Hate being lied to. Divorced and got rid of a partner because I was lied to.
The only time it's ever ok to lie to me is when I ask does my bum look big in this, then the answer is always No! |

I lie to my kids everytime they lose a tooth or at Christmas. ... is that unacceptable??? I think sometimes its Ok to say what people want to hear rather than the hard ugly truth providing no one will get hurt by it. |

Thats to some extent what I was thinking is the hard truth justified if it could unnecessarily hurt someone. |

Tooth fairy, santa clause etc etc...
Also, like has been mentioned, you'd never tell someone they looked ugly on their wedding day, or that their baby is the ugliest wee bugger you've ever seen, so kinder to tell a wee fib for that reason.
Also, if a friend is on a night out, and you meet them and they ask if their dress looks good, no point pissing on their parade and spoiling their night if its bloody awful. |

"Yes, the small social lies such as telling a bride on her wedding day that she looks stunning even if you think she looks like a pig in a frock. Some truths just don't need articulating."
i agree, my friend is pregnant and has gained loads of weight, besides her bump, she keeps asking me of she looks fat, its obviously bothering her, but i wouldn't dream of saying yes |

On three occasions someone expressed what they considered the truth to me at that moment in time. The damage caused by 'those truths' is far greater than if tgey were not expressed or by being 'less truthful' in that moment.
The consequences of those 'truths' are yet to be felt in full, however I think the person might spend the rest of their life wishing they had been less 'truthful'. |

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
I once told someone their baby was lovely when he was actually so ugly he made me draw back in horror. Not sure she would have appreciated the truth at the time.
As long as the lie isn't completely obvious (yes, you look lovely; I promise I'm being faithful; I'll do the dishes) I'm fine. |

I lie to my mum everytime she babysits while we go to swinger clubs. She insists on knowing full details of where we went and what we did and I really don't think she needs to know the truth. ..... Just one example. I guess I'm a really bad person judging by some reactions on here. Well so be it. I happen to think that the truth wouldn't sit very well with her at all. |

We all lie, even to ourselves, so pretending that this is not the case is dishonest from the start. For a fab meet Id be unhappy if someone was not really interested sexually but had other motivations. Likewise if their pics bore little resemblance to how they are, but they had said they were very recent. Some lies can just be incredibly wasteful of others time, as well as the liar's efforts. Id also be very unhappy if anyone was put into a dangerous situation for themselves due to another's lies. |

no problem. ...I just think that sometimes people can be very quick to jump in with their supposed high morals. I hope they never have to lie about anything. |

When my father was taken very ill once my mum was very distressed and asked me if he was going to die, at that moment I thought he was but I said "no, of course not" and she calmed down and was able to cope with events much more readily.....are people saying I should have told the truth as I saw it at that moment?
I'm happy to say that I was telling the truth but you see what I'm saying. |

Well it would be a lie in itself to say I've never lied.
Everyone has a different idea of what lies are acceptable and what aren't.
For example someone mentioned earlier that they wouldn't tell a friend if she looked hideous before a night out ~ whilst I understand they don't want to hurt that persons feelings ~ I would preferred to be told so I could rectify my choice of dress.
We are all different which is reflected in the answers given. |

Absolutely I've lied !! Diversions to keep surprises , santa, the "it's so lovely to see you " (when its last person you wanted to clap eyes on),where hubby and I were when we have a meet etc etc . Theses are more socially tactful lies rather than the 100% brutal truth .Think there's times where tact is the more graceful and appropriate option .
If some here think that makes me a bad person then I can live with that, and with my own continence .

Finally came across the correct answer when a woman asks if her bum looks big in a dress - you say "No, but your tits do!" |

No lies are ever 'little' when it comes to partners.
Santa is a universal one to keep the magic alive - if you need to lie to keep your magic alive in a relationship then its wrong - in my opinion.
I know my ass is big - just how Will likes it! and THAT reaction cannot lie! lol

Over the rainbow, under the bridge |
Those lies which are told to save people's feelings are acceptable.
Why anyone would insist on total truthfulness I have no idea.
As the quote goes: A truth that's told with bad intent beats all the lies you can invent. |

It depends on the lie and the reason behind why the lying surely?
I put my hands up to lying on various matters too. I would rather sometimes not cause unnecessary pain or suffering by being honest. |

I just came clean recently and the best thing that happened. I was living the lie for a few years and had been caught but now we both swing independently and are having fun and honesty is the best policy. |

Well said , if we told the truth every time we were asked why Sabrina didn't want to play with someone , there would be an awful lot of unnecessarily hurt egos on fab |

Reading this HOLY FUCK! Are you lot trying to tell us Santa isn't real?!
Seriously though it's all about intent. A white lie to save someones feeling is fine but a lie to take advantage of someone is a very different thing or a lie where people end up getting hurt.
The most dangerous lies are the ones people tell themselves so much that they start to believe them. We've seen friends fall to this one trying to convince themselves so much of one thing they forget who they are. |

There is a lot of irony on here as hardly everyone is truthful about age, location and name on profiles yet some hate lies! Honesty is a good trait but really its not an intelligent thing to be 100% truthful all the time. |

The intent is what matters... There's a difference between deceit and sparing someones feelings for harmless reasons. Having an affair is deceit, deciding not to tell your mum you're off out for a gang bang whilst she baby sits is just common sense! |

I lie every day !!!! Usually when asked "how are you"? Unless its my doctor asking I usually say "good ta" or "I'm fine thanks" the truth would be a long list of things that are problems for me in one way or an other ! I think if we looked at an average week we all lie way more often than we realise !!! But most are fibs ! Not out and out lies ! |

I don't agree, it has nothing to do with intelligence, it is simply a choice. There are always ways round if you want them, for most people it is not important enough to make the extra effort, that's their choice, but if it is - it can be done.
If someone asks 'How are you?' and I am having a rough week, I don't have to say 'Fine thank you' - there are a myriad of other choices - I can say 'Oh trust me you don't want to know!!' with a big grin or somesuch. |

Firstly...pig in a frock!!!!! LMFAO!!!!!
Yes, there are always lies we need to tell to grease the wheels of society....laughing at your boss' rubbish jokes, smiling when the mother in law is visiting, does my bum look big??? It's good manners.
To be blunt and truthful, that is to say, to not censor your inner thoughts, and to act without any degree of empathy and consideration for others feelings is uncivilised, impolite and can be unnecessarily hurtful to others.
So tell me......does my bum look big in my pictures?????
