Well. I have just agreed to abseil the trafford centre tower in support of a cancer centre having recently lost 3 close friends to the disease.
Im am soooo scared of heights but I have commited now.
Has anyone here ever abseilled before?
If so, any advice for a very scared abseil virgin? |

It's the initial couple of steps and the lean back to the classic abseil position.
Let us know when you do it, we'll come cheer you on |

Yeah I have a few times and the main bit it to keep looking forward and you can either edge down step by step or you can push off the wall and release the rope a little and work your way down that way.
There are normally plenty of centers where you can go to practice dotted around the uk.
Good luck and well done for supporting a great cause. |

You will be fine and as previous folk have said it's the initial leaning over that is the scariest, ive absailed a few times and the trick is don't look down look forward. Once you've mastered that you could always do what I used to to is fast rope out of a helicopter. Good luck anyway. |

Look out to the sides instead of straight down as you'll still have a sense of where you are in the climb without feeling like you'll fall. Take your time and take deep breaths to keep yourself calm. Enjoy it because when you get to the bottom, you'll want to do it again!
I abseiled down a 500ft building in London for charity. Loved it! |

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds) |
Lots of Times, great fun,
My advice
take out massive life insurance before you do it, your will is upto date etc,,
Seriouly listen to the instructors, you ll be tethered to safety ropes so you re very safe, enjoy the rush and well done for supporting a great cause |

Sit down in your harness and walk down the wall.
Make sure that you keep upright so don't lean back and take your time.
By the time you get half way down you'll be loving.
Trust the safety team and your equipment.
Oh and wear big panties, Bridget Jones style, the harness will be tight round your bum and in your crotch.
Enjoy it, I love it. |

Best advice I can give is keep remembering why you are there. The people you will be with are professionals and won't let anything dangerous happen. I would say don't look down but everyone says that one and it don't work. Look in front of you. Look at the suffice you are walking down. If you can, try and imagine that you are up right but being pulled backwards instead of downwards. Hope it help and all the best. Your a brave person to do and an awesome person for why your doing it. (Also I'm a little gelouse lol) x x x |

Imagine you are sat on a toilet in a very small cubicle, with no lock on the door, you sit there and put your feet on the door to stop anyone coming in...... congratulations, you got the right position for abseiling lol!
Keep your feet out in front, if they drop too far you will face-plant the wall, and if they get above your chest height you will end up upside-down.... small steps with your feet wider than shoulder width apart.
It's perfectly safe, the ropes (there will be two, one you control, and one the climbing team control as a safety) are tested to 2000 kilos.
Oh yeah.... remember to breath too lol.... and enjoy, you will get a massive buzz when you finish! |

And....
very important... if you have long hair, tie it up out of the way, do not get it caught in the abseil mechanism! |
