That operation cost us £40,000, then he goes and sabotages it by going home early, then not asking for help when he's in danger.
Yes, its sad, but him being a berk is even sadder. |

They did brain studies on morbidly obese people and found that when offered a favourite food the addiction centres of their brain lit up in an MRI scanner in the same way that drug addicts' do when offered their drug of choice.
This proved that at a certain point people become addicted to foid. No surprises that foods people become addicted to are high in sugar, saturated fat and/ are processed.
There is a link between the rise in obesity and the western preoccupation with junk food - either take away or supermarket.
A few decades ago 'convenience' food was expensive and most families ate fresh food cooked from scratch. Fewer and fewer do these days.
I find it astonishing to stand behind someone in a supermarket and see just junk on the conveyor with very little if any fresh produce. Bottles of 'pop', multi packs of crisps and biscuits, oven chips, chicken nuggets, etc.
The only thing I have in my freezer like that are fish fingers and I haven't touched the box for over a month. |

Fish fingers are awesome. I eat as healthily as possible, but the sirens call of a fish finger sandwich can get a bit too much sometimes. |

What's a healthier weight then?
Significant research suggests the healthier long term group fall in the 25-30 BMI group.
Surely, the better solution or pre-emption of such problems is to deny any or all medical treatment once someone passes a threshold, say BMI of 30? |

I've been in households where the fridge and cupboards ate full of the sugary processed junk with no sign of any fresh produce so I'm not astonished anymore. Just disappointed. |

For a 6 foot tall person, BMI of 25 is approx 85 kilos, 13 st 4, and 30 is approx 102 kilos, 16 stone. |

It could be a feasible idea if BMI was an accurate indication of health. x |

It was a really sad story and tragic loss of life. I try not to peek at shopping trolleys, like DB9 mentions, but loathe thinking that carbonated drinks, crisps and crap like turkey twizzlers abound and are a substantial proportion of what folk eat. Some even consume alcohol when not required for medicinal purposes - oh, thats my basket. |

Pass, I could only see that being a possibility with SUDDEN inflation.
As the skin is an organ that grows and heals, I don't think you'd ever see it with even rapid weight gain. x |

Lol it's not like I obsess about it but when the conveyor is right in front of you laden with crap it's difficult not to notice.
I usually think: where's the food? Followed by: is that for a family of four or eight? (When they only have two children). |

I know DB9, i wasnt being critical - sometimes you really cant help but see it all piled onto the belt. I think there are some product development lines that have not yet been explored much. Home phones didnt change much in decades, then mobiles have shifted things massively. Alcopops revolutionised boring old spirits etc. Next step will come the revolution of the lard market. Flavoured lard, liquid lard, carbonated lard, super concentrated lard, but dressed up with snazzy names, just like WKD is probably meths and coloured piss in reality but sounds funky. |

I didn't think you were (hence the lol).
Interestingly, since many food processors started using high fructose corn syruo rather than sugar obesity levels have risen even faster. HFCS creates more fat in the body than sugar, so people who were buying and consuming the same products for years found they were putting on weight though they weren't eating any more.
HFCS started being used due to a surplus corn crop in the US. Farmers there were heavily subsidised and so grew more and more but needed to find a use for the surplus. Some bright spark found it would make a sweet alternative to sugar to sell to food processors. The rest is history.
What people need to start doing is eating more fresh and less processed.
However, processed food is now cheaper than fresh and so now the lower income you have the more likely you are to be obese. People with money can afford healthier food. So within decades poor people have gone from being more likely to be thin to more likely to be fat - both different forms of malnourishment.
And yet we are so judgemental about low income families who become obese. Whereas when they were underweight we had sympathy. |

That's due to the prevailing and incorrect belief that obesity is purely down to greed and laziness. |

Actually hfcs is used because sugar is taxed heavily in America to give the corn farmers a boost. Hfcs is not used much at all in Europe is at all typicaly because it doesn't taste that nice to people used to sugar.
You will be hard pressed to find a major product on our shelves flavoured with corn syrup over sugar.
And may actually be more expensive here depending on supply. |

It's not labelled as HFCS here. It appears as glucose fructose syrup and can be found in biscuits, drinks, ice cream, yogurts, cakes, soups.
Although it contains the same number of calories as sugar it is not metabolised in the human body in the same way. This can lead to weight gain. |

I have a BMI of 30 so I'm apparently obese. Whilst I'm not slim, lifting weights for 25 years tends to increase density with muscle rather than fat. It doesn't take into account muscle mass and is just a guide. Most professional rugby players are obese according to it and I've known some bodybuilders with BMI's of 35 plus with less than 10% bodyfat so its not an accurate way of measuring, just a guide. |

Ok this comment is going to be a little contentious.
I wonder at what point a person relinquishes responsibility for thier own body. This guy couldn't get out if bed let alone look after himself.
I didn't see the whole program but I know her had a number of carers.
I also know he had a gigantically expensive medical procedure not counting all the other medical treatment he weight would of required.
If a person is mentally handicapped you would expect the state to provide care.
If a person self harms you would expect the state to provide a safe environment.
I pay my taxes and I'm happy for this money to be spent in this way.
In both cases the unfortunate individual has had to relinquish personal responsibility.
How is this any different, over eating to this extent is self harm.

"Ive not watched this program but it does sadden me.

Yeap gastric bands/ balloons/ sleaves but even that does not cure it...( know of people who loose vast amounts of weight, yet put it all back on) Untill people get real help with the many reasons why someone uses food as a comfort or pin point the 'need', this kind of story will continue. In reality there is little difference to any addiction... They take to food rather than drugs and booze ... To people who have never touched on these problems it is easy to condem... And mock ( not sayin that you are ) Very sad in my eyes |

again i'll be open and honest.. im at the stage where i am too big for surgery . They have said they would be more concerend about putting me under and my organs wouldnt survive it.
my arguement was why didnt you help sooner,, they came with 'you didnt match the criteria for surgery'

"junk food processed foods all to blame"
Interesting point, but would that apply to alcohol, drugs, betting shops, bingo halls, or any other addiction.
Are supermarkets/food outlets simply supplying people with what they want, or are they creating the demand?
France has a significantly lower obesity problem than the UK, go to any of the supermarket giants and you just don't see the massive aisles of crisps/biscuits, ready meals, processed food that are typical in the UK.
It's difficult to believe that French supermarkets don't want to optimise profit, so it would be reasonable to assume that the demand is simply not there.
The question would then be why.

Very often with morbidly obese people there is a "feeder".......
Often a seemingly insignificant mother or partner who cooks, shops, and enables them, encourages them, and often forces them to eat........
The feeder gets their own kicks by a feeling of power, being needed, and often indispensible to the fat person.
Take away the feeder and often the obese will recover and lose a huge amount of their addiction and their weight. |

This was a point I was alluding too, if you can't even get out of your bed how can you shop prepair and shovel the vast amounts of food in you to make yourself so fat.
Some one else has got to be involved an this person had the power to make the change. |
