Bloody cyclists...
Jump to: Newest in thread
I know not all cyclists are the same, so I am not attacking all cyclists....
Whitehall it shut for the TDF, myself and a few fellow pedestrians are walking in the road due to the pavements being so busy...
We are in the bus lane. The main lanes are empty yet a cyclist nearly rides into the back of me, missing my by a few inches... He's on the wrong side of the road and not a young lad either....
Why do some people have to spoil it for others....If he'd done the other way he would have probably ended up on his arse....
If you want to ride like an arse go to the woods... |

"Nobody is interested in the TD bloody F apart from the 2,500,000 spectators watching it"
Just cause it is not football, no need to be like that.
Sadly there are fucking idiots like this everywhere, I know I go a little close to pedestrians who have thier back to me in the cycle lane. But only to say boo as I go past, it shits the life out of them. Hope you are ok. |

I think he was being sarcastic....
I'm fine thanks. It just seems silly to ride that close and fast to pedestrians... It would only have taken a wobble on his part or a slight change of direction by me and we would bothbeen hurt.... |

Cos it was tour de France day lol to be dasir I probably would expect cyclist spectators to be there so would watch out for them, check behind me when changing directions etc. |

The point was... Why cycle within inches of pedestrians on the wrong side of the road when there two wide lanes that were totally empty...
I think it is terrible when any one is killed cyclists or otherwise. However when you see the way some people cycle it is not surprising that tragedies do happen... I'm not excusing bad driving which also causes tragedy... |

I have nothing against cyclists, but only today I nearly hit one, who was on the wrong side of the road and coming out of a side street whilst I was turning into it. He then had the gawd to shout at me when I gave way to him!!

Other than on a pedestrian crossing facility, the only place pedestrians have 'priority' is when they are crossing a road into which another vehicle is turning and they had started to cross when that vehicle turned in.
In the USA, for example, you cross the road or otherwise bimble about in the carriageway and you get a ticket for jaywalking. |

I've seen this a few times myself, I'm a cyclist an have witnessed other cyclist yours missing pedestrians when they've been on the road, feck knows why yet do it, just to make a point they're there? I don't know, but I give pedestrians and indeed anything else on the road a wide berth, I'm one of the rare cyclists who actually follow the Highway Code. |

"You are walking in the road and a cyclist nearly hits you? "
Cyclists aren't blind, the should give any obstacle on the road more room, the road was completely empty yet they chose to just brush past instead of giving them a few feet gap, who ever it was cycling probably drives an Audi too. |

"Should av a referendum on bicycles......not enough space on public roads...especially In Cities....."
Correct there.... cities are choked with cars, hence the need to improve cycle provision and routes, biggest issue of course is the lack of investment since the time of the so called Iron Lady meaning a radical approach is needed.....
Yep I'm a cyclist too...yep middle aged and yep in Lycra too... I also can see after the weekend in Yorkshire how interest in cycling is increasing for Leisure and commuting too....I guess everyone needs to follow Mrs Thatchers colleagues advice and Get On Your Bike... |

In Brighton they have a cycle path along the sea front, it is painted a different colour to the rest of the pavement. Yet still people walk in it when the pavement is clear, it does annoy me a little when they do that but I try and give them room when passing as people don't look for cyclists.
So not always the best idea having mixed pavement/cycle path. |

There needs to be a massive investment in safe infrastructure, possible long term benefits to the nations health and subsequent reduction in costs to the NHS etc..
removal of some road vehicles as once confidence is there then some will leave their cars at home..
but probably more importantly given that the increase in fatalities and serious life changing injuries for cyclists will only increase..

A caller on 5 live earlier suggested making each road have a designated cycle path.
There is usually x2 pavements, make one for cycles only and not pedestrains, too much money I think and would only halve the problems of bikes on footpaths |

I think you missed the bit about the road being shut, that applies to buses and cycles and a closed road is only accessible by emergency vehicles. |

Actually I did miss that but it doesn't alter the fact that the OP shouldn't have been where she was either. And everywhere I was in London yesterday the closed roads had police and/or stewards direcrting people off the roads and on to the pavement. Not least bbecause there were race vehicles away from the actual route
You can't complain at someone ignoring the rules when you are doing tge same yourself |

the old cycle proficiency test was superseded by the Bikeability program, Govt approved scheme & delivered by local authority approved instructors. Its still out there and delivered for adults and children. I believe its down to local authorities how and when/where they decide to deliver it.
Having been involved in delivering it (volunteer helper) its very different than the old CP test. |

Whitehall wasn't on the route but was one of many roads closed to accommodate the infrastructure. All roads around there had police and stewards keeping people on the pavement. Which is probably why the pavements were crowded. The cyclist was in the wrong. The OP was in the wrong. I'm not sure how that is biased? |

Level 1 and 2 Bikeability in my area is delivered to all primary schools that request it by DT trained instructors, they work to strict guidelines to deliver the training to year 5 and 6 kids. The kids have to reach all the outcomes of the training but there is no test just a set of outcomes that they must achieve.
Level 3 Bikeability is delivered to adults with the aim of getting them cycling to work safely, in Lincoln there is a scheme running teaching this |

Well not one police officer or steward to me (him) or any of the hundred or so people to get out of the road. The point of shutting the roads is to accommodate the thousands of extra pedestrians on days like this...

It aint just cities. They are a nuisance in the country as well. Some roads down here are very narrow and having a cyclist means you are unable to pass safely. What makes it worse is when they ride next to each other and completely block the road. |

They do that to make sure they are seen on the roads, same with horses although I was always taught to move into single file once you know the car has spotted you and to make it clear to cars behind you when it is safe to pass. |

I think when they have a dozen cars beeping their horns behind them they realise! Whether that makes an ounce of difference is another question |

Whether that makes an ounce of difference is another question"
If (and it's a big if) i was in a bike and a car driver was beeping his horn behind me I'd think they were a twat and would make no allowances for them. Why is their journey more important than anyone else's just because they have an engine and a tin box round them?
If a driver was polite and waited for the right time to pass I may, if safe to do so move over to allow them to pass me and wave a thank you at them as they went by.
It's about respecting people really, not viewing people as an inconvenience just because they choose a different mode of transport to you. |

Its not about who has the right to the road, its about being considerate and aware of who else is on the road. Cyclists who ride side by side chatting, dont seem to be either! |

And how exactly is bemonaning a handful of seconds delay and expecting cyclists to give motorists an automatic right of way to cars demonstrating consideration and awareness of other road users?

I have been out in groups riding 2 a breast, when car comes up behind we went single file, but it takes a while to realise you have a car behind you. As the wind noise makes it hard to hear what is happening behind us.
Do car drivers still give cyclists a little toot on.the horn to let the cyclists know the car is behind them, drivers used to do it years ago when I was out with the St. Helens CRC club. |

In your first post there were 'a few other pedestrians' now there are hundreds?
And I've never condoned idiot cyclists on this thread or any other "
Some people make this hard work... The group I was in was in wasn't that big but over the length of Whitehall there were hundreds. I was just trying to give a rough idea of what it was like. I didn't realise I had to give a detailed description and a supply a scale diagram...
It does appear that every time someone criticises a cyclist you point out what the other person could/should have done to avoid the cyclist or the situation. This is the problem we have in London. A hell of a lot of cyclists seem to think that everyone else should avoid them even when they are jumping red light, cutting across lanes without looking etc... |
