Having just done an online calculation showing what help i'm entitled too for returning back to work i can easily understand why some people stay at home..

im not in social housing, im privately rented but i am a 'lone parent' so thats why i get the help.
im thrilled to have a job for my own self worth, but to see id be working for just £1.24 more for 29hrs work,

I'm a single working parent too and I would probably be better off financially staying at home. But I go to work for own sanity and to I still the working ethic to my child. I agree that it is depressing effectively working for nothing but I would rather do that and have tons of self-respect.
Not having a go by the way, just putting my point of view across x |

im unsure really ive worked and lived independently with no benefits (prior to my child)
worked along side benefits (with child)
and been soley dependent on benefits (with child)
life currently certainly isnt easy being on income support thats for sure, i dont drink, smoke, do drugs, have no loans, credit cards, no sky tv etc..
the money i recieve from the gov goes on rent, council tax, water rates, gas, elec,
yes i guess my car, broadband/landline, and tv licence are luxuries, but after those theres not much to go on food. im far from lavish
in answer to the question though Lib, id say benefits need cutting to make it worth the people returning. but im not lavish and its still really tight to survive |

lol i didnt think you were having a go, its an open forum. i am returning to work just saddened me because i didn't realize how little the difference was financially..

there are incentives but they aren't financial unfortunately. It thoroughly depresses me during the 6 weeks holiday as all my wages go on child care fees. Thankfully I have a very, very supportive family who continually help me out, I would not survive if it wasn't for them x |

I know you are not in social housing I only used it as an example as HB would cover the full rent if I was...I'd get the shared allowance as I'm under 35 so would have to find a couple £100 to make up the shortfall in HB...It's a tough old world out there and I'm truly happy to be in work even if I am skint a week after payday as it covers rent, bills a few clothes and a bit of vodka...  good luck in your new role it will be exciting times |

If you work over 30 hours I think it would affect your housing and council tax benefits so you would be even more worse off. Not sure if that is correct though? |

No they look at income not hours if you work under 16 hours you would be entitled to passported benefits |

not entirely sure how that would work..
from basic understanding id be able to get more working tax credit as id be entering a higher bracket 30-38hrs work .. but also the more earnings i bring home in wages the less housing benefit i recieve.
not looked into that as 9-3 5 days a week is enough..
they are knocking off an hour to allow me to drop and pick lil one up from school which im greatful for

working tax credit is based on the hours worked
housing benefit is based on the earnings received
eg i worked 24 hrs at £6 my working tax credit was in the 16-24 bracket meaning £72.50 each week..housing ben of approximately £80
i then had a pay rise to £6.94... WTC was still the same at £72.50 but because my weekly earnings had increased my housing benefit was reduced to £68 |

Those are the hours I work. Once my child goes to senior school (in 2 years time) I will go full time but will also lose my benefits. You can't win but hey, money doesn't bring happiness does it!x |

I worry that some feel there should be a financial incentive to work doesn't everyone have the responsibility to contribute to the system if they can? I don't think there should be an incentive to work or a deterrent not to sit on your arse people it just would be nice if people did the fair thing. |

understand what you are saying, ive worked before and returning back to it, but my point is that i can understand why (when circumstances permit) that some adults think why work when i can sit on my arse, do as i please with no one to tell me what to do when the difference in finances at the end of the month is so very little.

Im a lone parent on 2 children but have a mortgage so cant possible afford to not work as id lose my home and have 2 yrs left only to pay. Because of this i work over 50 hours a week on 2 jobs and struggle with money.. Becausenof the hours i work i get no help but if i cut my hours to get help id be finantially worse off... Havent had a holiday for 5 years, dont smoke and have no social life because of lack of funds. Im screwed what ever way i look at it. If i had 5 kids and lived in a council house and claimed some had ADHD and i had a drink problem i would be minted. |

they give with one and take with the other - i have a person i know who has five kids - hubby not working - has money to take them all out to the corrie experience - has a good night out with mates every friday - kid got tablet thing for birthday gift - just had a week in a caravan - theyre not gonna go back to work just keep producing kids - i struggle to eat some weeks makes me so fkg angry - good on you for going back to work |

We have been bike riding in wales, picnics at the beach, walked the wirral way, swimming (free for kids in the holidays) and climbed snowdon. All free and memories made... Kicks arse on the coronation street experience lol but if im honest christmas and birthdays do bother me but my kids dont go without x |

We had an MP (Anthony Steen) visit an old workplace and a 36yr old woman said why is there no affordable housing for single people who work dammed hard.. he answered 'have a baby or get a drug addiction'
