Kaka did elbow the guy in the chest, so a yellow for that would have been mandatory. Yellow cards cannot be contested in this world cup so Kaka will miss at least the last group game. Having said that, Brazil have a multitude of goal scoring talent and Ronaldo for portugal is on a yellow too so he'll have to be careful when they play Brazil. I'm looking forward to that match as much as I am for the England one.
One bonus though, the French are in disarray and have refused to train today - at least the French are consistent when it comes to striking lol |

Today's matches:
Group G:
12.30 BST Portugal (3) -v- North Korea (105)
Group H:
15.00 BST Chile (18) -v- Switzerland(24)
19.30 BST Spain (2) -v- Honduras (38)
~
Portugal should win comfortably against the North Koreans. Should. 3-1.
~
Chile & Switzerland are close in terms of ranking so should be a good game, if they come out to win and not settle for a point. 2-1 Chile.
~
This is Spain's 'banker' game and nothing short of a comfortable win will be good enough. Honduras only conceded once against Chile and can clear contain a prolonged attack but I can't see them holding off a Spanish team bristling with talent and a point to prove. 3-0 |

"Kaka! That was no shot to the face with the elbow! "
No it wasn't, but if you study the footage closely you cna see clearly that Kaka saw the Ivory Coast player approaching from behind (he glances back briefly) and sticks his elbow out and catches him in the chest. It was a silly thing to do, like Beckham flicking a leg out on Simeone, and he's paid the price for it. |

It's pissing down in South Africa and all those Portuguese stars with coiffeured hairstyles are looking slightly bedraggled hehehe ... even Ronaldo has lost his 'slick' (I think it's in a puddle behind him wherever he is on the pitch) The Koreans look the same as they always do! |

why did the ivory coast player clutch his face though as if it was his face that had been caught?,the ref did not see the incident as he was looking at the play directly in front of him and did not even consult the assistant for his version of events so what he base his decision on?,just the site of the ivory coast player lying, nay writhing on the pitch and kaka walking away totally unconcerned. |

He did it to get Kaka sent off, which is precisely what happened. Players should know that if they even so much as blink at an opponent these days, they're likely to drop like a sack of spuds and writhe around in simulated agony. Kaka knew this and got caught out by it when he raised his elbow. Beckham knew when he flicked his leg out at Simeone, and got caught out by it too. |

They aint through yet. They gotta play Chile on Friday whilst Switzerland play Honduras.
At the moment Group H is as follows:
Chile 6pts, Gd:2
Spain 3pts, Gd:1
Switz 3pts, Gd:0
Hondu 0pts, Gd:-3
~
If Chile beat Spain then Spain's goal difference will come down and if Switzerland beat Honduras, as expected, then their GD will go up, if both Spain & Switzerland end up on exactly the same points AND goal difference then it comes down to how they did against each other - and Switzerland beat Spain 1-0.
A draw with Chile and a Switzerland win against Honduras sees the Spanish go home early. |

Hmmm D-Day for the Froggies today...
Tricky one for 'em tbh...
If Uruguay and Mexico play out a draw the the Froggies are out.
If Mexico beat Uruguay by two clear goals, France MUST beat South Africa by 4 clear goals to go through in 2nd spot and avoid a toss up to decide 2nd place.
If Uruguay beat Mexico by 2 clear goals, France MUST beat South Africa by 3 clear goals to go through in 2nd spot.
If Mexico and France end up level right across the group, ie. pts, goals for/against/difference then it comes down to how they played each other, which Mexico won 2-0, and France go out.
If France lose or draw, they're out.
Basically, they're fucked. |

If South Africa score again and don't concede then they go through in 2nd place. ... plus... if France don't score then they will have scored 1 less, ie. ZERO GOALS, than when they went out in the group stages in 2002. I'm giggling like a madman here.

Kaka's sending off was a joke and if Brazil appealed it would have been over turned, although it does leave him card-free for the knockout stages hence no appeal. To say it wad a deserving red card is silly.
Did anyone see the Honduran player who went down 9 seconds after Villa nudged him in theface as if he had been shot? disgraceful! i thought Rivaldos ban a few years ago would have put a stop to the play acting but its getting worse...

