It can sometimes work out cheaper to fly to Abu Dhabi via Etihad, and its not that far from Dubai once you land - if it is a close friend, they will advise you better on getting between AD and Dubai.
Other than that expect to pay £400 upwards |

Emirates, however we have also used Etihad and landed in Abu Dhabi and travelled in. It is a great drive and has some great views of the city. The price is not much difference between the two so for convenience Emirates would be better, plus they use the A380 which is spectacular! |

Dubai like most places is seasonal so prices will depend on the time of year as well as the airline you choose.
Generally our summer months / Ramadan are the cheapest times ~ I would book with either Emirates, Virgin to Dubai or Etihad into Abu Dhabi which is just under an hours transfer to Dubai.
