"Just had 2 cheques from the Halifax totalling £6k for the PPI scandal.
Only Lloyds, RBS, MBNA and Nat West to go now, hmm what can I spend it on "
It not right they took it in the first place though like with all the others due money back why didn't you read what you were signing up for in the first place? |

My ex got stitched up on this, that is she took out the loan and agreed to take this, even though I was self employed. Stupid me didn't check.
Fortunately got 12K back with interest added, don't tell the ex, I paid it all though.
Best stupid decision she ever made. |

most of the claims for 'mis-sold' PPI are fake, very few of the policies were mis-sold in the legal sense but as all the scam companies jumped on the bandwagon the banks just decided to settle as it would be cheaper than all the legal proceedings. The latest scam is mis-sold investments on the stock market (also known as gambling, maybe they will be going after the sports tipsters next)
If you signed a document saying you had read all the T&Cs then either you knew you were taking out PPi or you made a fraudulent application for the CC or loan
I guess I am actually one of the few people in the country who actually used PPI to pay off the CC balances when I was out of work. |

A word of warning to anyone looking for ppi compensation!!
A guy I know just got made redundant. He went to the bank to ask how they could help with his loan and mortgage payments while he was looking for work.
The reply? "If only we hadn't cancelled your ppi cover 6 mths ago when you put that claim in and got a cheque in the post!"
He's kicking himself now as the payments he'll have to make are far more than the cheque he received.

I can honestly say I don't get it at all.....if you buy something because it suits your needs at the time, why are they refunding?
I can understand if they sold you something that because of your circumstances they kne wouldn't pay out if you had to claim.....but because it could have been cheaper elsewhere? is that why they are paying out?

they refunded us because they insisted we took PPI and misled us about what it covered, they also didn't tell us that we had the same cover as standard with our bank account. They also actually said they wouldn't lend us money unless we took their product, told us that we only needed to pay it for part of the term of the loan and then they would refund the entire amount which would be enough to cover the outstanding loan amount...effectively shortening our loan period by several years.....it was all untrue. |

In your case - fully deserved compo.
It just seems others are claiming because of the press coverage, claims firms cold calling (who will take a cut when it's simple to claim yourself for free!) and just because the lure of cash is too tempting.
Many forget that it was totally sensible and suitable for them and not at all Mis-sold. I just worry that with a lot of redundancies going on many people run the risk of being bitten in the arse because they wanted a few quid for a holiday - the stats on what people spend their refunds on are shocking.
I don't see why any refund shouldn't be automatically paid off any existing lending rather than sent as a cheque, if the debt still remains.

So I am guessing "because it was cheaper elsewhere " isn't a reason for a refund going by what you say? |

No idea!
But if you sign up to a gas company on a fixed deal and then find one cheaper - there's no right to compo.
Or if you buy a car and see one cheaper down the road.....
I don't see cost as an argument.

Thats what I thought too, I can't see how they can pay out for that, if they are forced to I think that unfair.

yes we made the claim ourselves it was very straightforward but we did make ourselves look a bit sill by refusing the first cheque on teh grounds that they hadn't paid us interest on the money, then re reading the accompanying letter clearly stating "interest has been paid at a rate of x%" .
Interestingly I recently received a letter from a company I took a policy out with years ago then stopped, outlining why I had been mis sold,I didn't think I had but what they said was correct so I returned the forms saying that what they had stated was true and have received two small cheques from them this morning. I have no loans with them, they were policies to cover lost keys, lost credit cards and lost documents so I will be spending the money how I please the fact that this will be paying a couple of bills is galling but that's the way life goes |

Yep. But banks are easy targets.
You won't see the same happening in other sectors - utilities, car dealers, supermarkets, housing etc.
It's the 'compensation culture' the uk has inherited from the US.
Like accident claims companies. Surely, by definition, an 'accident' is just that - something that happens through no fault or blame. Yet I'm constantly being called and approached in the street asking if I've had one.
To which I say yes - but as it was an accident why would I seek to apply blame and claim compo at somebody else's cost?
It's claims like this that put the costs of services up - from banking to insurance.

Not really, you sued and won a bank. There are far more people luckier than you, try someone who has just been given the all clear from cancer. I think they are far more luckier and will aporeciate what they have been given is far more valable than a mere money, they have been given thier life back to enjoy again. |
