Never, ever, ever take your car to Quick Shit for an MOT or even to change a bulb. They're famous for inventing problems, poor workmanship and generally ripping people off. |

The one and only time I ever used them... They repaired a puncture and didn't put the wheel back on properly... 2 days later driving along the road... wheel comes right off the car. Never gone near them again! |

I have no choice for tyres sadly as the fleet contract is with them.
I don't pay - but it's a piss take when your dealer finds a tear in a tyre during an MOT, has a rack full of new treads on site - but has to wait a day and a half for 'Kwik Fit Mobile' to deliver one - even though the local branch is 500m away from the dealership!
I guess pushing a round wheel up the road or chucking one in your boot is too much these days!
Fuckers!!

As one who used to be a mechanic I totally agree.
Went there once and we saw one guy literally tell a foreign lady that the squeaks coming from the brakes, were entirely because the brakes need stripping regularly in heavy rain!!
Along with the other peeps in the waiting room - none of us could believe what we were witnessing.
Shocking.
They'll rip you a peach if they can. |

A mate of mine bought his car to me after having the rear shoes replaced by a Quick Shit garage. I was horrified to find that they'd smashed the drums with a steel hammer to release them and badly cracked them, failed to fit a new spring kit and completely missing a leaking brake cylinder. All that is basic mechanics and his car was given back to himin a shockingly dangerous state.
I've also been told stories of cars failing MOT tests because their special machine detected play in the steering column lock! No such machine exists and its not even part of the MOT!
The whole franchise wants shutting down... |

As a tester myself I'd give the following advice to motorists:
1. Find a reputable garage you trust, esp by word of mouth if possible.
2. As you can charge up to £54.85 for an initial MOT be wary of the really cut price MOT's - they have to make money from somewhere.
3. If it fails on anything less than 'bits' like light bulbs I always give them the option to see it for themselves on the ramp or get it repaired elsewhere as long as it's done properly.
4. As any tester knows the MOT test is a bit of a joke in parts and testers have their own little quirks - a car actually has to be quite bad to fail.
5. If in doubt about the outcome you are under no obligation to have any work done. Tell them when you book it in. ALSO THEY CANNOT STOP YOU FROM TAKING THE VEHICLE AWAY no matter what it fails on.
6. Personally the most expensive repair we've ever done to get a car through an MOT was £400 inc VAT. I don't understand how people fall for bills bigger than that.
Anything else let me know and I'll do my best to answer. |

This is a common play on words - they'll say the brakes are 'worn' - of course they are they wear from the moment you set off when it's new - the real question is are they worn to excess or completely fecked? |

That depends on what tyre it is and size - most normal quality tyres probably £60 - £100 fitted and balanced but if it was a sports tyre of an Audi or similar then easily up to that price.
(a full set of tyres for a Bugatti circa £20,000 |

I got scammed there many years ago when I first started driving, I wan incredibly naieve I went in for new tyre and came out with new tyres, brakes and exhaust all paid for on my new quick fit credit card! Never ever again on principle as the car had been M.O.T'd 2 weeks before and only had a recomendation to change the tyres. |

Used the same garage now for over 10 years, they're great and I get them loads of custom from recommendations. They only charge me £35 for an MOT (others pay a bit more) and I can take a car in and check with them if something specific needs attending to for an MOT - mostly I do my own cars and make sure that all the obvious things are ok. Things I'm not equipped to do, I get them to do and their rates are only around £25 per hour (for cash). |

I recently had a new tyre fitted at Kwik fit, it was the spare wheel lucky for me the next day I was clearing out the boot, and just lifted the board to take a look at the new tyre, and noticed they had fitted the wrong size it should have been a 205/55 and they had fitted a 205/50 maybe I got the young 17 year old apprentice lol. |

Spare tyres are not part of the MOT - I advise them for being knackered but can't fail as you might simply be transporting it as cargo. |

It surprises me that people still get scammed or can't even carry out basic checks themselves given that all the information they ever need is freely available online. Including the MOT regulations. |

Take it back and get them to sort it - when we have an insurance assessor to look at crash damage they DO inspect the tyres carefully. If the are not roadworthy or MOT standard it could (and quite rightly) be grounds not to pay out and an incorrect aspect ratio (the 50 vs 55) is technically a failure. |

If it doesn't do many miles rotate the tyres front to back - otherwise they never get warm to drive off the moisture and end up cracking badly, esp on the inner sidewall of the rears. Low mileage can be worse than high mileage. |

Check tyre pressures, Oil level and coolant then give it a controlled ragging - esp the brakes - it won't do it any harm at all. |

The original MOT cert is valid until the date it expires no matter what - it won't be overidden. Usefully though if it passed the new one it gives you a full 12 month plus what was left on the old one. Win win.
This is great as you then have time to sort any fails out and still be able to drive on the old ticket but hardly anyone knows about this trick. |

Which computer do they mean ?- there are back ups where you can test and issue a temp handwritten document if it's the VTS device itself (MOT Computer) but if it's the emissions comp then yes they're snookered until it's sorted. |

My dad told me this, I always get it MOT'd early as you can get it done up to a month before it's due and then you just have a 13month MOT |