Don’t know much about football, but kaka’s sending off wasn’t really a joke, he elbowed the guy in the chest and surely that was a foul??? Just because he didn’t get him in the face doesn’t mean its ok, what was a joke though is the way the opponent was play-acting and rolled about holding his face in agony. |

Fifa can implement a 1, 2 or 3 match ban for a sending off. The length of ban is determined by the offence committed in the first place but can also take into account the player or the team's insistence that it was unwarranted when video evidence shows the offence to be a bookable offence.
Kaka was on a yellow already from a previous game. Another booking and it meant an automatic one match ban. He DID elbow the guy intentionally but it was in the chest, not the face. That's a bookable offence and regardless of whether he was sent off for it or not he deserved a one match ban. If Brazil had appealed, the ban could have been increased, so they decided to take the 1 match ban and shut up - they got off lightly in my opinion, as in the Premiership a straight red card is a 3 match ban. |

England have this annoying habit of struggling in matches we should win easily and putting up a great performance in the really big games. Let's hope that we're true to form on Sunday and give the Germans another bloody nose like we did in Munich.
Interestingly, we'll be the 'away' team so we'll be wearing red and they'll be in white a la 1966. Methinks someone will be looking for some payback lol. |

Oddly the Germ's don't think about 1966 in the same way we do; their equivalent is (1974 I think) Germany v Holland (Netherlands, whatever). But then again who rates as important the finals they lose? |

I don't believe England are unquestionably going to be the winners and from here on in every win is a bonus in my book.... but I'll be willing them on every second and hoping they play the best they can and do us all proud. There is no shame in not winning if you have given it your all. |

I quite agree. As a Man U fan I don't even give the Champions League finals we've lost a moments thought, but Bayern Munich 1999/2000 is one I'll remeber for the rest of my life; where I was, who I was with, how I celebrated Solskaer's winning goal in extra time and seeing German players crumple to floor in resignation that they *know* there simply isn't enough time remaining to get an equaliser. My fervent wish/hope is that I'll get to experience this feeling of total euphoria with England. |

"England have this annoying habit of struggling in matches we should win easily and putting up a great performance in the really big games. Let's hope that we're true to form on Sunday and give the Germans another bloody nose like we did in Munich.
Interestingly, we'll be the 'away' team so we'll be wearing red and they'll be in white a la 1966. Methinks someone will be looking for some payback lol. "
lets all hope (and a few prayers will not go amiss either!)that we can get it together for that match,we stumbled and stuttered at group games in 1966 and again in 1990 but got over that and progressed quite nicely thank you!,let's hope we can again in 2010. |

I've geot everything that can be crossed well and truly crossed and if I had two cocks I'd cross them too lol..
If we make it past the Germans it should set up an encounter with Mexico or Argentina; get past them and it's probably Italy or Spain; make it past them and we will most likely face Brazil or Holland in the final. Win that and we can truly say we've beaten the best and ARE the best.
Tall order but hey, someone's gotta win the thing so why not us. |

Before the tournament started I was really optomistic about our chances, especially since we qualified so well.
But typical England, they certainly put us fans through the mill, but as Wishy says, if we win it this year, we have got to beat the best of the best.
Come on England, the World Cup really starts on Sunday for us |

Today's matches:
Group G:
15.00 BST North Korea -v- Ivory Coast
15.00 BST Portugal -v- Brazil
Group H:
19.30 BST Chile -v- Spain
19.30 BST Switzerland -v- Honduras
~
Last chance for the Spanish.
Here's the permutations:
A Chilean win sees them top the group on 9pts and 2nd place up for grabs between Spain and Switzerland.
If Spain lose and Swizerland draw, Spain are out.
So what happens if Spain beat Chile:
Spain & Chile will both be on 6pts.
If Spain win by more than 2 clear goals they'll top the group. Less than two and Chile win the group.
Throw a Swiss win into the mix and we have a situation whereby if Spain lose or draw with Chile then Spain are out, and the Swiss go through in 2nd spot.
If both Spain & Switzerland win their matches Switzerland will need to win by two goals more than Spain win by to go through (Spain have a goal diff of +1, Switzerland's is +0).
In the event of an absolute tie between Spain & Switzerland in terms of pts and goal difference, it then comes down to goals scored, which will put Spain through.
However, if Spain win 1-0, and Switzerland win 2-0, then both teams will be on exactly the same points, goal diff AND goals scored. It will then come down to how they fared against each other, and Switzerland won that encounter 1-0. Spain go out.
As for Group G:
It's a non-starter. Portugal's superior 9-goal difference over Ivory Coast makes it highly unlikely that the Ivory Coast can go through unless Portual lose by an extraordinary margin to Brazil and Ivory Coast win by an equally exrtaordinary margin against North Korea. 5-0 in both games is what I call extraordinary, but I can't see Brazil putting 5 past Portugal AND Ivory Coast putting 5 past the Koreans.
Brazil to top the group on 9pts, Portugal 2nd on 4pts. |

