Titz Towers, North Notts

It's when they drop one shoe out of the window every 10 miles, plus the odd pair of trousers that gets me

I don't, I overtake them and leave em to it. Driving's a pretty unpleasant experience on a motorway as it is without getting stressed by those that ignore the rules.

I don't hate them! as long as they are doing 70mph you should never catch up with them to be a problem.

It's the TWAT! that insists on sitting in the middle lane doing 55mph for miles and miles that get on my tit's LoL

Thats what the inside lane is for!

What about the ones that straddle two lanes where the road narrows so nobody can get passed them?

You shouldn't be sitting in the middle

Lane even if you're doing 70

The high way code says you must keep right. If there is no one in the inside lane and you're not over taking then move the hell over.

We drive on the left in the UK

You should be in the left hand lane unless overtaking.... It's very simple

There is no such thing as a 'slow' or 'fast' lane

I recently drove through LA in the rush hour... 5 lanes and it was a piece of piss compared to the M6

The middle lane is the first overtaking lane. Undertaking is dangerous so if you sit there and only allow 50% of the traffic past you that the road is designed to handle you are causing a blockage.

It is also an indication that the person driving is not able or willing to engage with other road users and is only going to make a decision which is selfish and without consideration.

It also suggests they do not know the rules of the road which is worrying. Or that they are simply not thinking about what they are doing which is also worrying.

People who treat motorway driving like it is easy and you do not need to concentrate all the time on your road position and what is happening about you are dangerous.

Correct. I hate it when they match the speed of the inside lane, effectively lane blocking, making it difficult to make exits at junctions.

Add to that those who drive too close, again making it difficult to change lanes for an exit, and who sit there even when it's clear you have your indicator on. What happened to give way to the right?

Another one who doesn't hate them - I just assume that their mind's are elsewhere, and I keep focused on what my goals are, and how to drive safely to avoid them. Keep left unless over-taking is such an important rule here

Nowhere in the Highway Code does it state you have to give way to other motorists who are changing lanes.

It's up to the driver to ensure they're in the correct lanes in plenty of time.

If the driver inside you is matching your speed and preventing your changing lane then it's up to you to react to that. You're carrying out the overtaking manoeuvre after all.

When carriageways which are chocker, and having planned well in advance for an exit (I usually try to get over at least a mile ahead of time), and most vehicles practically bumper to bumper what do you suggest? I do a huge amount of motorway driving. I'm hardly a novice. I'm always cautious and always plan manoeuvres well in advance.

The M60 is especially bad for this.

When I'm in the inside lane I always allow a generous stopping distance and always let people in who indicate. It's not exactly going to delay me to do so.

I think many simply don't know what a safe stopping distance is and drive as they do as if they're doing 30 in the town.

"Why do you guys hate them so much? "

(him) Because they are just complete selfish arseholes who think the LAW does not include them like the rest of the population. I travel up & down the M20 & M26 everyday to get to work & back & have seen this every single day for the last god knows how many years. Lane hogging is ILLEGAL & about 6 months ago, the government even spent thousands of tax payers money, educating the tax payers that couldn't give a shit about other road users or the law. It is now an on the spot fine of £100 for lane hogging & £100 fine for tailgating. I passed my driving test in 1987 but, unless it has changed over the years, The Highway Code has ALWAYS said that the inside lane is for the driving, & any further lanes are for overtaking ONLY. Once the overtake has been done, the driver should pull back into lane 1.

Don't lane hoggers realise that they turn multi lane carriageways in to ordinary roads. Outside lane hoggers, who won't move over so they can be overtaken, have now made that carriageway into a single lane road because no one can get passed. Middle lane hoggers turn 3 lane motorways in to a dual carriageway because there is now only 1 lane for overtaking not 2. It's been shown also that it's lane hoggers that cause a lot of the "phantom traffic jams" in the morning & evening rush. 3 lane motorway, Hogger in the middle lane doing 55-60. Car behind doing 60-65 pulls out in the now ONLY lane to overtake. Cars in outside lane overtaking doing 70 now have to start braking because the slower car not even doing the speed limit is forced to the outside. The 1st car doing 70 brakes a little, car behind brakes a little harder, car behind that brakes a little harder, car behind that brakes a bit more, etc, etc. Because everyone starts braking, you now start to get the concertina effect causing accidents because of other people following to close, which tail gating is illegal too. Now, because of that lane hogger, 2 miles back, the traffic is at stand still & now people are going to be late for work. - all because of some selfish twat thinks he is above the law & lane hogs. Lane hoggers - hate them with a vengeance.

Generally speaking people sitting in the middle lane makes no difference to me, as I tend to set my cruse control to 62 mph and bumble along (in the first lane, of course).

There are two occasions where it does get on my nerves.

One is when someone is going slower than me but in the second lane, as this means I have to move over to the third lane to get past them. Now ok I have every right to be in the third lane, and most of the time I tend to speed up, but I still encounter the muppets that like driving up ones exhaust pipe (and I HATE them, as a side note anyone who tries to bully my small rear by doing this will only end up going slower).

