I have hit back button 4 times before posting to your post!
Without looking at your profile, I would assume that you had history lessons in school?
At the very least you would have been told about the Tudors and Stuarts & their interconnections...if you haven't I would be happy to chat with you education department and slap them on your behalf, or mine, because I find it shameful in you not knowing the basics!

That's probably little to do with what I was taught at school, but more to do with my memory. Either that or my total lack of interest in religion.
I'm not ashamed to ask questions on things I don't know or don't remember though, I'm sorry you find it shameful.
But my history teacher was a total wanker so feel free to go slap him. |

Gimme his name, bad teacher lol, am joking!
Henry V111 made it religion, hence the need for Priest holes, just shame your teachers didn't make it interesting enough as it was history and religion combined, as are most things, alas.
( Oh - I am Scottish! ) |

I'm pretty sure naming and shaming are frowned upon. Never mind he's likely dead by now, he was ancient back then.
Who's Henry VIII?!
(Kidding!) |

we used to own a pub in lincolnshire, dated back to 1257, that had a priest hole in one of the upstairs rooms and it dropped down behind what is now the inglenook fireplace.
the entrance was boarded up but we never had the nerve to open it and look inside, there were far too many strange happenings in the place as it was without unleashing more
also, by the front door was a hatch that was a coffin drop as there was not enough room to get one down the stairs feckin spooky place it is even though we dont believe in ghosts |

Priest hole is a name sometimes used for any hidden chamber or passageway. Some were used just to hide valuables from the tax man or other thieves so not actually big enough to get into.
Also a priest is the name for a cosh or black jack typically used to dispatch fish. So not necessarily connected to religion or good king Henry VIII |
