Much as I love cycling and I do it pretty much everyday the one thing I won't even consider is snow and severe iciness. I saw a pretty nasty accident where a nurse come off her bike in the snow a couple of years ago and i went over to get her up out of the middle of the carriage way on a main road.
Turned out there was thick ice under a couple of inches of slushy snow and her wheel slid out and hit a kerb.
I get really cranky and pissed off when I don't get out in the saddle but I'm a firm believer also in the saying "live to fight another day". |

Last nights ride home was slightly interesting
There were a couple of places, where snow (but very little of it) had been blown across road, by the wind, hiding the potholes
No issues though, barely a slip, even on '23' section tyres |

I had Rubino on my work bike (ie; all year rounder/'do everything') in a '23', as the blue Ribbles won't take fatter carcasses, not even '25'!
Now it has Schwalbe Lugano on
My new best bike; a Ribble Gran-Fondo (with 11-speed Ultegra, & Ritchey WCS bars, stem, seat-pin, Ultegra wheels) has Schwalbe 'One' tyres
Now l have a full carbon Ridley, surplus to requirements |

Well, I don't ride in a PVC skirt that's for sure!
My bike is best described as being set up for long distance/audax rides so all rounder tyres are what I aim for. Something supple enough that I have speed plus grip, but tough enough I'm not left with a shredded tyre 80 miles from home. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

Can't believe there's a thread on here where people are discussing 23 or 25mm tyres?
I normally visit FAB when I'm bored of cycling websites, so this is blurring my interests!
By the way, 25mm all the time, much better grip, rolling resistance and comfort. But this time of year I'm normally out on the cx bike! |

"Can't believe there's a thread on here where people are discussing 23 or 25mm tyres? "
Takes allsorts!!!!!
'23' on my top 3 road bikes
'20' on my old commuter, demoted 'best bike', when l bought my Ridley (now demoted itself, & in storage!)
"I normally visit FAB when I'm bored of cycling websites, so this is blurring my interests!"
Now you'll be trying to place us all, on various cycling forums, or wondering if we're on here, when you see other cyclists when you're out
"By the way, 25mm all the time, much better grip, rolling resistance and comfort. But this time of year I'm normally out on the cx bike!"
I guess so, but l find it all dependant on riders weight/riding style?
I think l ride pretty lightly (for want of an expression), l used to race MTB on 1.5" tyres, & that was without suspension
My CX is hanging up in garage, was just put back after last CX race

So this morning I unshipped my chain while descending. I ride fixed and not that Ive ever done it before in 25 years but normally the chain just flaps around. But it can get tangled up and lock up the back wheel which is what happened this morning. So I went from descending at 30mph+ to skidding at 30mph in an instant! No idea how I kept it upright to say ot was a struggle is an understatement! |

Almost the same for me, on my commute yesterday
On my way in, l drop down a fairly exposed hill (wind can blow across valley), l was struggling to turn a 34 x 17 down a 1-in-15!!!
Coming home was great though! |

I restarted my leisure cycling in the last few days and now have my first couple of 50+ milers under my belt.
Beautiful weather in these parts..Bristol/bath etc..in the mid mornings/early afternoons.
I commute every day but it's great to be back in the saddle again properly as even though I ride year round its just not anywhere near as enjoyable without those lovely warm rays on your face |

Trying to get out on the roads nice and early with the lovely sunny starts at every opportunity now.
I'm quite fortunate also in that the area that I live in means I can be out on lovely country roads within a few minutes and on the way to bath, cheddar & wells etc in no time which gives me all the more motivation.
I ride to commute year round but you cant beat a nice pleasurable ride out for leisure/training purposes on a nice sunny morning.
Almost makes me wanna add another bike to the menagerie!! |

Great news; don't forget to have a good hearty breakfast before you head out and take enough food to eat on the ride.
Nibble on your bars say every 30mins once you start getting hungry and you should be ok.
Good luck |

Yeah. Basically just don't stop eating(try to pre empt the hunger feeling or it might be too late!).
And stretch the fuck out of your body before warming up on the bike. Unless you're 18 or something, in which case just SMASH it!
Oh: and beware energy gels: just use them in an emergency if you get the bonk. Lots of people get upset stomachs with the nasty little things. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
I would add, try out different energy foods beforehand so you can find out any potential problems.
I don't suffer from gels but some do - cramps and squits aren't pleasant 60 miles in.
Eat little and often, large meals will slow you down and make you sluggish.
Go slower than you are used to, you don't want to burn out with 40 miles to go.
Also, good quality padded shorts and a pot of 'minty arse lard' will be of real value. |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
seeing gels mentioned.. what is it about litter lout cyclists.. i see the empty packets slung at the side of roads when ever I'm out... |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

I'm in the same position. Was a member of a club 25 years ago, and just getting back in to it. NO one acknowledges you anymore when you nod or smile at them(well, i think the ratio is about 9:1). Really putting me off. I used to love the crack on a Sunday morning too.
Plus the membership fee is £30 for mine. WTF! My old club in Grimsby only charges £11 for chrissakes! |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
"Used to be in a club years ago, trying to get into one now but they are so stuck up themselves."
Been in one of the local clubs for about 25 years+
I don't ride with them, just treating it as a 'badge of convenience'
It's cheaper to pay the fees (£10/year), than buy new (non- club) jerseys, jackets, bib-shorts, bib-tights
Or is that my Yorkshireness showing?? (Deep pockets-short arms?)
That said, l've raced MTB in the early 90's in their name, & Cyclo-Cross too (as recent as last year) |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
Had a while out yesterday, after work
Suffered though, as l'd been dressed for 06:30 in the morning (bib-tights & long-sleeve jersey), so l got a bit too hot!!!!
Plus on winter bike, still not got the new bike out yet |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)
67 miles round the Dales yesterday, circuit of Ingleborough.
I too was a tad overdressed, with a base layer under my short sleeved jersey. Blew up on the first climb and had to get rid of a layer. My riding mate shot off up the first hill and i thought i was in for a horrible day.
Fortunately for me he burnt himself out on the climb and i repeatedly dropped him for the next 55 miles! |
