I read this earlier today and it's really starting to piddle me off now. On paper i'm meant to be very bright but i'm buggered if i can solve it! (missing something obvious??)
3 people book a hotel room, it costs £30 for the room so each person pays £10.00 and go to the room.
The receptionist realises it shouldve only been £25.00 not £30.00 so sends a £5.00 refund to the room with the bellboy.
Stood with the fiver the bellboy cant decide how to split it between them so gives each person £1.00 (3 x £1.00) and keeps £2.00 for himself as a tip.
This means that each person got a pound refund and only paid £9.00 for the room. 3 x £9.00 is £27, plus the £2 that the bellboy kept only comes to £29.00 when they started off with £30!
Wheres the other £1.00 gone???????????

the bell boy only kept £2 and gave them £3 change, with the £25 they had already paid thats £28 in total.so they paid £9.33p each and a penny left.i think? |

That old Chestnut!
The false logic comes in the fact that by getting £1 refund everyone in fact paid £9. They didnt. They actually paid £8.33 as that is the £25 split three ways.
Add to that the two pound tip to the Bell boy and that makes 66p each. Meaning everyone has then paid £9.
The change they then get of £1 equals the £10 they originally paid.
Nothing like creative accounting

Nope, its the fact that you don't add the £27 and £2... the £2 is part of the £27 they paid! £27 plus the £3 they all got back as a refund makes £30, that is where all the money is. Simples! |

who cares about the £
3 people in the room sounds fun,
and who knows about the bellboy, could be even more fun.
maths :
3 people paid £9 each = £27
the hotel gets £25, the bellboy £2=£27
ps if i'd have had a £5 i'd have made someone a decent offer |
