Prince William has signed up to fly and air ambulance for two years. He is said to have described as giving him a sense of purpose and what he sees as real public duty. The reports also state his salary will be donated to charity in full.
How important is a sense of purpose in life?

Very if you are a Porpoise looking for a date 
It's nice to see him doing a job, but frankly I'd like to see him spending a month in a series of jobs, such as shelf stacking, factory work, care work and so on. I think it will benefit him more. |

Massively important, and I respect him for actually going and doing a job, plus the money going to Charity will hopefully make a very real difference to people's lives. |

I agree with all of that.
I see so many people without a sense of purpose though. I've had times when I have lost my sense of purpose and know how soul destroying it is doing things because you have to and not because it fulfills you.

Why in the world would you want that ?
He had a skill that will be used to benefit others. It would be a travesty if anyone chose to stack shelves rather than use a skill gained through considerable expense to the taxpayer.
I'm ambivalent re royalty but the new generation seem to have copped on that they need to evolve or die out... |

I think the royals have a purpose anyway
ambassadors and all that
and its a hard job,when the Queen visited here she was on her feet from morning til night,smiling chatting,shes in her 80s
but until him n kate take on the job its good hes doin it |

I know Diana used to take him and his brother on secret visits to charities where they did volunteer doing very mundane things.
The documentary showing his gap year showed him cleaning, cooking and working with children. Living as everyone else with whom he was sharing.
I think he has been as real and ordinary as his position, face and security will allow.

Good for William,Id like to say that I hope to be seeing him often in his work but that would mean someone is very sick so I shall just say he has picked a fantastic job to give him a sense of purpose |

The Air Ambulance recently saved the life of a friend of mine after a motorcycle crash and would have tried to save the life of my brother, had there been anything they could do.
It's a charity I support wholeheartedly. I volunteered at a charity event to raise funds for them in Spring.
Good for William. He seems to have a good head and a good heart. |

We can't all have the luxury of finding employment which satisfies our personal goals or feelings of emotional self-worth...
For me an overriding sense of purpose is exemplified by every selfless individual willing to work in any job which generates an income which is then used to provide food shelter and the basics necessities for those in their care… ..

no, he's not on the civil list (as was). He has income from his father via the Duchy of Cornwall and inheritance from his mother's estate. |

How many other brothers in the real world get to fly bloody helicopters?

I like that. We (a group of us) are in a very soul destroying situation and will be for a long time yet. But that is a very good point. We aren't totally worthless. Thank you Soxy. x |

Not everyone can see that as purpose. They might see it as a duty or a burden that they have no choice about and cannot put down.
However, I agree that it is selfless and worth a lot.

he seems like a nice lad and I think its really good that hes doing it and giving the money to charity.