The comment about the parts for their computer and not being able to do the MOT may be correct.
All MOT's are now generated and monitored by the garage computer and sent to the DVLA so if the computer isn't working they cannot MOT the vehicle.
As for the rest of the posts, I have a mechanic I have used for 25 years so I don't go anywhere else. |

Thankyou people...but you didn't help as I lost the bet....but, the good thing is I only have to give a blow job which I enjoy.
I thought as it was a fail then the car is not roadworthy so can't be on the road.
As it is all computerised now, would it come up as being a fail if the police stopped you or does the fail not get registered ? |

I just researched this and found this on gov.uk
"You’ll get a ‘notification of failure’ from the test centre if your vehicle fails the test. The failure will be recorded in the secure central MOT database.
You can still drive your vehicle if it fails the test and its existing MOT certificate is still valid (ie you got it tested before the expiry date). However, you might be stopped by police and prosecuted if your vehicle is unroadworthy."

It's not so much the testing that requires a computer but (as I understand it) your test can now only be registered with the MOT central (forgotten their proper name) via the computer - so no computer, no certificate (pass or fail). |

This is something of a grey area which was my implication about the MOT being a bit of a joke before.
The MOT test is literally a 'minimum standard' - the DVSA's own words to me. Roadworthy refers to the regs the Police use which are different.
e.g. I test a car with 1.6mm left on the front brake pads. That is a pass (but certainly an advisory). So yes it's roadworthy.
Now fill the car up with luggage and set off to Scotland the same day. After 2-3 brake uses the pads are down passed 1.5mm and a fail and unroadworthy.
In short the police can look I think on their ANPR system but their rules are different than mine. |

If my MOT Computer goes down (VTS Device) I can still test by registering it by phone with DVSA in Swansea - and phoning them the result afterwards then give you a handwritten result to be exchanged for free when it's working again.
This gets complicated as there are 3 ways of doing this
Standalone, Fallback, Emergency. |

I had a fellow members of the AROC come to me a couple of weeks ago. His car (an Alfa 156 JTDm Sport) was misfiring badly. An Alfa dealer told him (after putting the car on Examiner for the sum of £80) that he needed 4 new injectors, a new inlet manifold and new EGR valve. I ran a diagnostic (using multiecuscan) and found a missfire on cylinder-3 and reduced EGR flow.
I removed the EGR valve, it was sooted up so I cleaned it and free'd the solenoid up, vacuumed the soot from the inlet manifold and cleaned the MAP sensor.
After that I pulled the injector (thank dog for slide hammers!) There was nothing wrong with it. I then checked the wiring plug, the terminals were covered in oil and dirt!
So I fixed his car in two hours using nothing but carb cleaner some servisol super 10 a vacuum cleaner and a few tools.
Total cost of the job was less than a tenner and he bought me some beers.
Main dealers are often the biggest, least knowledgeable rip off merchants out there... |

He's coming back next week and I'm changing all his fluids. I'll be using Miller's 5w40 ester blended oil. It's a low mileage car, literally been used for going shopping and short journeys. As you're bound to be aware, that kills modern diesel engines. I'll also delete the ECU's learned parameters and take it for a proper Italian tune up along the M1 |

So I fixed his car in two hours using nothing but carb cleaner some servisol super 10 a vacuum cleaner and a few tools.
Total cost of the job was less than a tenner and he bought me some beers.
Main dealers are often the biggest, least knowledgeable rip off merchants out there...
Was it filled with Low SAPS oil? if not they clog in no time.
He's coming back next week and I'm changing all his fluids. I'll be using Miller's 5w40 ester blended oil. It's a low mileage car, literally been used for going shopping and short journeys. As you're bound to be aware, that kills modern diesel engines. I'll also delete the ECU's learned parameters and take it for a proper Italian tune up along the M1 "
The irony of Rudolf Diesel's idea that it be very rugged and simple for poor people / harsh environments now means they're more fragile than a diva.... |

"I should charge for this kind of advice
Infact I tell people allsorts of useful tips that could save them thousands. But they simply aren't interested...
Like 'put oil in the engine'

Sadly very true.
If he has any more issues I'll do what I did with mine. Delete the EGR valve, blank it off, delete the swirl flaps and clean the inlet manifold out. Problem solved. |

Quick fit!!!
I wouldn't let them fit dust caps on my car Nope thank you.
Works van always goes to quick fit. Always a fail usually on breaks
Its only quick fit that have ever changed the disks/pads.
I have been quoted £54.85 for MOT-ing my car
but not at Quick fit :P

"just had a phone call from Quick Fit, sorry sir but cant mot your car this Monday as parts haven't arrive for our computer, wonder how they ever coped in the old days lol"
Check out Halfords as their mot is £35 instead of £54 last year I paid £27.50
But I get your point, in those days they used typewriters or wrote it out maybe |

You're joking right?!
Halfrauds are just as bad as Quick Shit!
£16 for a pair of their regular H7 bulbs. Bulbs that regularly come at the bottom of performance tests?!
I'll continue to use the garage I've used for the past ten years (their MOT's are still only £35). |
