I have a windows 8 laptop, recently an update was causing issues so I did a restore to the day before the update.

Now I am just getting the blue screen of death upon start up with error code 0xc000012a

Automatic repair isn't helping and is saying it can't fix the issue.

I have some important emails to send so hoping to fix it without taking it to a shop.

I'm a Mac girl these days so this may not be a viable suggestion but can you run it in safe mode from the boot up screen?

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Will it boot into Safe Mode?

Do you have a Windows install disk?

I think it's now going back to the last good configuration, will see if this works.

Windows 8 always seems to have an issue after updating itself. Is it worth turning automatic updates off?

Are you on Windows 8 or 8.1?

As the poster above suggests, try booting into safe mode. This can be a bit of a ball ache on Windows 8 though.

I think it's 8.1, only got it in Feb so I hope so. I hope it's not removing all my files etc I have them backed up on usb sticks but it's still a pain x

If it's not 8.1, I would upgrade.

If the last good configuration works, it might be best to do some generic troubleshooting steps.

Download the free version of Malwarebytes and do a scan, get CCleaner and do a registry clean up, get a decent free anti-virus on there (like Avast) etc.

Should probably add a disclaimer: If any of this results in your laptop exploding and your house burning down, I'm not to blame. It's probably Sydney Universities fault.