The other is when the motorway is busy and you end up with the MLOC members occupying the second lane, then the third lane full of those trying to get past, yet the first lane is nearly empty. In this case to get past the MLOC members you should move over to the third lane, but that is going just as slow as the second. So you either end up obaying the motorway rules and slow down to stay behind the MLOC member or undertake them and risk an unmarked car pulling you. All because some selfish person cannot be bothered to gently turn their stearing wheel and allow the motorway to be used as intended.

I found undertaking in the US makes for more relaxed driving... So people could stay in the middle lane without bothering other motorists.

I would like to see it being legal here (it IS in certain limited circumstances)

The ability to turn right on red if the exit is clear is also a great rule (in US obviously)......left turn on red here

Another good-un is people who think filtering on a motorcycle is illegal..... It's not...

On the whole I think we, as a nation, are pretty good drivers. I do think standards are dropping though.....from personal observation...

If you don't have the intelligence to know how to drive correctly on a motorway, you should not be driving. You stay in the left hand lane unless overtaking then moving to the left hand lane when safely possible.

Lazy/ stupid fuck wits who stay in the middle or outside lane regardless are the people who cause the damn accidents.

German roads are best you can do some really fast driving over long distance not because they have loads of lanes (2 lanes mostly ) but they understand once you go past a car ( overtake ) you pull in as someone is always going faster lol ??

They also have to be instructed in motorway driving ?

People driving in the wrong lane seriously increase congestion. They prevent people from driving properly. You should ALWAYS return to the left hand lane after overtaking.

I suppose the real question should be "why do people want to drive in the middle lane?"

Shropshire/Midlands

My take is that middle lane hoggers are too lazy to pull out to overtake slower vehicles in the inside lane or ones that are coming onto the motorway and then pull in again, but just want to tootle along in their little bubble in the middle lane. What they don't realise is that it causes more dangerous driving: people undertaking (although you're allowed to stay in the inside lane if you catch up to a middle lane hogger and not cross 2 lanes to overtake in the third lane, and that restricted vehicles, such as lorries and towing vehicles can't pull out into the third lane to overtake them.

It's also annoying when vehicles, especially lorries pull out to overtake another lorry and then we have a snail race in the 2 lanes. That's what can cause congestion, as everyone races to get into the third lane as not to get stuck behind them.

It annoys me tailgaters too. When you need to overtake in the third lane and they're trying to hurry you up to come over.

It never surprises me what I see on the motorway these days...

I love middle lane drivers, they help break the monotony of long motorway runs. I play circles with them.

For those who are not yet antiquated with the game here is how it is played:

First, overtake in the normal way pulling back into the left hand lane. On noticing that the middle lane driver has not followed you into the left hand lane then slow up so that they crawl past you. (A nice touch is to look over and give them a smile and wave.) Then as they continue on their way increase your speed and when at a safe distance behind them pull out overtake pull in slow up smile and wave, pull out overtake pull in slow down smile wave blow kiss...

If you have a passenger they can show a count and smile wave and blow kisses every time you overtake.

Bet you dont get passed 4!

if you insist in driving in the middle lane, then you are close to being comatose. There is very little mental activity going on at all.

If you want to learn how to drive watch the truckers.

Keep to the left, pull out to overtake, then get back in the left lane.

It really isn't difficult.

My new intention will relieve us all from the dangers of drivers hogging the wrong lane. Using a combination of sat nav, mobile phone technology and some excess cash due to lower road spending due to winter warmer weather, all motorways will be fitted this year. Using the concept of trapdoors, roads will be fitted with road sections that will drop the offending car through. The occupant and car will be digested and recycled into new road surfacing and hard core. The self renewing road, so that some good can come from the turds that float in the wrong lane. Failing that, all other road users will be able to voice dial the special forces to get the offenders taken out and disappeared.

What about the wankers that speed up as you overtake them forcing you to go faster and then slow down once you are finally in front of them. Or the tossers who overtake you and then slow down causing you to brake, pull out and overtake them. Often speeding up again as you go past.

"People driving in the wrong lane seriously increase congestion. They prevent people from driving properly. You should ALWAYS return to the left hand lane after overtaking.

I suppose the real question should be "why do people want to drive in the middle lane?""

I have a theory.

I mostly drive the M57. M58. M62. M6. M60. M602. M74. M42. M3. occasionally M1 but not often.

When the recent laws were introduced I thought I'd best keep a good check on myself and move over to the left and stay there each time it's possible.

First few days were a learning curve.

Journies went something like this.

In the left. Lorry move out. Move in lorry move out . Move in . Move out.

Move in ...... FUCKING LET ME OUT!

Bastards. Let me out! I'm fucking stuck now!

Fuck me here's a slip road with cars wanting in!

I have to move over.

Let me out! Bastaaaaaaaaaaaards ! Let me move over !

Jesus i'm going to die. TWATS !

