Can be a bit of a pain as ours started going off at 6 oclock so my hubby tried to disconnect it, which wasn't easy, he had to brake the cover and go into the loft to disconnect it, we have got another one down stairs also.
our next door neighbours kept going off one sunday too so her son had to brake it in the end. a man comes to test them every year, he was only here a few weeks ago. |

I just moved into a house with one on the landing. I poked it to test it and it fell off! No idea how to fix it as it has some sort of battery connector inside. Joy. |

Mine runs off a battery but is also connected to the mains..
I make sure I have a spare battery as there's nothing worse than that high pitched beep every minute or so  |

Both myself and my parents have them. There should be a switch on the fuseboard that you can turn off to stop them bleeping until you've changed the battery. |

Completely agree. Mine has beeped a few times one night, I just had to put up with it til next day. The beeping is something I would rather live with than the flip side which could be losing my children if I broke it and then had a fire |

Shouldn't that be 'runs off the mains but has a back up battery'? |

If its a wired one, the battery is a backup in case of a fire melting the electrical supply- the connector will probably be for a PP3 9 volt battery.
If its just a battery unit, bin it an buy a new one- less than £10 |
