I need to decide on a new (to me) car.
My car is 15 years old and though mechanically very sound, the bodywork is uh showing its age.
But I love my car!!! I've had it for 12 years now. It's pretty and a lovely colour and slightly unusual and I love it.
I haven't even started trying to decide what I want yet. I might carry on using mine until it seriously fails an MOT. The engine probably has another 50-100k miles in it yet. It's only done 93k (and the engine is known for being bomb-proof).
I'm already in mourning for my car. I'm sure no other car (within my reach, since I can't have a Veyron or something) could possibly be as wonderful as my car.
Does anyone understand this or am I just barking mad? |

I never get rid of a car until it dies so um probably not best qualified to answer.....why change if there's nothing wrong with it? Always better the devil you know with cars |

How can I love a car that is now visibly rusting (partly thanks to my sodding ex-bf for that) when I could have a shiny, much newer one? That's their view. |

I totally understand as I love my car. I'm always sad to see a car go.
You need to find a great replacement & then you'll have a new car to love! 
We have a new Porsche garage just being opened fairly near to me. I'm looking forward to when their stock arrives, so I can have a gander. Not that I could ever afford what I'd want ! . |

It has a couple of (very) minor issues (that I'm perfectly happy to live with) but the bodywork is starting to look very sad.
My parents are worried about it letting me down and have offered to help me get something newer.
I agree that if it's reliable (and it always has been before) I should think hard before changing for an unknown quantity.
It is visibly rusty now though and I know that the underlying bodywork situation is more horrifying still. |

I know exactly how you feel? I've had my car from new its now 10 yrsold. I know ive got to spend on it this year, but will be the first time. Ive decided I need a more grandchildren friendly car lol. Yet im still waiting until next summer. I know I will be very upset when it does go. |

Just bought another motor n will be selling mine via the bay the next couple of weeks
It's not 'slightly unusual' as per the OP post but very unusual
It will either sell quickly to a cool person or I'll be stuck coz the straights only like grey

I was I selling my car on eBay but ended it couldn't bring myself to let it go,was only selling it for a deposit for a mortgage anyway haha stay with the jap motor there awsum mines a skyline r34 only way I'm getting rid is if it dies completely lol |

It's a '99 Honda Civic 1.6 vti
I can see why you don't want to get rid of it. I had '91 Civic 1.5 LSi that I kept for 9 years in Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Holland and Germany. Beautiful handling and totally reliable. 90K+ miles is nothing these days on a well-maintained engine. "
The 1.6 vti is also 160bhp and pretty much tuned to the fullest extent (for the 1.6 n/a engine) as it comes from the factory. Beyond slapping on a supercharger, there's not much you can do to them to improve performance, (so no mods to need to declare!).
It's a bit rubbish below about 4500 revs but it revs to 8000 and over 4500 it is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
It's not a turbo-charged monster, or a huge V8 or W16 but for what it is, it's lovely. |

It's going to need a lot of metal cut out, templates made, new sections made up and skilled welding. It's rotting from the inside (rear wheel arches and the back section of the sills are worst) and in places where it should have 3 layers of bodyshell, it's down to lacework and the outer skin 
At the moment it's nowhere structurally worrying but the repairs needed are substantial.
I don't know anyone capable and a bodyshop would charge in terms of first born. |

I had an R33 GTR many years ago, I'd love an R34 as a trackday/weekend car. I'd go for a single turbo conversion though. |

I'm a more modest 370bhp more sideways action looking for 500 eventually |

Naa, I'd convert the RB27 engine to single turbo like a lot of the Japanese tuners used to and aim for 800+bhp. |

I didn't piss about with mine. Too many of my mates ended up with chocolate gearboxes and chocolate engines that way.
I had the 250 bhp and 250 lb/ft that the PPP gave me, which it came with from the factory. All I did to it was the bumpsteer mod.
I didn't drag race it at all nor take it on track much so it was still more than I needed on a road.
Plus if I wanted a stupid fast one I had people I could borrow one from. |

I think that if it has low resale value then its value to you is going to be so much higher. It would seem a crime to let it go and change it. Id stick with it until major bills or mot fail and major bills. Im no car expert though |
