I am ashamed to say that I do claim benifits I am full time employed however for personal reasons I am unable to work. as my sick pay ran out I had to claim benifits to live to my shock I am getting the same as a full month wage maybe slightly more no wonder people who are not bothered about working stay on benifits I feel ashamed and like a cheat for what I recieve. I am hoping to be back at work and earning my own money by December I will probably get a bit of stick for this post but just wanted to voice my opinion |

Are you unemployed at the moment?
Did you use to pay tax and PAYE? If so that means you put into the pot.
I think your entitled to claim back what you have given when you need to rely on the government. |

I have worked since I was 13 this has been my only long term sick I am still employed but my sick pay and statory sick pay ran out as you only get this for a certain about of weeks my employer is brilliant and as soon as I am fit and well enough I can return to work probably a phased return and maybe a department change but still a job to go back to |

You shouldn't feel bad about claiming what your entitled to, you normally work a full time job but due to unforeseen circumstances you have needed to claim. You clearly seem like you want to go back to work as well, whats the point of paying taxes when you work if they can be there to help you out when you can't?
Its the ones that play the system that should be ashamed not you. I hope you feel better soon. |

Why would you get stick OP? - I think that your outlook and attitude is very much the right one. Benefits are there for just this sort of reason, to help out when the worst happens.
Your _iew of wanting to get back to work as soon as your health / circumstances allow is, for me, the right outlook and definitely a positive one.
The problem is, as I see it, where people simply don't want to work to earn and actively avoid employment in favour of a state funded lifestyle. |

The welfare state was set up as a safety net to temporarily help those in need when they need it. Unfortunately some see that as a permanent life style choice. Sometimes a very profitable one. The system is not fit for purpose. What job do you know of that the more children you have your wages goes up? When I had mine my overall income went down - drastically (child care/going part time). Unfortunately I don't have the answers but would gladly vote for a party that does. |

people berate the abusers of the system on here & then people justify the abuse of this system by pointing the fingers at abusers of expenses ( the ones who truly take the piss, not the ones whose expenses are within the spirit of rules ).
all abuse for financial gain is wrong and should be punished, it is not a trade off. |

Don't feel ashamed. This is exactly what benefits are for - a temporary (hopefully) means of tiding you over until you can work again. You've paid in - the support is yours by right. |

Dont let a small % of professional lieing lazy bastards with an odd sense of entitlement, discolour your _iew of the welfare state. When i was out of work, i recieved sweet fa after 6 months and was well down the road to losing my house. The scandal of benefit cheats is being used as an excuse to take benefits of everyone that gets them. No matter how much we paid in or how much we proved we were looking for work. |

If you have paid in your tax and NI then you shouldn't feel bad about getting something back, that is what you pay in for. You just concentrate on getting well.
It is those who have never paid a penny into the system but still get payouts who are the scroungers, we should have a requirement of paying at least 3 years NI contributions before being entitled to nay benefits at all. |

dont feel bad - ive had to do the same in the past xxxxxxx but glad you have the work ethic you have - im on such a crap wage but prefer to be out earning - i have a friend who keeps having kids and i tell you they go short of nothing - shes just over 30 and has 5 now - just been given a lovely house to fit them all into etc - shes out at least once a week on a real big piss up - he dont work either - and so many of us cant afford a weekly shop at best - gggrrrrrr

OP, you've worked, paid in and are entitled to it.
What's most worrying to me anyway is that the Government doesn't pay out any more than it legally has to in benefits, yet if many people find they are a little or a lot better off on benefits why are employers allowed to pay such poor wages in the first place?
If they get their way and get rid of the EU Human Rights laws and decide HR laws in Westminster I'm cynical enough to think that other things such as minimum wage and working hours that are based on the current ECHR directives will no longer be covered in the UK.
We've already got ridiculous zero hours contracts under the EU to the great delight of employers and Govt.
Anybody here really trust Westminster to make sure the lower paid majority keep their minimum wage? |

Yes me too. I am quite wary of anecdotal evidence. My partner had 72 pounds a week for six months hardly a living wage. |

People claiming has never bothered me, take away every benefit going.... Does that mean we won't be taxed. Nope. It will be spent on worse things, like giving a Tory a 8th home. |

There's nothing to be ashamed of. Its the people who abuse the system that should be felt with. Fake single mums who have several kids by the same fella and still pushing them out knowing when they can stop claiming for each one. And fake disabled people who work as well. I know someone who claims dla for "eczema" on his legs but still works! |

That's what benefits are therefore to help you when u need it.
I shel had to go on benefits when I left my husband (8yrs ago) I had to move away and leave my job as he was violent. I had worked from leaving school and was terribly ashamed but had a 2 year old child at the time who needed support.
Anyway after a year I tried to get a job was a nightmare took 8 months of non stop trying and rejections to get a job.
So I see how hard it can be to get out of the rut.
However what I have a problem is people who are born into a benefit family, have loads of kids who the state is paying for, never work never pay in a penny, their parents didn't work and their children won't work.
Benefits are there for a reason it's the abuse of benefits that people hate |

No I wasnt on a low wage and I dont have kids I am single and live in a 1 bedroom flat because I stopped receiving any kind of sick pay I was advised to call dwp I dont know much about it as never been on long term sick or had to claim job seekers I phoned them answered all questions filled in a few forms and went for 1 assesment they said I am entitled to 3 different kind of benifits 1 which will carry on as its a disability benifit and I could of claimed ages ago but still after sending the forms etc I recieved letters to say how much and when I will recieve the money I just feel bad as im getting the same as what I would of working full time and like i said not minimum wage and I dont have travel costs so works out I am better off apart from my pride maybe this sounds snobish but I was brought up to work for my money |

yes you said. Why do you find it strange, I find it comforting that we live in a society that enables ill people to maintain a standard of living similar to the one they enjoyed when fit.
Our personal experience of living on benefits is very, very different and took us close to the edge of financial ruin. |

Exactly my point why is it different for different people and why should like my friend a 19 year old single girl no kids works full time on minimum wage lives on her own struggles with everything and not get any help some of it just doesnt make sense |

Without knowing her exact circumstances I would have thought she would be entitled to working tax credits and child tax credits. But this kind of illustrates the problem when discussing benefits and those who are entitled to them, no one really knows someone elses circumstances. |