I made a mistake in my analysis of Group H earlier.
If Spain win 1-0 and Switzerland win 2-0 then they both go through and Chile go out! Switzerland will go through as group winners due to the 1-0 result they got against Spain. |

Throughout all the England games Rooney passed the ball back to the opposition more than he passed it to one of our own.... it matters not where someone is standing on a patch of grass... you'd expect a pro to at least be able to pass the fecking ball to the right coloured shirt. |

" The two German players you mentioned are very good players and could do that to anyone. Slovenia arent a world class, not even a top 20 side, and Capello isnt proven as a international manager, that was his 1st job, club football and international football are a class apart, asking Gerrard to play left wing isnt as simple as you may think, askin Rooney to play a different way than he had all season isnt easy as you think, its not just them two, Milner,Lampard and Defoe all got asked to play a different way than they had all season,it was proved against mighty USA,Algeria,Slovenia and now Germany it didnt work |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big) | |
i just cannot work out why when we needed goals the manager brought on emile heskey who has never ever been a prolific goalscorer at club level!,(10 goals a season is very good for him!)we had an inept lacklustre rooney who did not have a clue what to do out there, yet the manager took defoe off for heskey and left rooney on!,why?.
surely a much better bet would have been for crouch and defoe to play upfront together like thay do at club level.
crouch has a far better goals per game record than any present england player but did not even play 10 minutes worth of football during the tournament.
and wright phillips is a joke!,all he ever does is run into opposing players in the vain hope of getting a free kick.
too mamy players all off colour at the same time and a distinct lack of midfield ideas. |

I've never rated lampard and have said so on a few occasions. He's greedy and never thinks of passing to a player in a better goalscoring position but prefers to shoot from 20 yards out in his personal quest for glory. He may be a good player for Chelsea, but for England - he's just not good enough.
Having said that, they were ALL a shower of shit out there and I think they ought to slip back into the country quietly and shut the fuck up - about anything. |

I've calmed down a tad now lol ..
Still pissed off but no more than after every other tournament I've watched and prayed for England to do well only to be bitterly disappointed again and again...
So what went wrong?
How did we go from being on a super-high from the qualifiers to not having a clue once at the finals?
A few possibilities exist..
** Terry was the captain throughout the qualifiers and was stripped off it as we all know. That unsettled the team for sure as it divided the dressing room.
** We have too many domestic competitions going on at home and our players were simply worn out by the time they got to Africa. We need to have a winter break if only to put us on the same playing season as most of European counterparts. The Germans were unmistakenly fresher as they'd had a break in the winter AND they do not have a League cup to contend with at home either.
** Capello changed the way we play and played key players out of position. He also stuck rigidly to the 4-4-2 formation when any football fan knows full well that a 4-5-1 format puts Rooney up front on his own where he *knows* that every ball coming in from the wings is intended to reach him. That's how to get the best out of him. A 4-5-1 layout would have packed the midfield and left our back four in tight formation, the effect of which would have prevented the German long ball from dissecting our defence so efficiently.
Every other country plays top flight football and pays their players as well as our players are paid, yet they do better than us year after year, again and again, so premiership wages isn't the issue here. Our lads aren't complacent nor are they uncaring or passionless in an England shirt. They're simply knackered from a season that is too long and packed with too many games played at a super-fast pace, and they were carrying injuries that they did not have enough time to recover from.
I think most of us knew we wouldn't do well over there but tried not to face up to it, or hope we were wrong. The truth of the matter is that winning our group was crucial as it meant we'd avoid teams like Germany until later in the competition and playing Ghana in the Round of 16 would have been a much better game for us to build confidence from and take us into the quarters to meet Uruguay. Finishing second in our group had a knock on effect and we were playing catch-up from that point onward. We should have suspected what was to come when we not only failed to beat algeria, we didn't even score against them, and that was our 'banker' game! We needed to put 3 or 4 past them, get Rooney/Lampard on the score sheet which would have driven them to score more. It didn't happen and now we're out. Again.
I hope Capello stays on as manager but he has got to understand the players we have and how best to utilise them. A rigid 4-4-2 formation against any opposition will be, and has been, mercilessly exposed as a weakness. We have to be able to adapt to the different teams we play and change tactics accordingly.
pssst.. To the FA:
I am available if Capello decides to go! |