Move back in. Caravan. Move out overtake. Move in. Eddie Stobbard ahead move out. Move in . Move out , move in, move out , move in. Move out. Uhmmmmmm

Let me in .... Fucks sake let me in. Twats. Let me in .... Fuck ... another slip road and no where to go ! Move out .....Move out again .. Speed up , break speed limit ........fuck it ... fuck it just get out of this mess and away from all the dickheads..... Move into middle.

Can't get into inside. Fucking move ! I'm not goin behind the transporter. Can't see... fuck ..... someone let me in ... Why are you all going 50 bumper to bumper......let me in!!

Audi approaching behind with all rockets on full blast, flashing and beeping .... twat. Hovers behind like a police helicopter then swoops into the right like a dragonfly.... he looks angry .... i'm philosophical about his anger.....

Fuck Sake ... someone let me in. Speed up overtaking everyone. Move in behind the mini .... mini is sipping tea n having a fag and doing 55.... move out, move in , lorry ahead, move out , move in ,

Move out and so the lunacy continues

The left lane is always jammed with slow vehicles.

The overtake and move in rule is applied with the idea that there are only two vehicles on the motorway at any given point in time. YOU and a Green John Lewis Lorry.

Granny pretty much summed it up.

Besides, some people are on long drives and concentration has lapsed, some just don't move over, some forget, some feel like they are in a nice safe place there.

Get over it and pass when you can. You're not as important as you think you are.

"

Absolutely spot on!! Lol

I challenge all those who scream 'keep to the left' to do exactly that on their next journey. Then check your stress levels.

Fact is that there is so much traffic now that it is not always feasible.

Whatever lane you're in, if there's nothing in front and a line of grumpy looking people stuck behind you, you're in the way

It is the law in the UK now that you should be in the left lane unless you are overtaking; simples!

So CLOC (Centre Lane Owners Club) people get to the left whatever speed you are doing! Unless of course you are half asleep or on the mobile phone as seems to be the usual condition of CLOC members when you see them. Then hopefully you will be caught by the police cars you are too unaware of to notice.

I have driven thousand of miles in the USA and love their pass both sides laws. It is not dangerous if people are aware of their surroundings.

Well if it is too much effort to drive properly get off the road and let someone else do it right.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

And leave it to all the perfect drivers like you?

Thanks.

I'll just drive how I drive. Had lots of police pass me on m/ways and they didn't seem to mind how I drove.

Ps I never sit in the middle lane trundling along in case anyone assumes I do. In fact, until you see how I drive make no assumptions.

Pps no speeding tickets and no points on my licence.

This.

We have a perfectly useable car-park (free) near school that necessitates a very pleasant walk of about 400 yards along a footpath to school, and yet there are still parents who insist on driving right up to the (single track with passing places) road outside the school and cramming their cars in making the visibilty non-existent..

I've timed the walk, It takes approximately 7 minutes.

The excuse I always hear is that they are too busy/in too much of a hurry to walk...

Its 7 minutes ffs. GET UP 7 MINUTES EARLIER.

Lazy & dangerous all in one...

Given that 70 is the maximum speed limit, all cars should be doing slightly under 70 at all times.

I do quite a lot of motorway driving and I find the paid up members of the middle lane club a) do it because they don't care about other drivers. And b) cause all sorts of issues I can't pull over to overtake because some micra is doing 45mph and again can't get out of someone's way for the same reason. I don't like undertaking but I find I have no choice sometimes.

And don't get me started with the flash car brigade.

Shouldn't that be 14 minutes if it's 7 there it must be 7 back.

Possibly - but the 'issue' appears to be having time to get your kids to school on time, rather than having to get away quickly.

When on the bike I will choose to use the middle lane in the wet, as I have two lanes to slide across if things go wrong. The times I use the motorways they are usually clear.

You have to start somewhere. Lets face facts, not even the police drive at 70 on motorways.

Young people are not necessarily more dangerous than any other group, the dangerous ones are those who do not realise they are im danger or that their presence is an inherent danger to others.

Skilled drivers are not the ones who can drive fast but who can interact with other users safely and drive with circumspection and consideration. We all make mistakes but you can drive such that your mistakes have less of an effect as you are in a safer situation.

Driving in the wrong lane shows no consideration for other people only your own wish not to have to do very much when you drive.

But I want and like being/sitting in the middle!! "

When you are eventually caught, you will only have yourself to blame for the £100 fine & 3 points, and I doubt you will get any sympathy off here seeing how many people in this thread that hate lane hoggers.

"The middle lane is the first overtaking lane.

People who treat motorway driving like it is easy and you do not need to concentrate all the time on your road position and what is happening about you are dangerous."

No... Let's not get on to bikers in this thread. With so many bad & dangerous riders (not all) that think they are above the law, they need a thread of their own. Hopefully you're not one of the countless that tailgate & dazzle & blind drivers with the main beam on that undertake between the cars almost taking off wing mirrors. All of which is illegal.
