal going directly to their website. With tripadvisor it will show you the prices from three or four booking agents, you can save quite a bit by going direct though.

Last time I went I stayed in Brooklyn Heights in a old brown stone apartment. The walk into Manhattan over Brooklyn Bridge was great. I preferred Ellis Island to the Statue of Liberty and Staten Island Ferry is also better to see Lady Liberty. SoHo, china town, little Italy and Greenwich village are wonderful places to bimble around. Quirky places to shop, characters and eat. Grand central Station for me was rather beautiful. It is an amazing city I hope you enjoy x

We went in May....(this stuff may be already mentioned cba to read every post)

Staten Island Ferry - free boat trip past Statue of Liberty

The View at the Marriot Marquis Hotel Times Sq - revolving restaurant where you can just go have a beer or have the buffet.

Queued at TKTS by the red steps in Times Sq and got Broadway Tickets at half price for that day.

On the corner of Lexington and 39th street.

It's in an area called Marray Hill, about a ten minute walk from the Empire State. We've been there so often that we sometimes get a free dessert or a couple if free beers when we visit.

The menu is extensive, portions are huge and it does the best New York cheesecake we've ever tasted. The corned beef hash is a particular favourite of mine as well.

If you are going to grand central station it's just around the corner from there.

Newcastle and Gateshead

If you are staying in Manhattan or the Bronx it is almost easier flying into Newark

If staying in queens or Brooklyn then easier flying into JFK

As for things to do... Bronx zoo... Baseball game at either citi field or Yankee stadium, chilling in Greenwich village, cheap knock off shopping by canal street as well as most of the other things ppl have mentioned

"If you are staying in Manhattan or the Bronx it is almost easier flying into Newark

If staying in queens or Brooklyn then easier flying into JFK

As for things to do... Bronx zoo... Baseball game at either citi field or Yankee stadium, chilling in Greenwich village, cheap knock off shopping by canal street as well as most of the other things ppl have mentioned"

my son wants to see a game!

long suffering Mets fan me so I use to spend my summers living in the old shea stadium (dead opposite flushing meadows when they have the us tennis open)...

if you are staying in Manhattan then it is probably a little easier to get to Yankee stadium than it is Citi Field

I always stay at Hotel One UN. It's central enough to walk to Times Square (15 mins), 5 mins from grand central station and is a lovely hotel with amazing views. Just ask to be in the newly refurbished tower and on a high floor! New York is my favourite city in the world.

actually... you have not said when you were looking to go.... some of the stuff i am tempted to suggest are season dependant.. i.e ice skating at rockafella centre, seeing something as MSG,

I love the circle line ferry.....

p.s if you are going to explore using the buses and the subway... you will need exact money as they dont give chance... so buy loads of MTA tokens....

if you do get a chance... Coney Island is a favourite of mine as well.....

I went in May, so many thunderstorms, take waterproofs just in case!

If you get the chance you should visit a sushi restaurant called Ninja and go up to Niagara Falls.

Do the full boat tour around Manhattan, it's amazing, cost $18 for 2 hours.

It'll be cold but you'll see the Christmas decorations which are beautiful. There's free ice skating in Central Park throughout winter. All you pay for is the skate hire.

Liverpool

Get on a tour bus, brialliant way to See the sights and you can jump on and off as and when you want. Also get a 3 day ticket so you dont have to pack into 1 day.

brilliant city to see

manchester

A helicopter flight to see the sights and once you've seen them, get the pilot to drop you off in Boston. A much better place. New York is a busy place, with people flying about, with a coffee in one hand and a phone welded to their ear.

Have fun lol

If not already mentioned Staten Island ferry gives great views of Statue of Liberty and lower manhattan as does the Brooklyn boardwalk . You used to be able to walk over the Brooklyn bridge too which is pretty cool .

Cheers Claire sounds good although my ice skating skills are less to be desired- not quit sure I fancy clinging on to the side of the rink looking like I shat myself lol x

Great thread and opportune as I have just booked a flight to New York and had started on ideas of things to do.

I always book flights and hotels separately, and agree with the posters above that checking expedia etc. gives an idea of pricing but better deals can often be obtained directly from the hotel.
