After a reading a thread earlier it reminded me that it's been a long time since I last gave blood.
I've been very ill love the last couple of years so I thought I'd better check if I still can - apparently my blood is no longer welcome!
Have to admit I'm a bit gutted cos I was hoping to be able to put back in after taking out for so long.
Do you give blood?
If not why not? A good medical reason or are you a wuss or a needle-phobe? |

I did, until they started taking the piss with appointments and then cut the service so the wait time was huge. Then they rejected my blood, even though they shouldn't have, because I'd started some new meds a few months before. They didn't have a doctor there so a nurse made the decision and decided (wrongly according to the guidelines) I hadn't been on them long enough to ensure I was ok on them. Having wasted 3 hours of my time, they sent me home.
I probably shouldn't give anyway because I've had sex with a man who has had sex with another man, (several years ago, with protection and I've tested as completely clean many times since).
I'm group O neg so I keep hearing how important my blood is to them. Not that important though, apparently. |

Been donating for 25+ years now. Am A+ and on a new trial for higher frequency donations (for men only)they are beginning to get short on some types and want to find out if its possible to donate more than every 16 weeks, it leaves me feeling a bit woozy afterwards, and I always look the other way when they put the needle in. If anyone can give blood then please do it you never know when or if you will need some yourself.
You never mentioned why your blood refused, is it a short term block or a total ban? |

I tried many years ago but it was an awful experience for me. I blacked out and could not speak properly when I came round. I have never dared try again. Anyone who can should. |

Nope.
I can't stand needles and apparently I'm a slow bleeder.
It's enough of a struggle trying to get half a vial from me for blood tests (one Nurse tried for 15mins once), let alone a bag. - You'd be there for bloody hours!

Total ban forever - I have been thanked for my service but given the boot!
But I am due to have major surgery soon with every chance I may need extra blood whilst I'm under. And since I can no longer donate I feel we should have a Fab blood drive on behalf of those of us who have been repaired and would love to give back.
So come on people, give blood this month - you get tea and a biccie and that virtuous feeling of having been a truly generous person! |

I did do, up until they decided my blood may contain the XMRV virus, due to having M.E. That was November 2012. I was really gutted and now feel guilty when I hear the radio ads saying they are low on Oneg |

Having just picked my jaw off the floor I've decided to go and give blood ASAP. Never realised how much red tape is in the way... or how unfortunate so many are... I thought everyone just turned up and gave it... Fab, great for meeting sexy friends and now fully educational with new Wikipedia forums lol... Bless you all x |

I'm A+ and have donated for years apart from a 18 month break due to having my tattoos done.
My father had to have several blood transfusions which allowed him to live longer than he would have otherwise. So I greatly appreciate all those people that donate blood. |

Is that true? Genuine question. If you're bi or gay, you cant give blood?"
Gay or bi men were banned from giving blood for life prior to 2011.
Now they may donate if they have not had sex with another man (including oral sex, I believe, but am not certain) for 12 months. |

It's 4 months, not 12. If you've had a piercing, a tattoo or acupuncture (outside of the NHS) within 4 months you can't donate. If you've done any of those things within 12 months you need to tell them but, as long as it's been at least 4 months, it won't prevent you from donating. |

I giver regularly. Its very important to me, have seen it save loads of friends and their kiddies.
I've also donated eggs for fertility treatments (BTW sperm donation doesn't get £35 - they *might* cover your costs, but under HfEA laws, you cannot financially gain for donating)
Its 12 months after contact with a gay or bi man, never if you sue injecting drugs, or have been paid for sex, and 4 months for piercings and tattoos.
I'm due to give again in August. Best tasting tunnocks teacake ever! lol |

I really don't get the rule that you can't give if you've ever been paid for sex.
Someone can be prolific and engage in unsafe sex without charging and still donate but charge even once, no matter how few partners you have, how long ago you last had sex, or how safe you are, you can never donate again. |

I know, I don't get the full detail of it, but the lady at my donor clinic said its because many sex trade works are more at risk of STD and blood borne pathogens and classed as higher risk than "normal society" and also the prevalence of drug use in the sex trade is taken into account.
My clinic have actually asked about sexual history when they do the screening. |

I'm sure the official line is something like that. In my _iew, however, equating having _ever_ charged for sex with being in the sex trade and being a higher risk wrt STIs seems a bit of a leap.
Some people charge for sex occasionally because it's a kink but aren't really "sex workers".
Some people charge for sex without ever having penetrative or oral sex with clients.
Something about the assumption that all sex workers are disease riddled drug addicts bothers me. Some are, sure, but a lot aren't.
Besides, most diseases can be screened for, so surely, as for men who've had sex with men, if you've not been in the sex trade for a certain period of time you should be regarded as the same as anyone else? |

I donate as often as I can, but getting an appointment can be bloody hard work and I daren't turn up without one after the last time I did as the fella made me feel like I'd just taken a big shit in his corn flakes, first cos I didn't have an appointment and then because I dared to ask roughly how long I'd be waiting without an appt. I wasn't trying to jump the queue despite what he seemed to think, I just needed to know if I'd paid enough for parking! |

Now I've moved jobs I should get it sorted as I work near one of the centres. And being O -ve makes me very popular with them. |

Stuff I have learned (usually the hard way) when giving blood:
Make sure you're not dehydrated. Vein walls get tougher when you are and the needle just bounces off.
Stay lying down for longer than the recommended two mins if you faint easily. The nurses would rather you took up a bed than took up floor space.
Take advantage of the free tea and biccies. You need replenishing.
If you're left handed tell them - the beds are reversible. |
