As a teenager Kaolin & Morphine used to be worse than having a bad stomach! The taste is foul. I used to dread my Mum getting the bottle of it out of the medecine cupboard.
And tcp on a spoonful of sugar for a sore throat, but it never masked the taste of tcp.
Which remedies/medecines did you dread having or still dislike now? |

I used to love malt and cod liver oil. And really liked penicillin banana medicine when I had tonsilitis. I used to be upset when it was amoxycillin instead because the pink medicine tasted rank. |

Was it pink? It sounds like the stuff, Pripsen, that I am remembering. |

"Clove oil for toothache... blech!
Still use that now. Tends to numb the tongue more than the tooth though! "
Agreed! Think it works to be fair, but I don't half hate the stuff! |

OMG living in Germany it was quite usual to have to feed the kids it with each new outbreak of worms. I used to give the drinks to my kids while they were in their evening bath ........ just so I could get them to drink it without spitting it all over the carpets when they found out what it was.
I can still hear to this day the wails from my daughter shouting " oh no not the raspberry milk-shake again" followed by retching sounds and sobbing. |

"My Polish grandmother used to put iodine on everything from the tiniest scratch to gaping flesh wounds. It certainly worked but fuuuuuuuck me it hurt..."
I cut myself on coral a few years back, I'd never had Iodine put on anything. They stuck some on my foot and I nearly hit the ceiling ! No-one is coming near me with that again! |

My worst memory of it is when my grandmother bent me over her old enamel bath and removed several air rifle pellets from my arse cheeks using needle nose pliars that had been sterilized over a candle. That in itself was painful but the application of iodine afterwards bought pain to a whole new level!... |

"I used to have these awful travel sickness pills....little round black ones that tasted so rank, that within 5 mins of the journey, I was being sick everywhere *shudders*"
I remember the ones my parents gave me were brown. Crushed up into a glass of orange cordial. Can't abide orange even now |

There was a raspberry flavoured painkiller liquid, I guess it was the precursor to calpol. I suffered with a lot of earaches when I was a child, I still get a fair few now.
All that liquid did was teach me not to trust anything that said 'flavoured' cos it tasted nothing like raspberries! |

My mother just use to poltice every damn thing that was a blister boil wart etc.. I cant remember what it was called, but came in a tin, she use to boil the tin in water! More harm than good I got 3rd degree burns from it ( think she might of had to wait for it to cool down but she didnt), oh the thought still makes me cringe! I think she hated me as a child.. |

The threat of a 2nd slap to stop me crying from the 1st one, never worked. Hated my mum doing my hair with a metal toothed head lice comb over a sheet of newspaper, probably one of the main reasons I don't have much hair now |

I loved the smell of calamine lotion... which is just as well because we were caked in it a lot of the time in Summer as sunburn was 'just one of those things' (no such thing as sunscreen back then)
I remember I got head-lice once - my mum's reaction was to have my lovely long locks chopped off so I resembled a miniature American Marine then drenched that was left with nit lotion which stank like a particularly nasty creosote and burned like f***. It had to be left on all night too - I could hardly sleep with the stench.
I never got head-lice again though - word must've gotten around in the head-louse community of what would happen if they set foot on my head - no self respecting bug was going to risk being doused in that concoction! |