If their performance tonight is anything to go by I can't see anyone stopping them. Saying that, they struggled to break Portugal down where it mattered but had plenty of chances.
I've said before that I fancy Holland to do something this time out and I hope they do beat Brazil in the quarters, if they do I think they'll have a clear run to the final - versus Spain, who only need to overcome the fat cheating wanker and his team. |

In an ideal world the ref should have simply awarded the goal under the circumstances but a rule has to be drawn somewhere and that's it I'm afraid. I do feel for Ghana but ultimately the best team won on the night as Ghana just didn't have that killer finish to their game. They'll improve I'm sure and Pele's prediction that an African team will win the world cup in the early part of the 21st century might just come to pass. |

"My heart went out to Ghana last night. They played with such passion, heart and soul…. and were truly robbed.
Only by themselves Polo. Missing a penalty in the dying seconds of a big game like that. He'll replay that moment every day for the rest of his life.
They shouldn't have had to take the penalty.
In an ideal world the ref should have simply awarded the goal under the circumstances but a rule has to be drawn somewhere and that's it I'm afraid. I do feel for Ghana but ultimately the best team won on the night as Ghana just didn't have that killer finish to their game. They'll improve I'm sure and Pele's prediction that an African team will win the world cup in the early part of the 21st century might just come to pass."
african football has went back, since roger millas, cameroon.but i do think an african team will win it soon. |

i dont see an African side winning the world cup. They were getting much better but with the exception of Ghana and a few Ivory Coast individuals, the standards this year have went backwards.
Whats strange is that Egypt win almost every African tournament these days but they werent at the World Cup
Germany today were very good, again they pick teams apart who dont have a set defending midfield player. Marcherano was caught out just as Gareth Barry was chasing the ball and not sitting in the middle watching Sweinstiger, something Spain will have to think about as Busquets isnt much of a holding player
Awesome day today with Spain and Paraguay tonight

Paraguay -v- Spain
~
What a game. It's gone from a real nothing of a match to Paraguay missing a penalty and then Spain getting one a minute later. Alonso scored but the ref ordered it retaken for encroachment and then Alonso missed it!
Still 0-0 |

As I predicted. Holland in the final.
Tomorrow's game should be a real head to. Can't wait.
Well done the Dutch, well deserved win. |

"my tenner on holland still looks good.the dutch are due a bit of luck in this competition."
As the commentator just said, "The greatest team never to have won it."
I just about remember 74 & 78 and felt really sorry for them. |

I remember 74 and 78 as well lol and sadly luck got nothing to do with it. Its down to who plays the best football. Oh and that tenner is heading my way lol They might be a great team but not as great as )) |

D-Day for you. If Spain play as well as they can Germany will struggle tonight. I've watched all Germany's games and when they're winning they're awesome but when they're under pressure they look really dodgy. If Spain get the first goal Germany will collapse.
I'm still backing a Holland v Spain final though. Holland to win the cup. |

not that interested in who wins now , but for some reason im looking foward to the match tonight
its taken a bit of time to get over the dissapointment of being knocked out but now content to watch world class football in action
in some strange way i seem more interested in who loses as to who wins |

Told ya so!
Germany 0-1 Spain
~
Now for a Holland win on Sunday, and they've never played each other before in any capacity.
Plus, this means a new name on the trophy come Sunday night.
2-1 to Holland I think. |

Prophectially, I planted two lines of flowers in my borders in May before the tournament had even started, and they're now in full bloom.
I have a solid line of RED petunias, and, behind them, a solid line of ORANGE marigolds.
Wish I'd realised at the time and stuck a tenner on it lol |

I dunno what could be more annoying than watching Germany play AND listening to Moyles talking about it at the same time! |

I have to admit some bits did get annoying... but it was odd. Sometimes it was like having the lads around and listening to them, some bits were funny.... but it did give a completely different feel to the game. |

That was to soapy btw, not you polo.
As for Moyles, if ever a man loved himself to the point that if he could he'd get down on one knee and propose to himself - he wouldn't hesitate.
Not his No.1 fan here lol |
