Does your mobile give away your address in photos?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I was amazed the other day to discover that many people still do not know that a some of the hidden data that a smart phone attaches to every photo it takes is the GPS position of that photo.

If you then send that photo to someone via email or any other chat programme that data is transferred to. So what? You may say.

Well if you use an iPad or iPhone search the App Store for GPS extraction from photos or exif data viewer. Then get it to scan the photo you took with your smart phone.

It will give exact latitude and longitude plus time and date. Some will even show where the photo was taken on a map and in some cases will actually name the address.

A free app that will do this for OS device is koredoko. For PC just google for GpSextract. I'm sure there will be similar apps for Andriod.

The good news is that you can remove GPS and exif data from any photo. Just need the right software to do it and real cameras -provided that they don't have GPS built in - won't have location data in the exif for a photo.

Bso if you send selfies or use your smart phones wonderful camera, please do be mindful that in sending that photo to someone you don't know that you could be telling them exactly where you live!

I don't think my crappy old phone would do that.

Worth bumping up a bit I think....

In the camera settings on some phones you can switch the GPS off so that it doesn't store that information.. I could on my old Samsung, HTC and can on my Sony Xperia..

Yeah or just turn off privacy settings for camera and photos on the iPhone so it doesn't log GPS exit data.

Lots of ways, there are some seriously odd people masquerading as fairly normal on here.

I'd say that because of the lengths it sounds like someone would have to go to, based on the OP, that if someone REALLY wanted to stalk you they would.

Sounds like you'd have to go out of your way to seek/find that info on someone, using tools not commonly accessed by the average Joe (or Jill).

As such I'm not overly concerned but deffo interesting.

Yeah, some might use this data to stand outside a person's house and watch them through their window or even break in and have a wank on their living room floor, wiping themselves on the curtains. Hypothetically speaking.

Just hypothetically speaking one might like to see how many blinds one could stick together. Hypothetically speaking or course, hypothetically.

Oh that passes for normal round here. I'm talking more about the ones who break in while you're on holiday, completely redecorate, change your soft furnishings, put a conservatory on the side and install a lodger in the master bedroom. These individuals are a menace to society.

On advice from a police acquaintance - we've a 5 D cell maglite by the bed.

If you use anything that could be classed as an offensive weapon or wouldn't normally be in your bedroom (i.e golf club, baseball bat, shotgun etc.) you're more likely to end up getting charged with assault!

But a humble torch? Nothing unusual about that being used - especially at night!

(And is heavy enough to do the job! )

My blackberry shows my post code. I've even seen my name flash up when I start it up. It uses data to make it's own files.

I care! because if I message or phone a 'net person' before I have made a firm decision on them I like to think i'm still secure and not traceable.

I think (I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination) that it will show your last location, so if you turned it off at home that's what it will show.

You can turn your GPS off yes but I think (as above) that it will show your last location still but as ever it's entirely possible that I got that bit wrong.

Lots of people seem to think that anyone who doesn't want to advertise the fact that they're a swinger or give their address, phone number and personal details to strangers they have met on the net have something to hide. Not sure why.

I'm glad people have this post useful. It really was just a case of trying to make people aware of the potential for smart camera phones to give away location data that the sender may not be aware of or unhappy to send.

Knowledge gives you the choice.

If you have children or relatives at home or maybe taken photos at work, then there is a chance, albeit a small one I admit, that the GPS data could be used in a way that could be upsetting to you.

Being aware just helps you make that choice. After all would anyone on here really tell someone they haven't met where they or work or maybe like to walk the dog? Unlikely if your a single female or couple.
